Betty?

Has it been long enough that Betty is cool again along with all the other old lady chic names?

It was my Grandmothers name (She was just Betty, not short for Elizabeth or anything) and if given the opportunity of naming a DD I think I would consider it as a name, even though it still sounds really old fashioned to my ears because I've only ever known my GM with that name.
I can picture it on a little girl and and old lady but not a teen/young woman.

Has anyone heard of any baby Bettys lately or is it totally hideous and my fondness for my lovely grandma is tricking me into thinking it's actually a nice name?

I know a baby Betty and a baby Betsy! I like it, fits with the trend of old fashioned names.

Weirdly I don't like Betsy or Bitsy even though they are so similar!
I've heard of a few babies named those the last few years.
But as I said it may be my memory of such a lovely grandmother skewing my opinion on names!

I love, love, love the bane Betty. You should definitely go for it Smile

TenShortStories · 25/02/2021 21:09

I know an 8 year old Elizabeth who goes by Betty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/02/2021 21:16

It is lovely - as a nickname for Elizabeth (or variants like Bethan/Bethany). I think Betty as a given name sounds quite retro trendy (or very 90/100 years ago, take your pick).Imo if you use Betty as a first name on the BC, you risk it dating.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/02/2021 21:16

Betty would make a very cool middle though, just as it is!

StressedTired · 25/02/2021 21:20

I love the name Betty! I know a 12 year old Betty which is short for Bethany, but I think it's fine as a stand alone name too. Also my grandma's name Smile

I think Jonathan Ross has a daughter named Betty.
I personally don’t like it though I had a dear aunt called that (not a nn).
Can’t think of anyone inspirational called that

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 25/02/2021 21:43

If you want it then you should call her Elizabeth so she has alternatives when she is older.
I don't like it, it is too old lady but it is better than mabel/ ivy/ audrey... whatever old woman name is fashionable this week.

DinosaurDiana · 25/02/2021 21:45

Love it !

DramaAlpaca · 25/02/2021 21:45

I'm really sorry, but I hate it. It's hideous. It's nicer than the cutesy Betsy, though.

partyatthepalace · 25/02/2021 23:38

Quite like it yes, but would call her Elizabeth or Eliza for some options.

JustLurkingAway · 25/02/2021 23:41

Reminds of the new (ish) song by Taylor swift called Betty!

Lalliella · 26/02/2021 00:14

Gavin Williamson would like it!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 26/02/2021 04:09

Love it! Very cool!

pipsqueakbollock · 26/02/2021 04:17

I know a teen Betty. Just Betty, not shortened.

She's super cool and savvy. Friends call her Bets.

wellthatsunusual · 26/02/2021 04:30

I love it. Mind you, I loved old lady names before they were fashionable. And my own name is incredibly old lady-ish and out of keeping with my actual age so I do know from experience what it's like to be the child with the granny name.

KeeefBurtain · 26/02/2021 05:05

I have an Elspeth and my mum calls her Betty as a nickname. I think it’s cute

Thack · 26/02/2021 05:42

It's OK, go for it if you want!

I would agree with pp, using Elizabeth gives more options as she grows up. Going straight to Betty makes it clearer though.

Blacktothepink · 26/02/2021 05:53

I love it...

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 26/02/2021 05:54

What about Bette, as in the fabulous Bette Davis? Unlike Bette Midler, who I have read claims she was named after Bette Davis, Davis pronounced it as Betty, from a Balzac novel.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 26/02/2021 05:57

Betty yes it's kind of cool

SexyGiraffe · 26/02/2021 06:18

I know a 7yo Betty. It suits her and she's pretty cool.

ProperVexed · 26/02/2021 06:32

Oooh Betty!

Onedropbeat · 26/02/2021 07:30

Love it
