Lovely! I know one who is 5ish. It's great.

Monty?

InABlueMoon · 15/02/2021 14:46

Sorry... I can't imagine an adult Barnaby/Barney

Here are some suggestions which I think are a similar(ish) vibe:
Theodore nn Theo
Gabriel nn Gabe
Tobias nn Toby
Benjamin nn Ben/Benji
Willoughby nn Will
Montgomery nn Monty
Frederick nn Freddie

adrianmolesmole · 15/02/2021 14:47

I just can't see it as a serious name. It's like a cartoon character's name. Or a dog's. Or an adult like Boris.

Timpeall · 15/02/2021 14:49

It's not a name I love but I can't see what makes Monty and Benji more suitable for an adult than Barney. They seems far more cartoonish to me.

Synchrony · 15/02/2021 14:52

I really like Barnaby. I know one in his 40s. Nice chap.

SquigglePigs · 15/02/2021 14:55

I really like it. It suits little ones and I have a colleague in his 40's at work and it works just as well on an adult (he's known as Barney to his closer colleagues and Barnaby to the wider business who he doesn't work with so often).

DreamingInColours · 15/02/2021 14:58

I love it but wouldn't use it as it reminds me of the Simpsons character and Barney Rubble

halcyondays · 15/02/2021 15:04

It’s a great name.

31RooCambon · 15/02/2021 15:06

I like Barny but not Barnaby

grannycake · 15/02/2021 15:22

I really wanted to call DS2 Barney but DH vetoed. DS2 says he will be forever grateful that I was stopped

Minty82 · 15/02/2021 15:27

I quite like it! I know a couple of adult Barneys and have never met a child called it, so it doesn’t have particularly childish associations to me.

Sausagedog1 · 15/02/2021 15:34

I wanted to call DS2 Barney but was vetoed. I have a feeling he might be grateful when he is older.

Bloomsdale · 15/02/2021 15:40

i like Barnaby! not Barney though

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/02/2021 16:03

@Bloomsdale

i like Barnaby! not Barney though
Agreed, Barnaby is nice enough/quite cute but I find Barney is more comical - like Barney in the Flintstones or the Simpsons, I struggle to take it seriously.

Arthur (Artie)
Tobias (Toby)
Charles (Charlie)
Robert (Bertie)
Alfred (Alfie/Freddie)
Wilfred (Wilf/Wolfie)
Phillip (Pip/Flip)
James (Jamie)
John (Johnny)
Jonathan (Jonty)
Samuel (Sammy)
Daniel (Danny)
Hugh (Hughie/Huggy)

Barnaby

finallychangedmyusername · 15/02/2021 19:33

Thumbs up from me to Barnaby, nicknamed Barney.

Other options:
Christopher / Kit
Adrian
Nathaniel
Harrison

DuckonaBike · 15/02/2021 19:33

It’s a nice name, but are you aware it’s slang for an argument?

“Just heard the neighbours having a massive barney”, or similar (it’s usually a massive barney. Or occasionally a bit of a barney). That would put me off.

2tired2bewitty · 15/02/2021 19:37

Love it, but it sounds a bit silly with our surname so I have a Tobias instead.

Sprig1 · 15/02/2021 19:42

It's a dogs name.

user1493494961 · 15/02/2021 19:43

I really like it, a friend of ours is a Barnaby (Barney) he's a surgeon, I imagine his patients take him seriously.

partyatthepalace · 15/02/2021 19:45

Nothing wrong with Barnaby nn Barney, though personally I prefer Barnabas...

Stanley, Sidney, Diggory, Tobias, Nathaniel, Christopher/Kester nn Kit or Christy, Augustus nn Gus, Benedict, Alexander nn Sandy, Silas, Rufus, Miles

Whatsyourflava · 15/02/2021 19:56

Love it. I know two adult Barnaby and no children so is a completely acceptable adult name to me. You know names like Albie Sonny and Teddy are all popular regular names now but I bet 20 years ago people would think you couldn't use these names

Nathaniel
Laurence
Tristan
Jasper
Blake
Wilfred
Vincent

supersonicginandtonic · 15/02/2021 19:59

All I can think of is a big, purple dinosaur, that sings "I love you!" Sorry.

OhMsBeliever · 15/02/2021 20:01

I have a Barnaby (almost always called Barney) He's a teenager now. He likes his name. It's a lovely name.

Only 2 people have ever mentioned the purple dinosaur, one of them gave him a soft toy Barney. He thinks it's cool! Grin

Imissthegym · 15/02/2021 20:03

My bosses boss is called Barnaby, doesn’t appear to have held him back careerwise. Lovely name.
