It’s a perfectly acceptable name, but it’s too soft sounding for me. Cute for a small boy, but I don’t think I’d want a name like that as a grown man, I’d want something a bit more rugged! Barnaby doesn’t sound very charismatic. However, it is a million times better than Alfie, Albie, Ronnie Reggie etc. I like the fact it ends in an ‘ee’ sound without it being an abbreviation for something. And I don’t think there are any issues with an adult Barnaby being taken seriously. I’d imagine Barnaby to be from a fairly privileged background, with a good education under his belt.

I really like it.
Barnabas is also nice.

Thank you all for your replies - given me lots to think about! However I think I've vetoed Barney myself now 😂

Ah that's a shame - was just coming to say I love it and it's on my list!

I prefer Barnabas

Love it, not keen on Barny nn.

I taught a five year old Barnaby, it’s a very cute and masculine name!
I also know a guy who is in his 20s called Barnaby/Barney. He is a cool dude. Relaxed, funny, popular, successful. His name works well on him.

What a shame you have vetoed it! Barnaby is a lovely and underused name.
The adult I know with the name is very rugged and macho.

Similar? Hmmmm: Teddy, Toby...

Love Barnaby. I've only ever known one. He is 15 now and goes by Barnaby or Barnes rather than Barney but it still suits him as much as it did when he was a toddler
