Lily and Tulip as sibilings??

We already have a daughter, Lily and we are expecting another baby girl! we love floral names and have been thinking of Tulip, but we aren't sure if it's too weird since not many kids are named Tulip (we are also afraid she'll get picked on). What do you think? We were also thinking of names like Lavender, Hazel, Holly and Daisy.

Are you planning on having more than 2 DC? A flower/nature theme might be just a little bit Hyacinth Bucket.

SaltyTootsieToes · 09/02/2021 10:07

At work many years ago, we had a woman in a fairly high position with a very silly name. Before people met her, I know there were little snide comments made abd chuckling. I felt very sorry for her

I used that as a guide naming my DDs. I wanted names that would not embarrass them or cause any type of preconceived ideas about them based in their names.

So with that said, do you see a ceo of a major corp named tulip? Be serious and think about it. Holly, sure thing, rosemary or rise, sure thing. Daisy?? Far too cutesy.

I think there’s more options that aren’t too out there or cutesy if you want floral. In fact, why not Flora, Fern?

drkpl · 09/02/2021 10:20

Will they grow up in a gingerbread house together?

Sorry- joke. But I honestly couldn’t imagine doing that to my children.

Meggymoo777 · 09/02/2021 10:23

@Apileofballyhoo

Isn't tulip slang for idiot?
This - where I live it is an insult meaning idiot
SaltyTootsieToes · 09/02/2021 10:28

Oops. Rose not rise. That would be silly

RuthW · 09/02/2021 12:16

I know a Poppy and Daisy set.

I'd be more concerned that one is very popular and one nearly unheard off.

douliket · 09/02/2021 12:34

You do realise that if someone is calling you a tulip, it not meant in a kind way, it is used to describe someone as stupid ,pathetic, ridiculous,it's definitely a name I wouldn't consider giving a child, how awful for that child growing up, Holly is a beautiful name and there are plenty more such as poppy, jasmine,Scarlett ,please please don't call your child a tulip.

Upthread I mentioned I’d met a Tulip professionally. She was very senior and quite a formidable lady.

Heather
Willow

Ooh Tulip isn't good, I think. I really don't like the 'Lip' ending. And short form - Too? Tue?

It doesn't actually make a nice name. I'd go for something else.

partyatthepalace · 09/02/2021 16:35

I wouldn’t because it’s slang for being thick (presume something to do with the Dutch tulip craze)

I think you’d be better off with a flower not ending in y so it’s not too matchy -
Jasmine - lovely and not so common
Iris
Rose - popular but lovely
Violet - newly popular but still lovely
Flora
Fleur
Heather
Genista - met one, think it’s a Scottish flower
Rowan
Laurel
Fern
I met a Sorrel once
Briar? Probably sounds a bit like bra

Hazel I think is ugly and Lavinder makes me think of Toilets, mind you they are both better than Primrose and Marigold which people appear to be using.

SE13Mummy · 09/02/2021 22:26

When I hear Tulip as a name, I think of this character from Strawberry Shortcake.

I think Lily and Tulip don't work as well together as some other nature name pairings e.g. Poppy and Daisy, Rosie and Daisy, Heather and Rosa, Jasmine and Saffron, Poppy and Sorrel. I know of quite a few sisters where one has a flower name and the other has a colour e.g. Scarlett and Daisy, Ruby and Lily.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 09/02/2021 22:52

I like Tulip.

I recently met a little girl called Marigold.

babynamelover · 09/02/2021 23:10

Tulip is too much it's like using Orchid, Lotus or Daffodil i can't see it on a child it's in the flower camp for me.

I know sisters Lily & Fleur that's lovely.

I also think Lily & Iris are nice.

I think steering away from the y/ie ending is a good idea unless you want to go all Jamie Oliver!

Lily &

Azalea
Magnolia (Nola)
Heather
Aster

Georgia
Caitlin
Cara
Zara
Niamh
Margot
Pippa
Tessa
Anna

Dyra · 09/02/2021 23:13

I quite like Tulip. Other than Tulip Muzumdar, the only other Tulip I know of is from a Harry Potter game.

Personally, I wouldn't be brave enough to use it, and would probably go with Daisy.

littlemisslozza · 09/02/2021 23:17

I'm not a fan of Tulip. I find it twee.

Fern
Willow
Holly
Rowan
Heather
Iris
Rosie
Jasmine

FlamingGreatGalaahs · 09/02/2021 23:30

Love hazel.

FlamingGreatGalaahs · 09/02/2021 23:30

Flora is also lovely.

FlamingGreatGalaahs · 09/02/2021 23:31

Ooo and Violet!

SionnachRua · 09/02/2021 23:32

Tulip is a godawful name. If you must do a floral theme, there are so many better options out there.

Notashandyta · 09/02/2021 23:35

I like lily and violet

MrWendel · 09/02/2021 23:40

Tulip is a weird name. Rose is far prettier, or Iris.

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 09/02/2021 23:44

Tulip is awful for all the reasons mentioned above.

Lavender is also awful. Lav? It is likely to be shortened.

Iris or Hazel are nice and stop the names together sounding too twee.

campion · 09/02/2021 23:54

There's also Tulip Siddiq MP. Her name hasn't held her back.

It's no more 'weird' than any of the other flowery names suggested, and better than some.
It's more odd to me to give the next one a flower name just because the first one has one. But whatever floats your boat...

VenusClapTrap · 10/02/2021 08:40

I met a Sunflower once.
