Lily and Tulip as sibilings??

We already have a daughter, Lily and we are expecting another baby girl! we love floral names and have been thinking of Tulip, but we aren't sure if it's too weird since not many kids are named Tulip (we are also afraid she'll get picked on). What do you think? We were also thinking of names like Lavender, Hazel, Holly and Daisy.

I think Tulip would be forever wishing she was called Lily.... Rose would be my choice.

RosesforMama · 08/02/2021 19:56

There is a blow job joke, I think it might be "what is better than roses on a piano", to which the punch line is "tulips on an organ". For that reason alone, I would absolutely veto the name.

There are lots of lovely flower names. Saffron? Juniper?

anicecupoftea19 · 08/02/2021 20:03

I think that there are far nicer flowery names. I don't like the actual word Tulip really, like it doesn't sound a nice word if that's makes sense? Lily is lovely. Tulip, no, sorry just don't like it.

Tulip makes me think of the ya novel The Tulip Touch - it's about a tween/growing into teen girl who it turns out is a compulsive liar, fairly massive psychopath, animal killer and arsonist. So I'd struggle to get past that.

Iris or Rose would be lovely though.

Watching Preacher right now! Tulips name is pronounced 'Too-lip' in a southern drawl... on anyone else it would be ridiculous, but after 4 series the actress totally is Tulip O'Hare

Lily and Tulip as sibilings??

Beautiful Rose is the classic name to match the lovely Lily - I suspect there are quite a few historical Rose and Lily sibsets! Iris would also be nice and fit well.

Tulip is a bit "out there" compared to Lily. Lavender is also a bit unusual imo. Daisy is too cutesy for me, but Hazel and Holly seem useable enough.

Other less obvious "flower" options could be the elegant Viola or the pretty Flora?

Random789 · 08/02/2021 20:56

Tulip added to an already floral family is too much. If you really want a flower name to go with Lily, it might be good to choose a more familiar and conventional one like Rose or Daisy. That way you are a bit less likely to get mistaken for Kew Gardens.

VenusClapTrap · 08/02/2021 21:49

I don’t mind Tulip. I met one professionally years ago and it suited her.

How about Nerine? Very pretty flower.

StanfordPines · 08/02/2021 21:58

I think Tulip is to obviously a flower. You think if it as a flower before the name.
Iris, Rose, Ivy, Heather, Holly are all ones that are established as names so sit better.

Okbutnotgreat · 08/02/2021 22:04

Jasmine and Poppy are both pretty flower names.

yetmorenamechanging · 08/02/2021 22:16

Delphine is gorgeous - with the L pronounced, not swallowed!

Tulip is really not good.

Instead of Violet, I'd propose Violeta.

Tulip sounds like you were really trying to think of a flower name that is different. The other flower names don't sound so try-hard. They're recognisable as flowers, but not too A FLOWER NAME type of names.

I met a Yarrow once. I thuu out why that was a bit weird - isn't Yarrow a type of weed?!

Conundrumofsorts · 08/02/2021 22:18

I know a tulip, mid thirties and sister is called Daisy.

ODFOx · 08/02/2021 22:26

I quite like Tulip but it is a bit marmite. You said that you like floral names. Have you considered Flora?

borntohula · 08/02/2021 22:27

Ugh, not Tulip but Hazel is lovely. Not ridiculous but certainly not overused!

MindyStClaire · 08/02/2021 23:07

Sibling flower names makes me think of Keeping Up Appearances - Hyacinth, Rose, Lily, Violet. Blush

Choconuttolata · 08/02/2021 23:08

Cassia
Dahlia
Flora
Willow are also in the same theme

I like Iris or Violet.

MissSmiley · 08/02/2021 23:15

I think Lilac is gorgeous but not sure about both sisters having the same initial
Jasmine is nice

octoberfarm · 08/02/2021 23:17

Seconding Marigold or perhaps Juniper? Congrats, OP!

Sheleg · 08/02/2021 23:19

Tulip has a really ugly sound. I think it's the "-ip" part. Just vile.

mamaoffourdc · 08/02/2021 23:20

I have nieces called lily and iris x

Conundrumofsorts · 08/02/2021 23:20

‘Vile’ wow

WineInTheWillows · 08/02/2021 23:23

Nope. Maybe if you'd gone weird and wonderful for both, but Lilly is really common and I don't think the juxtaposition works. If I heard of a Lilly/Tulip sibset, my first thought would be that Tulip had gotten a raw deal. Similar to Harry Potter's kids, James and Albus Severus. I mean, is it any wonder poor Albie went off the rails a bit?

Pipandmum · 08/02/2021 23:23

Um I can see this setting them up for loads of teasing...not the name Tulip (which does sound a bit try hard), but two floral names.

viktoria · 08/02/2021 23:33

I find a lot of other flower names a bit too cutesy... Lily included.
I love the name Tulip.
How about Hebe?

BigPaperBag · 09/02/2021 08:29

Tulip 😂😂 Poor kid, don’t put her through it! What about Ivy. Holly is probably my favourite from your list, don’t like any of the others.
