Thoughts on Laurie

Planning on TTC later in the year and already love thinking about possible names.

I find boys names quite difficult as there are not many I like. That said, what is everyone's thoughts on Laurie, for a boy?

If you like it, is it ok as a stand alone name or would it need to be Laurence on the BC?

For context other boys names I like (after giving it rather a lot of thought for a number of years lol) are;

Evan
Hugh
John

I've only ever known it for a girl, oddly

Ah I saw the title and thought it was for a girl as I only know a girl Laurie.

Its a good name though. Go for it.

I have a Laurie/ Laurence...he is very happy with his name.

Laurie is fine but I'd definitely use Laurence as full name. I like Hugo and John too, and quite like Evan.

Hugo Laurence would make a nice combination IMO.

One of my DS’ names is on your list and we would consider Laurie if we have another boy fabulous taste OP. I like Laurie but we didn’t go with it for either of our boys yet because of the Lorry thing. I could get over that though. I’d definitely do Laurence on the BC but that’s just me! My other son is exclusively shortname but has ‘full name’ on BC, just in case I guess.

It’s a brilliant name - would actually be top of our boys’ list if we were having another DC (which we’re not). We’d definitely have Laurence on the BC though - it’s a great name in its own right, classic but underused and so many great namesakes.

Oddly I strongly dislike most other -ie/diminutive names for boys (Alfie/Freddie-Charlie) but love this one.

My sister liked Laurie or Owen for her last born she went with Owen in the end.

I have a friend who named her son Laurie. He’s 8 years old now and at school constantly made fun of. He’s trying to tell people to call him Larry instead but as he’s registers as Laurie, the teachers still refer to him that way and my friend wants him known as Laurie.

Love it short for Laurence. It's high on my list but sadly husband vetoed.
Makes me think of the character from Little Women.

Love it. I'd go for Laurence on BC. Hugo is nice too but becoming very popular - I know of 3, plus a few Hughs and Hueys.

Definitely Laurence. Laurie alone would be more easily confused with the feminine version (which I'd spell Lori but that can vary) and might not be his preference later.

The only thing that put me off Laurence was old threads on here, pointing out that you can't control nns and he might become Loz.

That's a great list too. I really like Hugh. I've realised that you only ever hear of rather impressive, accomplished Hughs (ok, I know Hugh Grant had an infamous moment), lots of BBC journalists, scientists etc, never criminals or dodgy dealers. It seems a self-assured but gentle name to me.

All the names on your list are lovely. Laurie for a girl is quite a new thing - it’s always historically been a shortening of Laurence so maybe full name on bc, Laurie as nickname.

I like Evan, Hugh and John, and would probably choose Hugh.

I LOVE it. But beware of your accent. The only Laurie I know has a thick London/Essex accent and truly I thought he was 'Lorry' as some sort of nickname!
