Thoughts on Laurie

Piptastic · 07/02/2021 21:33

Planning on TTC later in the year and already love thinking about possible names.

I find boys names quite difficult as there are not many I like. That said, what is everyone's thoughts on Laurie, for a boy?

If you like it, is it ok as a stand alone name or would it need to be Laurence on the BC?

For context other boys names I like (after giving it rather a lot of thought for a number of years lol) are;

Evan
Hugh
John

@1940s

I LOVE it. But beware of your accent. The only Laurie I know has a thick London/Essex accent and truly I thought he was 'Lorry' as some sort of nickname!
Isn’t it pronounced the same as Lorry in any accent? (It sounds the same in my northern accent).

I do like Laurence/Laurie though, always reminds me of Little Women.

I think there's a slight lengthening on the 'laur' in another accent. Almost like Laura but Laurie. Laura isn't pronounced Lorra

Maybe OP needs to canvas opinions on pronunciation as well then Grin

Personally I would pronounce Laurence as “Lorrence” not Law-rence like Laura.

And Hugh Laurie like ‘Hugh Lorry’ not ‘Hugh Law-rie’.

I could be in the minority though.

PolarnOPirate · 08/02/2021 10:36

In ‘American’ (TV accent at least), Laura is like Lorra and Laurie/Lori is law Law-ree.

Lawrence/Lawrie another option of course! I think the lorry thing is unavoidable though.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/02/2021 10:44

Laurie is definitely Lorry and not a drawling 'Law-rie' (like Laura, pr. Law-ra) in my fairly standard English accent. Law-rie would sound like I was trying to fake an American accent.

I think the way it sounds to you depends on whether you're an aural or visual learner. If, like me, you 'see' words when you say them, then Laurie is perceived differently to lorry. If you go only by the sound, they might seem the same to you.

stormelf · 08/02/2021 11:05

I really like it for a boy but for some reason really don't like Lawrence

Sarcobaleno · 08/02/2021 12:07

I have an Uncle Laurie. I love it, great name ❤️

Shampops · 08/02/2021 12:10

I don't like it and I always have to pause slightly before saying it 'law-ree' or 'lorry.

I love Evan from your list.

Swingometer · 08/02/2021 12:14

Great name for a boy but like others I would be inclined to put Laurence on the BC

I really like Hugh and John too
I'm less keen on Evan

Himawarigirl · 08/02/2021 12:21

I love it, it was originally one of my top two. But dh couldn’t come round to Laurence as the full name and if I really thought about it I’m not sure I could have either. I do adore Laurie though.

Piptastic · 08/02/2021 20:46

Wow! Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to comment!

It seems like it's mostly positive, but Laurence on the BC to give (this imaginary future son of mine lol) a choice as an adult. I agree that's sensible, I'm not in love with the full name Laurence but it's nice I do like it.

I also agree with PP that "John" is due a comeback!

I also LOVE Hugh. But my DP's surname starts with an H so I'm not sure about choosing an alliteration. Luckily his surname is three syllables so Hugh may still sound ok. Agree with PP you don't hear of many bad Hugh's (save for Mr Grant's slip up in the 90s of course lol).

Evan is a fairly new contender on my list. Seems less popular than my other likes. I think it's lovely but do worry that it definitely sounds better if you say it in a Welsh accent, and I'm not good at accents or from Wales Wink

I love, love, love Hugh. I think the alliteration is fine with a H surname as long as it's the only repeating sound.

I also really like John and agree it's due a comeback (plus Johnny is a cool nickname imo).

Evan and Laurie (Laurence on the BC) are nice enough, but Hugh and John are simple classics that are currently very underused.

lottiegarbanzo · 08/02/2021 21:05

I like Ivan too. Ivo.

lemorella · 08/02/2021 21:10

Love Laurie - it was on my list but rejected by DH. It's a stand alone name.

PolarnOPirate · 08/02/2021 21:25

OP there are 2 Evans in my son’s nursery (were not in wales) and I’ve heard a couple of others around too, in my son’s school for example. So I think it’s a nice mix of not overused but not bizarre :)

VenusClapTrap · 08/02/2021 22:06

I love it. I know an adorable teenage Lawrence. All good names on your list op.

1940s · 09/02/2021 12:17

Op for what it's worth I liked the name, but after consideration put it on my girls name as Laurel instead.

MimiDaisy11 · 09/02/2021 12:23

I like it as I think of the author Laurie Lee and that's when I first came across the name.

VanillaAndOrange · 10/02/2021 17:58

I like it (pronounced Lorry) for a boy, either on its own or short for Laurence. (In fact I like Laurie better than Laurence but if you're the sort of person who likes to put the formal version on the BC, Laurence is not a bad name!)

I don't like as much for a girl for some reason (maybe just because I really like Laura). I don't think it's ever been very common for girls in the UK, and I've only come across two, one about my age whose full name was Laurie as far as I know, and a friend's daughter who used it as a short/informal form of Lauren.

alwayslemons · 11/02/2021 12:09

Laurence on BC for sure. But Laurie is a lovely name for a boy - reminds me of Little Women!

zingally · 12/02/2021 15:26

I actually really like Laurie. It was on our list for our son, but we decided against it ultimately, as we didn't want people assuming it was short for Laurence, which neither of us liked.
