Aster

Considering for my baby girl. Like the idea of a floral name but really don't want the super-common Lily, Daisy, Florence etc.

Give it to me straight: are kids just going to call her Ass?

Oh, I like that. It feels fresh and the flower is zingy and a bit funky.

FelicityPike · 04/02/2021 15:56

Nice! I like it.

Chilldonaldchill · 04/02/2021 15:58

Interesting. I don't like the look of it but if you spelt it Asta I would feel much more positive. I think Aster looks very masculine. There's a Barbara Vine book with an Asta in it

DPotter · 04/02/2021 16:00

Sorry - it's a no from me.
Although it is the name of a flower, it's also a surname (slightly different spelling) and I really don't like surnames as first names
And yes the obvious nickname or Ass , or Assie

Much nicer floral names out there.

bringbackfonzi · 04/02/2021 16:12

Love it. Unusual but not weird. As for it looking like a male name as per pp - this is one of the reasons I love this name. It's very feminine because it's a flower, but doesn't sound too frilly.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 04/02/2021 16:17

I don't particularly like it, which is weird because one of my kids is called Asher. I think it is the ass sound I don't like.

Enidblyton1 · 04/02/2021 16:19

How about Cassia or Zinnia for floral names?

Aster is ok, but I immediately thought of the surname Astor, rather than the flower. Quite like the masculine sound of it - other flower names do tend to be quite feminine.

jellybe · 04/02/2021 16:21

Astir is a brilliant name. Love it!

HenriettaHeffalump · 04/02/2021 17:04

Not keen! Makes me think of Castor oil!

Astrid?

VenusClapTrap · 04/02/2021 17:06

I really like it. I once read a book with a character in called Asta Sollilja, meaning ‘beloved sun lily’ which I thought was beautiful, and I fancied Asta as a name ever since.

minniemango · 04/02/2021 17:09

I liked it for one of mine but my DH immediately said "aster mouth".

Glitterinthegrey · 04/02/2021 17:11

I'm not keen on Aster, it's too much of a surname and the potential shortenings aren't nice.

Floral names are lovely though. How about Leilani, Fleur, Violet, Dahlia or Heather?

Dowermouse · 04/02/2021 17:14

Makes me think of Oswald Mosley, so a probably not from me, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what someone called their daughter.

Seainasive · 04/02/2021 17:14

Love it. It’s a good strong name.

IridecentPearl · 04/02/2021 17:15

Absolutely love it!

Roselilly36 · 04/02/2021 17:17

I love it, gorgeous name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/02/2021 17:30

It's lovely, but I'd be slightly worried about the Ass thing too (so no help there!). I second pp suggestions of Zinnia or Dahlia for less common florals or maybe Lilac or Briar if you want something less girly/feminine sounding.

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 17:32

Aster la vista

campion · 04/02/2021 17:36

It'll be confused with Esther.

Honeywort · 04/02/2021 17:38

How about Jonquil?

VenusClapTrap · 04/02/2021 17:40

Nerine is another very rare floral, if you want suggestions.

EvilEdna1 · 04/02/2021 17:49

It was on my list for DD. I love it. DH didn't sadly..

SionnachRua · 04/02/2021 17:56

No to Aster. Asta is very pretty though.
I like the Dahlia and Zinnia suggestions. Azalea is nice too, though I'm not sure I'd use it - would remind me of Iggy.

HenriettaHeffalump · 04/02/2021 17:57

Asta I prefer, but she might get Asda.
