Really love Silas, it’s our runaway favourite. BUT.

He’d be brother to Tydus and Beatrice. And some people are already beginning to shorten Tydus’ name to Ty, and Silas is inevitably going to end up being shortened to Si, isn’t it? I can’t have a Ty and a Si, I’ll feel like I live in a cartoon.

Eli or Leon we both agree on but don’t love. We also really like Lennox and Brando but worry they’re a bit obscure (and we are neither Scottish nor Italian) so they’ve been on the “no” list.

Help! He’s going to be here soon!

Eli, Leon and Lennox are nice.

I do like Silas, but don't think I'd pick it if I already had a Tydus and Beatrice.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 02/02/2021 22:48

Go for Silas if it's the name you love. I do like Lennox though. Brando is a bit much and he'd have to endure a LOT of 'I coulda been a contender' impersonations throughout his life. That would be dull.

Tydus and Silas sound like the name of an extortionately expensive paint manufacturers. Which isn't a bad thing!

Marcipex · 02/02/2021 22:54

Luca is nice and goes with your other names.

partyatthepalace · 03/02/2021 00:23

Love Silas but see what you mean...

Love Eli, as long as nn for Elijah / Elisha. Don’t mind Leon. Lennox sounds downmarket to me, Brando downmarket and weird.

Other thoughts... Seth, Jude, Francis, Jerome, Rory, Augustus, Blaise, Gabriel, Tristram, Raphael, Joel

MrsEricBana · 03/02/2021 00:29

Leon jumps out at me as being a particularly strong and under used name. Really like it. As agree with you OP re Ty & Si, unfortunately. Eli & Lennox nice too but Brando not for me.

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2021 01:13

I love Lennox and Leon.

Silas is not for me.

Figgyboa · 03/02/2021 01:34

I like Lennox and Eli. I'm not sure why but Silas makes me think of a serial killer, sorry!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/02/2021 01:37

I think Tydus and Silas sound too similar, sorry. How about Elias? - the extra syllable stops it from sounding too samey with Tydus imo. Eli and Leon are also nice enough (although you could have Elias nn Eli too), but I'm not keen on Lennox or Brando myself (too surname for me).

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 07:31

I think they are far too close sorry. Say them out loud and it’s a bit Don and Ron!

How about Seth?

Rowenasemolina · 03/02/2021 07:34

Silas. He is going to live with his brother for 2 decades, and apart from him for 6. Most people he meets in his FB life won’t know his nick name rhymes with his brothers nick name. I think it’s fine to have rhyming nicknames at home during your childhood.if they are close, they will like it. Either child can choose a different nickname if they don’t like it Their full names don’t rhymme

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 07:35

And I don't think either Leon or Eli measure up at all. Lennox and Brando sound fashion-y even though they’re not. Back to the drawing board?!

Josiah?

Could be Jo for short. I like Silas. Smile

Chilldonaldchill · 03/02/2021 11:38

Go for Silas.
I can't imagine shortening it to Si when it's a relatively simple name already.
Tydus is a bit more clunky so it is more understandable.

lucymagoo · 03/02/2021 11:42

@Figgyboa because there was a serial killer called Silas on hollyoaks maybe. Ruins the name for me personally but it's objectively quite a nice nice with that association removed

Historydweeb · 03/02/2021 11:44

Silas reminds me of silage (country bumpkin) sorry realised this isnt the point

Crikeyblimey · 03/02/2021 11:46

I know a Silas and it gets shortened to Sal. If that helps.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 03/02/2021 14:08

I dont think they'd end up the same nickname - Id say Ty like "tie" and Silas I'd probably nickname Sil or Sal. I like Eli and Leon but not Lennox (sounds like a place, and not a fancy one) or Brando (too toxic masculinity).

fairlygoodmother · 03/02/2021 14:19

I see your point. I wouldn’t let it stop you using Silas though if it’s the only name you love.

Do you like Miles or Giles? Similar but less likely to be shortened that way.

I like Eli and Leon, Lennox and Brando both sound very aggressive to me but you could consider Brandon as a given name for Brando?

bridgetreilly · 03/02/2021 15:00

Use it and just make sure that you personally always call them by their full names. In situations where people only know one of them, it's fine, but altogether you don't have to use the short forms.

GwendolineWindowlene · 03/02/2021 15:07

It's not just Si and Ty that sound similar though, Silas and Tydus are pretty rhymey too.

Elijah is great.

I also like Elias, Jed, Jem, Judah. Any name that sounds like the owner can drive a horse-drawn plough bare chested with lovely forearms is good.

CrocodileFondue · 03/02/2021 15:20

They are quite similar, imagine yelling Tydus or Silas across a park, you'd quite easily end up with the wrong sibling.

Ohwhatbliss · 03/02/2021 15:41

I knew a Silas who had a brother Jago? Do you like that name perhaps?

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 17:15

Jago is great.

Elijah - Eli is the whiniest sound imaginable. Can't stand it - and another one that sounds terrible in a lot of accents.

DinosaurDiana · 03/02/2021 17:16

I like it but it makes me think of a silo.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/02/2021 17:20

I like Silas. Not sure it goes with the other name, I agree.

I think Seth is a similar type of name. Or Amos.
