Miles/Myles/Milo

Liked Miles for years and its now high on our boys name list so doing some proper thinking.

Its 147th and reasonably stable, but have seen it mentioned a lot on here as a suggestion. Prehaps because I'm paying attention now!?

But I also keep seeing Myles, which is rising more quickly and is more used at 123rd. To me it feels a bit "unique spelling" which isn't my thing, I suppose I don't want it to keep growing and become faddy.

The 2 spellings combined would be ranked 70th which suddenly feels high!

Then there's Milo at 108th too, which is obviously different but again feels more trendy.

Basically overall do people think it could spike and become quite dated? Or there be confusion over spellings. Or am I overthinking....

Hmm watching this OP, as Miles is the top of my list too!

LizFlowers · 02/02/2021 12:04

Miles.

Parkandride · 02/02/2021 12:08

It would definitely be Miles, its just the other spelling and similar name made me think more about the overall feel of it Smile

I have a Mylo, I call him Myles as a nickname -or Mylie -Moo.
He is a horse though 😀

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 02/02/2021 12:43

I'm having a Miles by ELCS next week :)

DeeThree · 02/02/2021 12:46

I would see Myles as the name and Miles as a measure of distance. Regarding popularity I don't think it matters as they're both pronounced the same.

July2021babygirl · 02/02/2021 13:36

I like the myles spelling as miles I think of as a measurement 😂 (just me I imagine) I agree with your concerns about Milo. I don’t think myles will gain too much popularity, think it’s a good balance of well known but not common. I think it’s a very strong name and if you’ve always loved it you shouldn’t be put off. Quite a few names I’ve heard discussed a lot on forums, but in real life I don’t know anyone of those names. I actually don't know anyone called myles of any age personally x

bridgetreilly · 02/02/2021 13:38

Miles.

None of them are all that popular, honestly.

Firebird83 · 02/02/2021 14:55

I love Miles, this spelling.

Firebird83 · 02/02/2021 14:56

I see it as quite classic. I don’t think it will date.

kerkyra · 02/02/2021 15:20

I have a Miles and he's the only one I know( early teens).

KirstenBlest · 02/02/2021 16:48

Miles not Myles. Milo is a milky drink.

AugustRose · 02/02/2021 16:53

If I was going with Miles/Myles it would be the Miles spelling. I won't be having any more kids but I prefer Milo which would have been on the list for any more boys.

Pinkjellies · 02/02/2021 18:22

I gave birth to a Miles last week! We had the same concerns regarding spelling and popularity but in the end just went for it. It ticked our boxes in terms of being classic but unusual and there weren’t any other boys names that we loved just as much. We don’t currently know of any other Miles (babies or older) so if it becomes super popular that’s out of our control and we’ll just have to deal with it.

joystir59 · 02/02/2021 18:23

My JRT is called Milo and he is an arse.

Chilldonaldchill · 02/02/2021 18:24

I think they are less common than that statistic makes them sound. I wonder how many were actually born. I was at uni with two then the next ones I met are my DC's age - 18. I know one other aged 11 and I know a 19 year old Milo. I think it's one of those names which isn't so rare that people raise their eyebrows but is uncommon enough that you're unlikely to meet many others.

Parkandride · 02/02/2021 19:38

@joystir59

My JRT is called Milo and he is an arse.
Thats because he's a JRT Grin

Congratulations @pinkjellies and good luck @SpunBodgeSquarepants clearly you both have a fine choice in names!

I do agree if we like the name then just go for it, but what's lockdown for if not overthinking. Could be a girl anyway!

I don't know any Milo Miles or Myles
It's probably me to blame for it's mentioned on here, I often recommend and suggest Miles on here as it's one of my favourite names.

If you're adding up the spellings you'd have to add up lots of other spellings too (like Matthew and Mathew, Thomas and Tommy and so on and so on), so Miles would be much lower than 70th if that makes sense

partyatthepalace · 03/02/2021 00:38

Miles is a classic.

A very calming name!

MercyBodle · 03/02/2021 00:43

Even with those combined numbers it's not that popular. I'd say more 'current' than popular. Since it's a name that has been used, though not in large numbers, for centuries, it's probably not going to spike in numbers. In the end though, I think you need to use the name you love and not be over concerned with numbers.

sorryforswearing · 03/02/2021 00:48

I love Miles and have for years. I hope it doesn’t become too popular but you never know.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/02/2021 02:24

It not my taste and I think it has become a bit trendy (particularly the Milo version) but if you love it, I say stick with the Miles spelling - that feels a bit more classic.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 03/02/2021 12:05

I think Miles is getting popular. Chrissy Teagan and... Who is her husband? I forget. But they have a Miles.

user1471467504 · 03/02/2021 12:22

I have a Myles, he's 12. He is and always has been the only Myles (or Miles) in his school. I love the name, he is hit and miss I think he would have preferred a more popular name. He also always complains that people spell his name wrong. However I am still in love with the name but may have chosen to spell it Miles with hindsight.

YoniAndGuy · 03/02/2021 17:25

Miles is so far the normal spelling that Myles is just making life difficult for no reason, I think.
