Sasha for a boy

Hi guys! My husband and I are having a terrible time trying to pick boy names. My absolute favorite name is Sasha for a boy but he thinks it's too girly. I had a boy Sasha at my school when I was a kid and I've loved it for a boy every since. In your opinions, do you think this or a boys or girls name?
My husbands favorite name is Desmond (Dessy for short), which I also like but don't love.

I absolutely love Sasha for a boy. I think it's nice on a girl too but I definitely prefer it for a boy. I prefer it to Desmond, which I don't hate in a quirky kind of way.

BaronessVonCake · 24/01/2021 01:07

Love the name Sasha- very cool and definitely a boy's name. I have met a few Sashas from Russia and Eastern Europe.

Desmond? Really? That's one name that doesn't need to be making a comeback!

VillaMia · 24/01/2021 01:10

I went to school with a boy called Sasha. He remains one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met.

GrimDamnFanjo · 24/01/2021 01:11

I love Sasha! Is it from Alexander?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 24/01/2021 01:13

I like it but for some reason Sacha seems like a more “masculine” spelling to me if that was w concern

MiddlesexGirl · 24/01/2021 01:15

I love it. Never heard it for a girl so definitely a boy's name here.
Sascha Zverev the tennis player is an Alexander so yes that does seem to be one derivation.

Bouledeneige · 24/01/2021 01:18

Love it.

Sasha Powell. Part of Storror parkour team. Legend.

HadEnoughOfBears · 24/01/2021 01:22

I love the name Sasha.
Absolutely I know it is actually a traditional male name however all 4 Sashas I know IRL are all girls.

AlexaShutUp · 24/01/2021 01:23

I love sasha for a boy. Common in Eastern Europe and I've also come across it several times amongst south Asian men.

I quite like it for a girl as well, but definitely don't see it as a girly name.

Not keen on Desmond at all, I'm afraid.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/01/2021 02:24

While I much prefer Sasha as a nn for Alexander rather than as a given name (particularly as Sasha is quite feminine sounding in English speaking countries), Sasha is still nicer than Desmond imo. I struggle to imagine a Desmond under 50 - its the same style as Dennis or Nigel to me.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 24/01/2021 02:27

I prefer Desmond or Vincent ( Vinnie)

ALittleBitofVitriol · 24/01/2021 02:31

I love Sasha/Sacha/Sascha for a boy too.
Desmond is fine, I can see the appeal.

alexdgr8 · 24/01/2021 02:40

sascha is a nickname.
name him Alexander if you want that nn.
desmond is fine too.
i like most traditional names, but not nigel or clive.

Shmithecat2 · 24/01/2021 02:46

How about Sachiel? Then you can use Sacha as a nn?

LudoTrouble · 24/01/2021 02:51

I know a little boy called Desmond/Dessie. It's certainly grown on me.

I do think of Sacha as feminine, purely because I knew girls called Sasha or Sascha at school and no male Sacha's.

Tavannach · 24/01/2021 02:57

I really like Sasha but thought it was Sacha for a boy. It is a nn for Alexander.
Desmond gets a thumbs down from me, I'm afraid.

Kote · 24/01/2021 02:58

I really like it for a boy but have only ever met female Sashas so that would probably put me off.

Meggymoo777 · 24/01/2021 03:23

I love it too and I know a Sacha!

With @GingerAndTheBiscuits though, for some reason the "Sacha" spelling seems more suited to a male, maybe just because I know a male Sacha though?

elfran · 24/01/2021 03:30

Love it for a boy, it's cool, modern-sounding but classic and international. For a girl it feels a little more dated, American, dare I say downmarket. Though that's just my experience of Sashas, I guess!

Unfortunately I doubt strangers on the internet will be able to change your husband's gut feeling about it, however. Can you find a name somewhere between Sasha and Desmond?

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 24/01/2021 04:06

Sacha for a boy is awesome!

But Desmond 😲

Not Desmond. Please not Desmond! He might end up as Des and Dessy is almost as bad. Reminds me of a racist Londoner from the 70s for some reason

DramaAlpaca · 24/01/2021 04:11

Sasha is a male name, but it's a diminutive of Alexander. It's not great as a given name on its own. Alexander on the birth certificate and Sasha/Sacha as a diminutive is much better.

As for Desmond, seriously the less said the better. It doesn't need reviving.

partyatthepalace · 24/01/2021 09:36

I like Sacha for a boy but I would spell it like this, it’s the usual spelling for boys and girls as a short form for Alexander / Alexandra. I would also call him Alexander on the birth certificate so he clearly had a boys name. Sacha as a full name is a bit odd, especially for a boy.

The Sasha spelling does feel more feminine (because of dress sashes I guess) so avoid that.

Desmond/Dessie is absolutely awful and downmarket so either get your husband to agree to Alexander nn Sacha or find something else.

Chilldonaldchill · 24/01/2021 18:01

I know an 18 year old Sacha (male). I like it.
I'm afraid I dislike Desmond.

Neolara · 24/01/2021 18:07

Desmond is absolutely awful imo. Sorry. I really like Sasha. I almost called my dd Sasha, but at the very last minute had a change of heart.

VenusClapTrap · 24/01/2021 18:34

I love Sasha/Sacha for a boy!

Desmond is terrible.
