Sasha for a boy

Hi guys! My husband and I are having a terrible time trying to pick boy names. My absolute favorite name is Sasha for a boy but he thinks it's too girly. I had a boy Sasha at my school when I was a kid and I've loved it for a boy every since. In your opinions, do you think this or a boys or girls name?
My husbands favorite name is Desmond (Dessy for short), which I also like but don't love.

I don't like it. Sounds like a girls name.

pinkpinecone · 24/01/2021 18:46

Really like Sasha for a boy. Desmond isn't great at all.

UpTaeHighDoh · 24/01/2021 18:57

When I hear 'Sasha' I automatically think GIRL.
When I hear 'Desmond' I automatically think OLD MAN.

Prianiki · 24/01/2021 19:04

Desmond is fine. I don't know why people are so down about it. It's quite a nice name, really.

Sasha is also a lovely name, but I'm afraid I agree with your husband. It has feminine connotations. Put Alexander on the birth certificate so that your son has other options should he be bothered by this.

I don't mind Sacha for a boy but I do think of Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) and Desmond I think of Tutu.. that's just my annoying brain though!

AuntieStella · 24/01/2021 19:28

Sasha is lovely!

The spelling varies because if the ways different European languages transliterate the original cyrillic

It's predominantly a boys name if you look across Europe

RuthW · 24/01/2021 20:27

Sasha is awful for a boy. Desmund is lovely.

Coriandersucks · 24/01/2021 20:31

Sacha is great for a boy - was top of our list but we didn’t go for it in account of surname starting with an ‘sh’...

Desmond just reminds me of that 80s/90s sitcom but that’s showing my age.

LarkDescending · 24/01/2021 22:10

I know 3 female Sashas, a female Sacha and a male Sacha. Personally I love it for a girl, but obviously it has a long history as a predominantly male name.

I really couldn’t get on board with Desmond. Might Edmund appeal?

Onlinedilema · 24/01/2021 22:56

Sasha is lovely. Desmond is terrible.

Longdistance · 24/01/2021 23:03

My Serbian friend is called Sacha. It suits him.

LorrieLu · 25/01/2021 11:50

Thank you all for your input! I don't like Alexander all that much and neither does hubby so probably won't go with that. I can understand the dislike for Desmond, I had that thought at first but it's grown on me. Not as much as Sasha though haha I just really love it. We've still got about 18 weeks to think about it. Perhaps another name might pop up in the mean time.

To me Sasha is now unisex but of the 2 I much prefer Desmond

Riapia · 25/01/2021 13:41

I went to school with twin brothers Sasha and Misha.
What about Sacheveral.

Respectabitch · 25/01/2021 13:44

I would put Alexander on the birth cert and use Sasha as a derivative, Russian-style. This would also allow him more options when he gets older if he doesn't like Sasha. Without a Russian or Eastern European connection I suspect it will read as feminine to most people, yes.

Respectabitch · 25/01/2021 13:46

I went to school with twin brothers Sasha and Misha.
Both classic Russian diminutives. The names on their birth certs were presumably Alexander and Mikhael (Michael).

hillarypcof · 25/01/2021 14:13

Shakira named her baby boy Sasha. If it's good enough for her, it's good enough for any of us haha!

Beautiful name 😍💙

Resistthethoughtpolice · 25/01/2021 14:16

The fact that you've got to explain it would put me off.

Itawapuddytat · 25/01/2021 14:49

I know two men called Sasha, one Russian, one German. Both are actually Alexander ( actually the Russian one is Alexei)

Thimbleberries · 25/01/2021 15:14

I knew a Sacha, but he changed to being called Alex for secondary school as he was fed up of being told it was a girl's name. Luckily he was an Alexander, so it was easy enough to do. He did have Russian background, but grew up in the UK.

I knew a couple of female Sasha's when growing up.

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/01/2021 15:22

That's my name and I am a woman, I've always had compliments on it. Very common for boys in Eastern Europe, Russia and India.
