It's personal taste obviously, but to be honest it's easier to say what names I don't find twee - as most names that end in an "ee" sound (ie/y), sound cutesy or twee to me! Absolutely fine as nicknames but I'm not keen on them as given/BC names personally.

I do find some exceptions - with Mary or Henry for instance, there have been so many Kings and Queens with those names, that they have more of a feeling of strength to me which helps overcome the "cute" ending sound.

Equally with names like Sylvie, Amelie, Rosalie, Coralie (maybe even Sophie) - they have a exotic French sound to me, that again helps overcome the cutesy/twee imo.

I also find names like Verity and Felicity okay, because the virtue meaning of the name is so obvious to me, it again helps distract from the sweet "ee" ending.

Anything too cutesie and double barrelled names that are two syllable - one syllable. Girls names ending in 'ie'.

That said, I wouldn't judge anyone for using these names. I just think they sound tweed and I don't like them.

There seems to be a theme here - they all seem to end in "ie/y"!

I think for most people it tends to be some names that end with an ee sound - Toby, Lucy, Emily

Nicknames ending with ee (ok for a nn but twee for a full name) - Rosie, Tilly, Freddie, Alfie

Some flower names - Lily, Primrose, Lavender

Some Victoriana names - Elsie, Mabel, Albert

Clearly not all of these - Henry, Rory, Mary, Verity don’t sound twee, nor do Rose and Iris, or Arthur and Edith. But if you avoid the categories above you will probably avoid twee.

I think names like Lexie, Hallie, and combos like Tilly-Rose, Trixie-May are regarded as both twee and downmarket.

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 17:27

Oh yeah, and overly frilly names - Arabella, Aurelia, Orlando, Jacobi.

ChristmasinJune · 16/01/2021 17:29

Not any specific name to be honest, that's just personal taste. A trend I do find a bit twee is deciding on a nickname before the baby's born. Not sure why, I just find it cloying 🤷‍♂️

PolarnOPirate · 16/01/2021 17:29

Milly, Tilly, Maisie, Daisy, Evie, Blossom, Bertie, Wilf.

I know siblings Matilda and Billy....... Tilly and Billy.

PolarnOPirate · 16/01/2021 17:30

Oh yes, anything like Arabella, Annabella, Ariella, Isabella..... anything frilly!

KarmaNoMore · 16/01/2021 17:30

Any name with two syllables ending in I/y. Mostly because they have not been names but nicknames in the first place.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/01/2021 17:31

Tweedledum and Tweedledee come to mind.

Twickerhun · 16/01/2021 17:31

Lots of flower names like daisy, primrose. Hyphenated names ending in Mai or Mae etc.

Bilingualspingual · 16/01/2021 17:33

Maisie and Betsy
