Alice?

Any thoughts on the name Alice? Our DS has a classic English name and hoping this will match? Alice didn't immediately spring out at me but it's really, really grown on me recently. Classic, not twee, hopefully won't date like the resurgence in 'old lady names' (Ivy, Edie etc) and hopefully not too overused?

I'm aware there's a song people don't like but I'd honestly never heard of it until looking at baby name boards so wondering if it's quite an old song?

@bumblingalonghappily I love love love Alice! My husbands called Alex, so we wouldn't ever be able to use it, but it's so beautiful x

insancerre · 13/01/2021 07:36

It’s lovely
I work with children and it’s not very common

Starryskiesinthesky · 13/01/2021 07:37

Alice is a good classic name. There are quite a few of them though.

StealthPolarBear · 13/01/2021 07:38

Yes there is another one AFAIK in my Alice's school but that's it

Shutupyoutart · 13/01/2021 07:41

Love it! Wanted to use it but dh wasnt as keen as me. Go for it op it's a beautiful name.

Duskyy · 13/01/2021 07:43

It's my DD's name, so I'm slightly biased... She's the only one in her school atm, and she has told me many times before that she loves her name.

bumblingalonghappily · 13/01/2021 07:44

Oh these are all lovely responses, thank you Smile

There are two songs come to mind ....

Alice the camel

&

Alice, Alice, who the fuck is Alice?

AnxiousAnnie86 · 13/01/2021 08:22

I've never heard an Alice song!! 😂 I just love it so much, I do not think it's twee at all, I think it's beautiful

Amdone123 · 13/01/2021 08:30

I too can only ever think of the song, but it is a lovely name and if you like it, go for it.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2021 08:32

It is my name, and has served me well for 5 decades. People largely know how to sirloin abs pronounce it, it’s clearly a girls name, short enough to fit on forms. I was named after Alice in Wonderland.

The “who the ” song has been a monitor irritation for around 15 mins collectively in that time.

“ Alice the Camel” has played a bigger part in my life, particularly as a Cub leader, but it’s a completely in offensive, slightly funny song. Even as a geeky 8 year old Brownie no one teased me about it, and I was the child that go teased and bullied about everything.

I did marry someone with the same surname as a very famous man whose stage name is Alice. I didn’t initially change my name (for professional reasons, rather than rockstar reasons), but even when I did it wasn’t really a “thing”. A slightly amusing/boring comment occasionally and a few CDs for wedding presents!

Abbreviations are rare, Al or Ali, in equal measure, but my long standing nicknames have been based on other aspects of me.

It was not a well used name when I was a child, and I’ve probably only ever met 5-10 around my age. It’s nice to see it rising in popularity.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2021 08:32
  • sirloin = spell!
Flippy87 · 13/01/2021 08:32

I think it’s a good name. Who cares about the song?! Would be a silly reason not to pick the name. I know a lot of Alice’s my age, not sure how popular it is now though

Sandybanana7 · 13/01/2021 08:34

Yeah I like it . Go for it op!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2021 08:36

It's a great name. Never heard either of those songs. Alice in Wonderland is the association most people would have and as that is a timeless classic, like the name, that will last a lot longer than an obscure pop song.

BadgeronaMoped · 13/01/2021 08:36

It's a lovely name, I had it on my list too but I found that I couldn't get past that bloody song Sad it's not the sort of thing anyone normal would even sing or quote, especially at a baby/little girl, seems more of a drunk idiot thing, so I wouldn't worry about it.

DelurkingAJ · 13/01/2021 08:40

My name and I agree wholeheartedly with @BikeRunSki. Easy to spell, well known but not overused (I’m one of two in an organisation of over 1,000 people) but used across all ages.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2021 08:57

🙌 waves @DelurkingAJ, I’ve just checked my work Outlook contacts list. 25 Alice’s out of 12,0000 employees. There were only 3 of us when I started, 16 years ago. Shows how it has gained popularity.

Angel2702 · 13/01/2021 09:00

Love this name, it’s my middle name and I always wished it was my first name.

thisismadness77 · 13/01/2021 09:01

My almost two 2 year old was so very nearly Alice. We went with Alba, but I do love Alice.

AriesTheRam · 13/01/2021 09:03

Anyone over 25 would think of the chubby brown song

Choice4567 · 13/01/2021 09:03

I love it. It is growing popularity though. It’s not as unique as I thought when I picked it!

Luckyelephant1 · 13/01/2021 09:20

It's really nice.

Yes there is that who the f is Alice song but it's not hugely well known and wouldn't be the same as calling her Roxanne (put on your red light) for example.
