Boys names Ted/teddy

Hey all! Do you think Ted/teddy is okay as a name on its own rather then a nickname or shortened form Theodore or Edward? Theodore is my best friends fave name - to be shortened to Theo and I'm just not a massive fan of Edward xx

I think you could do Ted nn Teddy

AnxiousAnnie86 · 12/01/2021 11:38

@Sunbird24 yeah that's my thinking, he may not want Teddy when he's older, but Ted could be okay x

I think Ted is fine on it's own on the birth certificate.

RaraRachael · 12/01/2021 11:40

No - Teddy isn't a name. It might be cute as a baby but I can't imagine a surly teenage boy being happy with that name Grin

Doilooklikeatourist · 12/01/2021 11:41

How about Edwin ? NN Ted ,Teddy

Mistlewoeandwhine · 12/01/2021 11:42

No it’s awful. Give your child a proper name then use Ted as a nickname.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 12/01/2021 11:43

Edward is a great name anyway. You can get the full name if he turns out to be a judge or something plus Ted, Teddy, Ed and Eddie.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 12/01/2021 11:43

@Doilooklikeatourist my husband doesn't like Edwin at all :( I just love Ted, but I didn't know if it was birth certificate appropriate 😂

I'm really really struggling with boys names... I feel like it's always the same names suggested everywhere too :(

I think Ted on it’s own is fine. I wouldn’t put Teddy on a birth certificate.

PurplePansy05 · 12/01/2021 11:45

Sorry to ruin it, but it always makes me think of Ted Bundy too much Netflix. Which is a shame because I like the name.

MisiSam · 12/01/2021 11:45

My 19 month old ds is just called Ted. We get lots of complements on his name and it really suits him.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/01/2021 11:48

I'm not keen on the nicknames as given names thing, so would still stick something more formal on the on the BC personally (Edgar/Edwin/Edmund even Thaddeus?). But If you really hate the longer versions, I agree with your thinking that Ted looks better than Teddy for when he's an adult.

MercyBodle · 12/01/2021 13:07

I think Ted is fine on its own. I love it too. Teddy works as a nickname but not on the birth certificate.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 12/01/2021 13:22

I never thought of Ted bundy!!! Oh no.

Other names we like are Sebastian x

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/01/2021 13:27

But you could probably find a serial killer for most names... Jack (the ripper), Fred (West), etc.
If you really like Ted don’t let that put you off.

IckleBear · 12/01/2021 13:56

Agree with pp. As long as your surname isn't with B or similar to the serial killer I don't see a problem! Ted is much nicer than Sebastian!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/01/2021 13:58

I love Ted. It can stand alone as a name and I don't think the association with Bundy leaps to mind-it is a lovely name.

I would not put Teddy on birth certificate and tbh I'd probably call him Edward or Theodore on birth certificate.

Tickly · 12/01/2021 13:58

My friend has a Ted (on birth cert). We have a DC whose nickname is sometimes Ted. I think it's lovely.

Whatsyourflava · 12/01/2021 13:59

Ted is lovely on its own and definitely birth certificate appropriate these days

Don't forget Tommy, Albie, Ronnie, Alfie are all shortenings that are all in the top 100

People on this message board will no doubt say it's not birth certificate appropriate to use a shortening by the statistics show we are definitely in the minority thinking that!

TeddyUrsa · 12/01/2021 13:59

I have a surly teenage Teddy! Suits him Grin

He is 14 and he is Teddy on his birth certificate. He refers to himself as both Teddy and Ted and I call him both.

He likes his name. He's never ever had one 'bullying' comment like some posters like to make out will be a definite whenever this name comes up and really, if you like the name then just go for it.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 12/01/2021 13:59

@IckleBear haha no its H doesnt sound anything like Bundy, i wouldnt put Teddy on BC i think Ted is fine though... will keep trying to think of others but boys names are so hard!!!

OP posts:
Whatsyourflava · 12/01/2021 14:00

Sebastian is lovely but i prefer Ted

Whatsyourflava · 12/01/2021 14:00

I'd you like Sebastian you might also like Nathaniel

Beamur · 12/01/2021 14:01

My friends Ted is an Edwyn.
But I think Ted is an acceptable full name by itself.

TeddyUrsa · 12/01/2021 14:02

The serial killer thing is nonsense. How far do you take this? We could make most male names fit with a serial killer theme.

And remember OP, people 'become' their names.
