Boys names Ted/teddy

Hey all! Do you think Ted/teddy is okay as a name on its own rather then a nickname or shortened form Theodore or Edward? Theodore is my best friends fave name - to be shortened to Theo and I'm just not a massive fan of Edward xx

I know an adult Ted and it suits him really well!

Thehollyandtheirony · 12/01/2021 14:03

I think Teddy on the birth certificate is fine. I don’t actually see the point in giving your child a formal/ long name you never intend to use. By the time he is an adult, there will be a much wider range of names in use than when we were coming of age.

VenusClapTrap · 12/01/2021 14:17

I would put Edward/Edwin/Edgar/Edouardo on his birth certificate. Definitely not Teddy, and I think Ted is borderline personally.

FippertyGibbett · 12/01/2021 14:19

I knew a Teddy who changed his name back to Edward when he went to high school, so I’d stick with Ted.

Firebird83 · 12/01/2021 14:38

You could have it short for Edmund or Edgar

MammaMiaWallace · 12/01/2021 14:54

Someone I know has a ds with “Thomas Edward” on the birth certificate but is called Ted or Teddy daily (still just a toddler).

Sausagedog1 · 12/01/2021 16:39

Ted on birth certificate is fine. Teddy as a nickname

MisiSam · 12/01/2021 17:43

When ds was a few days old my husband walked in and greeted us like this.
Hello misisam

Hello Mr Bundy

Haha my ds is definitely not like Ted Bundy though. He is a sweetheart.

BlahBlahPo · 30/01/2021 16:51

If it helps, my son's middle name is Edison. We did consider it as a first name and would have shortened it to Ted.

partyatthepalace · 30/01/2021 20:06

I think Ted/Teddy is sweet, but deffo not as full names - it's the name of a child's toy. I think it's like calling your daughter Dolly as a full name, too twee for an adult all the time.

I'd put Edward or Theodore on the birth cert (or Edwin, Edmund, Edgar or Thaddius)

gratitutesmynewattitude · 30/01/2021 21:28

Love Ted not Teddy, love Bert not Bertie, Sebastian is a great name as and nn Seb. I really dislike y / ie names on birth certificate.

gratitutesmynewattitude · 30/01/2021 21:33

I happen to have a lot of 'associates 'on Facebook who name given their children nickname names as their birth certificate names. Think Lottie type names uhhhh, just not my cup of tea officially. I think nn develop.

FenEel · 30/01/2021 21:38

Ted/ Teddy is my favourite boys name but DH didn’t like Edward so we didn’t use it, as I wasn’t keen on Ted as a name by itself. Shame because DS is such a Teddy! Edmund is another option?

TheWitchCirce · 30/01/2021 21:42

My Ted is a teen and is rocking it!

britespark1 · 30/01/2021 21:52

I’m biased as I have an Edward who is nearly 8 and we always call him Ted. I wouldn’t want that on his birthday certificate though. I just feel the full name gives HIM options as he grows up.

ShinyGreenElephant · 30/01/2021 21:58

Its incredibly common at the moment so I think by the time all the little Teddys are adult, there will be so many of them it will no longer seem like a "cutesy" name, and just be seen as totally normal

Onwednesdayswewearblack · 30/01/2021 22:00

Teddy =Bear, Ted=Bundy.

TechnoDino · 30/01/2021 22:03

I know 3 boys named Teddy. It’s the new ‘naughty boy’ name, accorting to my YR teacher friend.

samanthawashington · 31/01/2021 10:08

As an adult Ted would sound quite (dare I say) common? Teddy quite ridiculous

I'd go for Edward or Theodore

Saying that I call my Alexander, Al.

WellityWellityWellity · 31/01/2021 10:15

I'd go with Sebastian.

I do like Ted, (unfortunate about Ted Bundy! I'd never made that connection before, but he does still get talked about a lot I think. They loosely base some characters on him in movies and tv shows, so maybe more relevant than you'd think)?

Has Edmund been suggested yet? Could that become Teddy?

WellityWellityWellity · 31/01/2021 10:15

There is a character in Prison Break called Theodore / Teddy Bagwell...now thinking he is meant to be like Ted Bundy! Would make sense.

RuthW · 31/01/2021 10:31

It's awful imo. Theodore, Edward, Edmund or Edwin are lovely.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 31/01/2021 11:26

Sebastian is a fantastic name.

I know that popularity doesn't bother many people but Ted / Teddy really is very, very popular indeed.
