Is Dorothy popular?

Just that really. I love Dorothy and feel like it's on a lot of baby name threads and lots of people say they love it but is it actually popular? Will there be half a dozen Dorothy rubbing around reception in 4 years time?

Running around even

It's 187 in the official name charts in 2019
So there are 186 more popular girls names out there

You might see the name more than you rox the on name boards. People on these boards often suggest slightly more unusual names that people might not have thought of. A name like olivia which had been the number 1 name for years is less likely to be suggested as people will assume the poster had already considered Olivia, Oliver etc

FluffyEggsontoast · 11/01/2021 19:19
  • more than you would expect on name boards
OverTheRainbow88 · 11/01/2021 19:19

I know one who is 96 and one who is 3

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/01/2021 19:24

It's popular around here (East London) and I really like it. It makes me laugh when I hear someone shouting "Come on Dorothy and Margaret, catch up" and I look around expecting to see two little old ladies or Jack Russell terriers, but in fact Dorothy and Margaret are two tiny girls encased in Polarn O Pyret pootling along on balance bikes.

peapotter · 11/01/2021 19:32

No, but I think it will be “peaky”. I don’t think there will be lots in the school year, but it will be obvious how old she is when she’s an adult, and there is a risk it will date.

That said, there are lots of ways to shorten it so that makes it much more versatile.

YouBoggleMyMind · 11/01/2021 19:36

I know 1 Dorothy who is 18 months and goes by the name Dotty most of the time.

ClinkyMonkey · 11/01/2021 19:38

No idea, but it's lovely. Sorry, I'm no help whatsoever....GrinGrin

VinylDetective · 11/01/2021 19:38

Every name dates. Mine’s a classic English name that’s been in common use since at least the 16th century but it’s completely out of favour now. Give it ten years and I bet it makes a comeback. Dorothy is very pretty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2021 20:07

On the ONS website you can find out how many Dorothy's were born in your area last year, so I'd check that. But personally I think it's a name that hasn't yet really moved past it's "old lady" image and will date badly, sorry.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/01/2021 20:10

I'd think that most Dorothys you meet are only that on the birth certificate and actually go by a shortened version.

ParisJeTAime · 11/01/2021 20:11

I know one who is around 5. That's it and I have young dcs, so know a lot of small ones!

DonttouchthatLarry · 11/01/2021 20:15

Angel & Dick Strawbridge of 'Escape to the Chateau' have a Dorothy. Think I prefer Dorothea though. Our old neighbour was a 'Dot' but my DH
always referred to her as Spot Grin.

joystir59 · 11/01/2021 20:15

I'm 63 and don't know anyone in real.life called Dorothy and think it's a lovely name

JustanotherTuesday · 11/01/2021 20:16

The only two Dorothy's I knew would be over 100 years old now if they were still alive. One always used her full name and the other one went by Dolly.
I'm sorry but it still seems extremely old fashioned to me.

Marmite27 · 11/01/2021 20:16

My 5 year old has two friends who are named Dorothy.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/01/2021 20:16

Oh sorry, scratch that - Dorothy hasn't been popular enough in the last few years that you'd be able to check it on ONS! I don't know any young ones personally (the ones I know are 65/70 plus), but looking at the very rapid recent popularity rise, the statistics suggest Dorothy could likely reach the top 100 in 4/5 years time (if that answers your question?).

Marmite27 · 11/01/2021 20:16

Both also 5y/o.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/01/2021 20:19

Love this show but hate hearing Angela saying Dowafy.

YerAWizardHarry · 11/01/2021 20:22

It'll vary greatly by region. I live in the North of Scotland and have never met a child called Dorothy.

StealthRoast · 11/01/2021 20:22

I think it’s horribly old fashioned if only sticking to the full name. Dotty is really cute though. Don’t know any at all of any age.

ZebraKid71 · 11/01/2021 20:22

It is fairly popular round here, I personally know a 7 yo, a 5 yo and two toddlers. I don't really like the full name but love Dotty

Sexnotgender · 11/01/2021 20:26

I know a Dorothy, she’s in her 90s and absolutely fabulous.

Firebird83 · 11/01/2021 21:26

I really like it. I don’t think it will be overly popular like Olivia, Isla, Ava etc are.

sleepingfox · 11/01/2021 22:36

I know a 25 year old Dorothy and a 6 month old Dorothy. I think it’ll start being used more, but I’m not sure it will end up being super popular.
