Would you pronounce these the same?

Would you pronounce Lila and Lyla the same? Thinking of this name for our DD. I prefer spelling it with an I, he prefers Y and said he'd pronounce my spelling Leela. I don't want a name that'll constantly be mispronounced as I've had with my own name my whole life but I much prefer the I spelling. Any thoughts?

Lila = Leela

Lyla = Lie-la

SacreBleeeurgh · 10/01/2021 23:35

I’d pronounce them the same instinctively, but also wouldn’t be surprised if someone corrected me to ‘leela’ if it was spelt Lila (helpful.... sorry!!)

I think both spellings are nice.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2021 23:36

@lovablequalities

Lila = Leela

Lyla = Lie-la

This
meditrina · 10/01/2021 23:37

I would pronounce them the same (in Asia the chocolate bar Lila Pause is pronounced Lyla Pause - don't know if it's the same in Germany where I think it originated)

CrochetOrBust · 10/01/2021 23:38

I’d pronounce them both as Lie-la unless told otherwise

Vitaminsss · 10/01/2021 23:38

First instinct was leela - your pronunciation does makes sense but is an afterthought. She will definitely run into pronunciation errors.

PaigeMatthews · 10/01/2021 23:38

I agree with your husband.

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/01/2021 23:39

Lila=Lie-la

Lyla=Lie-la

Exactly the same thing, but I prefer the Lila spelling.

TitilatedOcelot · 10/01/2021 23:40

I'd pronounce them both Lie-la.

Lila in German and probably other languages is Lee-la though.

I prefer Lila, Lyla might get confused with Lyra.

BaronessBomburst · 10/01/2021 23:40

Lila = Leela
Lyla = Lie-la

Yes! This is how I would pronounce them. Two different names.

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/01/2021 23:41

How does anyone get Lee-la from Lila ? Confused

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 10/01/2021 23:41

Lila is Lee-la

SimplyRadishing · 10/01/2021 23:41

@AfterSchoolWorry

Lila=Lie-la

Lyla=Lie-la

Exactly the same thing, but I prefer the Lila spelling.

100% agree with this
AfterSchoolWorry · 10/01/2021 23:42

Letter i is pronounced eye, not eee

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 10/01/2021 23:42

Like

Mila is Mee-la

Fila is Fee-la

Jamila is Jam-ee-la

stickygotstuck · 10/01/2021 23:43

@lovablequalities

Lila = Leela

Lyla = Lie-la

Agree
RaininSummer · 10/01/2021 23:43

The same for me. Don't see Leela at all.

Jasharps · 10/01/2021 23:44

Lila is Lie-la to me too. DD1 best friend is Lila and I've never heard anyone call her Leela it's Lie-la

Chilver · 10/01/2021 23:44

How on earth is Lila pronounced Leela?? Both pronounced Lie-la! I prefer Lila; Lyla to me is trying to do a standard name with 'yoonique' spelling.

Jasharps · 10/01/2021 23:45

But just to add to the confusion - DD2's best friend is Mila and she is Meela Hmm

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 10/01/2021 23:46

@Jasharps to be fair if you know her because you've been introduced in a school setting you wouldn't be there in the situations it could be mispronounced through reading it.

If I was sent an email from a Lila I'd pronounce it Lee-la. (I know a Lila)

If someone said "this is Lila" whilst pronouncing it Lie-la I'd call her that. I'd probably spell her name wrong in a Christmas card though and write Lyla.

Trisolaris · 10/01/2021 23:46

Both the same to me

sleepingfox · 10/01/2021 23:49

I’d pronounce them both as Lie-la

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/01/2021 23:49

I'd pronounce them both as "Lie -la", but I much prefer the Lilah or Lila spelling. Lyla looks quite trendy/invented- a la Myla and Kyla.

RavingAnnie · 10/01/2021 23:51

I'd pronounce them the same.
