Would you pronounce these the same?

Would you pronounce Lila and Lyla the same? Thinking of this name for our DD. I prefer spelling it with an I, he prefers Y and said he'd pronounce my spelling Leela. I don't want a name that'll constantly be mispronounced as I've had with my own name my whole life but I much prefer the I spelling. Any thoughts?

I’d pronounce them the same, Lie-la. I’ve also seen it spelt Lilah.

2pinkginsplease · 10/01/2021 23:56

I would pronounce them Lila Lee-la and Lyla Lie-la. I prefer the Y in the name.

Those asking where do you get the ee sound from I. Fila is pronounced Fee-la . Mila is Mee-la

omg35 · 10/01/2021 23:57

Thanks everyone! Should have put this in AIBU to enable voting 😂

I would had assumed they were both pronounced Lie-la.

What about Lilah (like Delilah?). I like that spelling.

Or another way of spelling it is Leila.

Tbh I’d just spell it how you prefer and people will get it. My DD has a rare European name which is said exactly as it is spelled. It is completely unambiguous. Yet people still don’t always know how to pronounce it. After being told once they don’t forget. It’s not a big deal.

@Chilver

How on earth is Lila pronounced Leela?? Both pronounced Lie-la! I prefer Lila; Lyla to me is trying to do a standard name with 'yoonique' spelling.
I don’t know anyone called Lila/Lyla. I grew up knowing of the actress Mila Kunis, which is pronounced as “meela”. I know a lot of people called Mia in real life, the majority are pronounced “me-a” rather than “my-a.” (The girl that uses the latter pronunciation is Indian.) That’s probably why Lila reads as “leela” to me as it’s more familiar
Schlobbob · 10/01/2021 23:57

Lila means purple in German and is pronounced Lee-la, both i and ie have the longer eee sound

For the 'eye' sound it would be spelt Leila

I think you're going to have trouble with the pronunciation whichever way you go OP, sorry 😞 blame the English language

ktp100 · 10/01/2021 23:59

My worry with the Lila spelling would be that people might shorten it to Lil (pronounced Lil as in rhymes with hill) and I don't like Lil or Lillian etc.

I do think Lyla is a more sensible option and definitely less confusing in the desired pronunciation sense.

Vitaminsss · 10/01/2021 23:59

^ yep, like a PP Lila rhymes with Fila

BeesAnkles · 11/01/2021 00:01

Those who can't understand how Lila could be pronounced "lee-la", how do you pronounce Lina??

Fwiw, I'm 50/50 about how I'd pronounce it.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 11/01/2021 00:03

Leena

Pauline is Paul-een

Christine is Christ-een

I'm finding it difficult to believe the PPs that can't possibly see how it could be ee have never heard of a Christine before

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 11/01/2021 00:04

"Or another way of spelling it is Leila."

I know one of these too - she's Lay-la Grin

partyatthepalace · 11/01/2021 00:06

Someone posted thus recently and got a massive variety of I’d say it Lilla, Leela and Lyla answers

I think Lila is most likely going to be pronounced Lilla but could be Leela

Lyla most likely Lyela

Personally I think the Lila Mia type names are all a bit nothingy and this only adds to it, so if you aren’t set I’d find something else.

Yep, I'd pronounce Leila "lay-la" too!
whoamongstus · 11/01/2021 00:07

My great aunt was Lila, pronounced Lill-ah/Liller, like Lily, so I'd pronounce it like that - sorry! But I think that's fairly unusual.

I love both spellings though, and wouldn't be surprised to hear it pronounced as you'd like with the Lila spelling ☺️

Cattenberg · 11/01/2021 00:14

I posted my name shortlist on here. Lila was on it! I was surprised when one or two people said it sounded like “lilo”. I’d assumed that everyone pronounced it “Leela”, but clearly not.

BikeRunSki · 11/01/2021 00:19

@CrochetOrBust

I’d pronounce them both as Lie-la unless told otherwise
Me too

My friends DD is Lilla but said like your great aunt (Lill-ah)
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/01/2021 00:40

For everyone asking how do you get Lee-la from Lila, I would suggest Lisa as an explanation. The usual English is Lee-sa.
Lyla is most likely to get you Lie-la.

BackforGood · 11/01/2021 00:42

If I saw Lyla written down, I'd say "Lie-la"

If I saw Lila written down, I'd ask 'how do you say your name'?

mintich · 11/01/2021 00:47

Both pronounced Lie-la

RubixCubix · 11/01/2021 00:59

And have never met a Lisa before either. Unless they have been calling them Lie-sa all this time!
GeorgiaGirl52 · 11/01/2021 01:01

Lila = Li-la

Lilac = Li-lack

Lyla = Li-la

Leela=Lee-la

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 11/01/2021 01:03

@GeorgiaGirl52

How do you pronounce Lisa?

DahliaMacNamara · 11/01/2021 01:05

I don't think there's any mileage in looking for consistency in English pronunciations. If I didn't know, I would ask. I've been caught out by various Leilas and Lizas a few times now. Never assume anything.

Estreladebelem · 11/01/2021 01:06

Had the exact same discussion with DH when DD was born. I prefer the Lee-la pronunciation, and associate the Lyla spelling with Lie-la because of the oasis song. DH thinks they would both be pronounced Lie-la, and suggested Leela, like the girl in Futurama. DD ended up being none of them Grin
