Estrid

Recently came across this variant of Astrid. As a fan of E-names and liking Astrid despite the ass- sound at the start but ultimately unwilling to use because of that, I think I much prefer this version. Thoughts?

I love Astrid. Estrid looks like a misspelling and she will spend her life correcting. Plus the sound isn’t as pretty to me. The ass sound in Astrid would never have occurred to me. I know an Astrid.

I don’t think I would’ve liked it if it was a modern variant, but I came across it when researching Norse history for a book. It may even be the original! However, I agree that despite provenance Astrid is the version best known now, so this variant may appear as an off the wall modern take even though it’s not, with the problems around correcting etc as you say.

I agree with the previous poster I would assume it was a typo of Astrid. I think she would get that reaction constantly ans it would quickly become incredibly frustrating.

Edenember · 08/01/2021 09:55

I think you’re probably right. Maybe more of a middle.

For some reason Estrid feels a bit... medical?

BoomyBooms · 08/01/2021 09:58

Wow I absolutely love it. Definitely getting Norse/Viking vibes.

Edenember · 08/01/2021 09:58

Ha. I’d never considered that... but I’ve probably got that association now 😂.

Yes I love Norse names. I also love Eerika but that’s probably too much 😂

There’s nothing wrong w it but she’ll spend her life correcting people.

Astrid is a lovely name.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/01/2021 10:01

Made me think of oestrogen.
Much prefer Astrid.

ShalomToYouJackie · 08/01/2021 10:05

I've got DD1 on the way and we are calling her Freyja and are still choosing between Astrid or Estrid for a middle name.

I am leaning towards Astrid more, I think otherwise she'll be correcting people a lot. Also it appears everyone I follower on Instagram has been promoting some new razor called Estrid which has ruined the name a bit for me!

LarryUnderwood · 08/01/2021 10:07

Estrid sounds like a hormone prescription to me. Astrid or Ester/Esther I would say.

ShalomToYouJackie · 08/01/2021 10:07

Although DP is a big fan of The US Office and likes to always refer to the scene where Jans baby is called Astrid and Michael calls her ass-turd 🙄

Edenember · 08/01/2021 10:08

Oh I didn’t know that re the razor. Freyja is lovely, I would go with this spelling too rather than the anglicised. I don’t think you need to worry about misspellings corrections for a middle though, most people don’t know they’re there. Nobody knows my daughters middle name except doctors and teachers, and I wish they did because I love it. However Astrid is beautiful too I just can’t get over the start. Again doesn’t matter so much for a middle.

Not for a middle name. Nobody will be interested. So go with the one you like.

LittleGwyneth · 08/01/2021 11:01

Estrid sounds like Astrid with a South African accent to me. Love Astrid though.

Yeah, hate it when names become brands and spoil it for you. There are some names which have managed to transcend it such as Flora but it takes years for people to ‘rise above’ the association.

Astrid is lovely and doesn't look or sound like 'ass' because you move on to the 'tr' too quickly. It makes me think of stars; astral things.

Estrid looks and sounds like a cross between Astrid and Esther. It makes me think of Oestrous and its connections with Easter. If you're going for that, I'd suggest Ostara sounds nicer.

Estrid does sound more medical, or like a South African pronunciation of Astrid.

Edenember · 08/01/2021 13:13

I see what you mean, however I also have the astral / stellar association from the Est- start from names like Estelle and Esther.

It sounds like part of a sewage plant or something

tuttifuckinfruity · 08/01/2021 13:32

Sounds like a character on The Crown saying Astrid.

Estrid and Endrew.

MaggieFS · 08/01/2021 13:38

Sounds like HRT.

Looks like a typo of Astrid.

I have never ever made the ass link to Astrid, but if that's in your head then you probably won't be able to get away from it. Back to the drawing board!

Firebird83 · 08/01/2021 13:40

Sounds like Astrid in a posh accent.
