I've loved the name Elsa for a a very long time. It ticks a lot of boxes for me: familiar without being overly popular, and no issues with spelling and pronunciation. But then Frozen was released.

So is the Frozen reference still too overwhelming seven years later? I don't have small children so I'm a bit out of the loop as to whether Frozen is a bit passé now.

Would using Elisabeth with Elsa as a diminutive work - giving options to revert to one of the many non-Frozen nicknames or the full name if she grows up not to love ice queens? (I'm not usually a fan of working backwards to make a nickname work but I like both Elsa and Elisabeth)

Frozen is still very much a thing. Frozen 2 only came out recently and frozen stuff is everywhere. Depends how much it bothers you but people will make the frozen connection.

Frozen 2 only came out in 2019, sorry but I really don't think the association is going anywhere yet.

Your daughter might love to share her name with A disney protagonist but equally she may get incredibly tired of the association. As it's a unkown roll of the dice I probably would err on the side of caution and not use it.

I know a lady who has called her baby girl Elsa think she chose it as her 4 year old loves frozen. Depends if the frozen connection bothers you? Frozen 2 came out last November so it's been 14 months.
As it's a Disney film I'd have thought Frozen will be remembered for a long time.

That said...is it that much of an issue for you? Elsa is a traditional name. If you'd had your heart set on Simba before the Lion King came out, I'd be saying don't use it. Elsa...well, she might have a few Let It Go jokes, but perhaps you can live with that.

I like the idea of Elisabeth with Elsa as a nn. If the Frozen references become unbearable, you have a back-up. Plenty of other nicknames for Elisabeth as well if necessary.

Another thought: you could steer clear if Elsa, give your child a different name entirely, and then that name could suddenly become the name of a celebrity or something else. I just read the thread on girls called Alexa, for instance.

At least with Elsa you know what you're in for...

Frozen will be here for a long time but I think that Elsa is a traditional enough name (particularly in other parts of Europe) that if it were my fave name, I don't think I would let Frozen/Frozen 2 stop me from using it personally. It's not an uncommon name like Merida or Ariel.

But yes, the very classic Elisabeth is a great way to get the nn Elsa. Plus Elisabeth is one of those "can't go wrong" names as it is so timeless with dozens of nn choices (so although she may have to get used to saying "Elisabeth with an S", it's still a safer choice over Elsa for the BC).

I prefer Ailsa.

It’s kind of like saying, ‘If I call my daughter Mulan or Ariel will people make the connection with the Disney Princess?’ And the answer is yes.

I know someone who called their daughter Elsa at the height of frozen mainly because they liked the names Isla and Elsie so it’s a combination of these but I don’t think she gets frozen mentioned to her

Elizabeth nn Elsa is a good idea. She can chop and change her name as much as she wants, so many nn's for Elizabeth!

It might be ok, but I only opened this thread to find out if you were deliberately considering a Disney themed name, so maybe not.

I'm Ailsa and apart for people being able to spell the Elsa version now which is an improvement of the many misspellings I have had over the year and my daughter loving the fact I had the same name not noticed much difference.
Not met that many Ailsa/Elsa's in real life so don't think it is getting massively popular but yes people will probably associate it with frozen now but maybe not so much in 10 years time.

Elsa and Frozen is like Aurora and Sleeping Beauty and that came out in the 1950s.

Frozen is not a bad association unless her sister is Anna

Elsa is fine. It’s a nice name, and has been well established for many years. It’s not a “Disney Princess” type of name.
