I like it! Usually spelled "Céline" (AFAIK), but I think either spelling is quite classic & dignified.

Meant to add, possible pronunciation problems. It has three syllables, I think - with the final -e pronounced like other Greek names. Penelope, Hermione etc.

Selene is a perfectly acceptable spelling. I also agree with @daisypond that it should technically have three syllables, but pronounced with two syllables it's still fine.

It's a beautiful, elegant name, as is Celeste. I slightly prefer Celeste actually.

Obvioulsy times change, but currently, I can only imagine the constant comparison:

' My name Selene, like Celine Dion, but spelt strangely!'

If you must use it, please spell it the more common way. I'd personally avoid it due to the association with the singer though and go with something slightly different.

Three syllables. It’s more similar to Selena than Celine, both foreign variants of the Greek.

Celéne and Selene are not the same name.

As pp said, Selene is the name of the Moon Goddess, it basically means Moon.

And it is pronounced Seh-lEh-neh.

It's beautiful OP. If it's the meaning you like, you can simplify things by going with Luna. Also beautiful. Just a thought.

Celeste is okay (although I think of the fictional elephant) but I much prefer Selene. It's gorgeous - such a soft, feminine, elegant name but with a feminist kick thanks to the Moon Goddess links; I'm not sure why it isn't more popular?

Using the Latin (Selena) or French (Celine) varients loses the name some of it's original charm imo. Yes in ancient Greece they would likely have pronounced the name more like "Seh - lehn -eh" , but I think most people would assume/use the "Seh - leen" pronunciation now (I think both are equally nice).

It's a name with a lot of history - Cleopatra's daughter with Marc Anthony was named Selene after the moon Goddess.

If you want a heavenly/moon themed name then another choice is the classy Celia (which also has lovely Shakespearean links).

I prefer Celeste.
I don't dislike Selene (which I would pronounce Sel - EE - nee) but I think it will be a lifetime of people pronouncing it like Celine.
(And I don't even know if my pronunciation is correct!)

As pps have said, Selene is Greek for moon, or the goddess of the moon. Céline is from the Roman family name Caelinus, and has no connection to it.

It’s a lovely name, I also love Serena and Sybil (Cybille?) I prefer the Celine spelling though. Celeste is nice also.
