Disagreement over baby boy name!

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 28/12/2020 14:03

My family all have quite unusual names whereas my partners family are all very religious and have classic (what I call boring names).

The only names we both agree on are Freddie and Theo, both of which I think are becoming increasingly popular (I have multiple friends with the same names).

We both liked Zach and Hugo however close friends got there before us.

We also liked Seth, not used much round here nowadays and is very historical in his family and also a bible name but we just aren’t 100%.

We both quite like the name Henry but I can’t help but feel it’s ‘boring’. I loved my name growing up and because of it no one ever forgot me. It was super helpful when applying for jobs and having interviews as it helped me stand amount amongst a large crowd.

Any suggestions? We still have 5 months to decide thankfully!!!

(Middle name will be Alexander)

You sound very defensive! I think PP was asking if DH and if the baby was having his surname, not as an attack but to point out of the baby got both his surname and middle name choice (of a name you don’t even like) that you should have more say over first name rather than choosing a name neither of you are fussed about.

Being fair, I don’t think you can say of any name, that’s the one, until you match it with an actual person/baby.

Seth was statistically more popular last year than Peter, Mark, Nicolas, or Frank.

If you’d like an unusual name why not look on the stats and search outside of the top 1000? You might be surprised at what is actually unusual. I was when I first looked (eg Jeffery, Harold, Carl, Edgar, Conrad, Darren, all outside the top 1000)

Antonin · 29/12/2020 16:54

If you like Seth how about Heath?
Definitely not common. I’ve known only one and he’d be inis 30s now.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 29/12/2020 16:54

Ephraim Alexander

Ohyessiricanboogie20 · 29/12/2020 16:56

I love Zakhi not sure if thats too similar to Zach. I also wouldnt worry other peoples names. DHs friends have daughters called Ellie and Ella. I also like Zander but then noticed the middle name.

ChanklyBore · 29/12/2020 16:56

On that note I’d like to suggest

Emile, Jerome, Basil, Blaise, Eugene.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/12/2020 18:20

Ezekiel is an Old Testament name. So is Ezra. You would not be appropriating black culture by choosing either of those names.

FWIW, I know a white, non-Jewish Ezra.

CeibaTree · 29/12/2020 18:22

If I were naming a baby boy tomorrow I’d go for one of: Jasper, Felix, Otto, Rowan, Bodhi, Silas or Ivor. I do love the name Seth too :)

I like Freddie and Hugo. Don’t mind your friends, it’s a name. They don’t own it.

@blueleonburger it’s my sister not my friend so I can’t use Hugo. We both feel Freddie is becoming too popular now so I think we’ll go with Seth or maybe Walt as a backup.

I love the name Seth

SnoozyBoozy · 30/12/2020 10:47

What about Xavier, Zav for short? Not dissimilar to Zach, but a different name at least?

YoniAndGuy · 30/12/2020 10:50

Well you're her sister too. Why does she get first dibs on Hugo just because she says so? Because she's the one prepared to have a tantrum over it?

It's the luck of who gets pregnant first/has a boy first surely?

She has no more right to the name than you if you like it just as much. It doesn't belong to her just because she said so!

fastwigglylines · 30/12/2020 10:58

I don't understand this attitude on MN.

I mean yes, technically this true. But if your own sister has asked you not to use one name, why on earth would you use it when there's a world of names out there to choose from?

First dibs goes to the person who's mentioned it first, not the person who has a baby first.

Why on earth would you advise the OP to do something that would cause such upset with a member of her family?

Thankfully the OP seems to have her head screwed on!

Mangerfield · 30/12/2020 11:05

Zeke Kinski on Neighbours wasn't black... and I know several caucasian Ezras.

Raphael /raffi is great.
Abraham is unusual yet biblical, I'm really warming to it!

Chilldonaldchill · 30/12/2020 11:23

Seth is great.
I also like Jonas and Lucien and Caspian which feel like strong names which are unusual but not unheard of.

rainbowstardrops · 30/12/2020 11:48

I really like

Xavier Alexander

Isaac Alexander

Otto Alexander

Jude Alexander

I'm not so keen on Seth or old bible names personally but we're all different!
Oh and I know of a white 11 year old boy called Ezra. Really suits him.

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 30/12/2020 12:09

@fastwigglylines exactly, I’m not going to cause ww3 with my family over a name. She can have it and if she doesn’t have a boy I’ll call my next dog Hugo Grin

I love Abraham and it’s also in my family tree and I could have Abe for short.

I’ll shortlist: Seth, Abraham, Ezra, Walt and Tate (I love this but not sure OH will!)

Love Seth!

I know a religious family who have an Emmanuel and call him Mani for short, he seems a very confident 3 year old! Also a local 5 year old is Morris which suits him too. Don't know of any others of either name around.
