Disagreement over baby boy name!

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 28/12/2020 14:03

My family all have quite unusual names whereas my partners family are all very religious and have classic (what I call boring names).

The only names we both agree on are Freddie and Theo, both of which I think are becoming increasingly popular (I have multiple friends with the same names).

We both liked Zach and Hugo however close friends got there before us.

We also liked Seth, not used much round here nowadays and is very historical in his family and also a bible name but we just aren’t 100%.

We both quite like the name Henry but I can’t help but feel it’s ‘boring’. I loved my name growing up and because of it no one ever forgot me. It was super helpful when applying for jobs and having interviews as it helped me stand amount amongst a large crowd.

Any suggestions? We still have 5 months to decide thankfully!!!

(Middle name will be Alexander)

Boys names are hard!
Seth is very cool, I'll be suggesting to my sister for her twins, one will be Alexander and they are stuck for boy 2! She likes traditional names.
I keep suggesting Max or Samuel.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 28/12/2020 18:07

I think boys' names are hard too. How about Gideon or Conrad?

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 28/12/2020 19:08

Alexander is my partners name hence the middle name (I don’t like it but he does obviously).

I love Ezekiel and thought Zeke for short was cool AND it’s his favourite NFL player but my partner says it’s a ‘black name’. Same for Ezra.

If I went for Hugo my sister would never talk to me again as it’s the name she wants for a boy and I don’t mean like she’d get over it I mean she would never speak to me again.

I do like Otto and Sebastian but just nothing yet makes me go THAT’S THE ONE!

I like previous suggestions of Max and Sam. (For the record I love Hugo and Zack). You could go a bit left of centre, but still old school, with Walt, Clancy, Raf, Xavier.

If you like Elias then Matthias has a similar sound and ticks the biblical and not that common boxes. But if you like a name just go for it, who cares if it is popular?

KeeefBurtain · 28/12/2020 22:52

Seth is a great name!

I like Asher too.

Veterinari · 28/12/2020 23:00

I love Ezekiel and thought Zeke for short was cool AND it’s his favourite NFL player but my partner says it’s a ‘black name’. Same for Ezra.
I think the bigger issue is that your partner is showing signs of racial stereotyping and appears not to be terribly bright.

What does he mean by 'black' names and why is that a problem?
Does he think the folk in the bible were all white British?

He seems happy enough to use middle-eastern/Jewish names rather than Anglo Saxon ones, so why is he picking out some of these names as representing black communities when they're clearly biblical? Confused

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 28/12/2020 23:20

@Veterinari I agree with you. He sees those names as being more popular amongst black people which they may well be, and he associates Ezekiel with his favourite NFL player who is black. I don’t think he means it in a racial stereotyping way it’s just the only people he knows with those names are black and he feels as though he would be wrong to use them for a white child. He sees it way more as cultural appropriation than anything racial.

I do love the name Ezekiel so will push it again and see.

I love Clarence, Walt, Wilf, Humphrey too. Amos I like but it’s my boss’ name as is Nico annoyingly!

Is your sister pregnant or already has a Hugo?

Elias sounds different enough to Ellis.

If he gets to insist on Alexander then I don’t see why you shouldn’t have the final say on the first name tbh!

jellybe · 28/12/2020 23:32

What about Eli?

Love Seth and goes great with Alexander.

Partner, not husband?

Is the baby going to have his surname?

If so, the first name is your choice.

Especially as he also seems to be getting the baby names after him as a middle name which you don't even like!!!!!

YOU choose the first name!

missyB1 · 29/12/2020 12:27

If you like Hugo what about Hugh? It’s much less common. Or;

Joel
Francis
Jonah
Noah
Emmett

EileenGC · 29/12/2020 12:33

How about Micah? It's definitely not popular and has a similar feel to some of your other names.

Matthias
David
Lucas/Luke

Twobecomingthreeplusthedog · 29/12/2020 13:19

@YoniAndGuy not really sure why it’s relevant he’s my partner and not my husband. Our wedding was cancelled due to covid...

We have both taken each other’s surnames so have double barrel and so will the baby.

I honestly don’t care about middle name, it never gets used and is completely pointless in my mind so I couldn’t care less that he chose that and I’m not going to play tit for tat that I get to pick the first name because of it. It’s his son too.

@missyb1 I like Hugh however my sister who has shot gun Hugo is due 4 weeks after me (don’t know yet if she’s even having a boy) and calling mine Hugh would cause WW3. Especially as I’d never call it Hugh and call it Hugo.

I think your ideas of Clarence and Walt are great. I feel like Walt is due a comeback - it has adventurous and creative associations for me. Though that's probably due to Walter Bonatti and Walt Whitman.
