I'm stuck between Etta and Maeve for a first name. Just after initial reactions because I can't decide, thank you!

@Jay87 Hope she has a great birthday party. I'm curious which name did you go with?

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/01/2022 16:10

I don't like either of them. Etta is by far the est of the two but might be tricky because it sounds like 'Ate a'

Edenember · 10/01/2022 17:59

I prefer Etta on paper (it’s on my list), but like both. However, where I’m from the glottal stop comes as standard so I think that would ultimately put me off Etta as a first name. If this isn’t an issue for you, Etta Maeve is lovely and would be what I’d go with.

LozMarieFielder · 10/01/2022 18:01

I quite like Maeve but Etta is fresh and unique.

Weredone · 10/01/2022 19:00

Definitely Maeve. Etta sounds too bitty/like an acronym for something.

GloriousGoosebumps · 10/01/2022 19:27

I love Etta, it reminds me of the jazz singer and her music. As for the pronounciation, your daughter's friends will pronounce it the way she pronouces it.

Heh1991 · 11/01/2022 00:38

Love them before and adore Etta Maeve as a first/middle name convo!

Etta is more unusual and gorgeous would suit baby, middle aged woman or elderly late! Go for it xxx

autumnkate · 11/01/2022 21:34

Etta sounds like a sneeze.

Maeve is sooo much better.

wingsofabird · 11/01/2022 21:41

@Jay87 haha no problem but you have to update us!! Did you go with Maeve, Etta or something else?!

piney07 · 11/01/2022 21:59

I think Etta is nice but agree with PP that it’s a nn for Henrietta I would think? Maeve just makes me think of the comedian Maeve Higgins. But it’s nice too.

Jay87 · 11/01/2022 22:19

@wingsofabird @strawberrymilk7
I love that people are still answering this question and she's 9 months old 😄

We called her Etta Arianne and I'm so so so glad we did! Etta was a name I was completely in love with but had Maeve niggling at the back of my mind.

Thank you for all your comments, especially the sneeze one, that made me laugh 😁

Omg 😳 apologies I didn’t realise this was an old post. I am sure that your DD suits her name. To be honest I wasn’t keen on the name my sister picked for my niece before she was born but once she arrived I loved it and it suits her.
Jay87 · 12/01/2022 06:19

@pinkksugarmouse haha don't worry, not everyone likes the same names. I find it interesting the different opinions people have of one name and the associations they have with it. You're right, when the name becomes reality and suits a child you have a different opinion of it. I think you've just got to go with the one you love and other people get used to it 🙂

Etta is horrible. Really hard sounding.

Maeve is okay but it's getting very over-popular already.

SeeMyLanyardAndWeepBitch · 12/01/2022 06:29

oh sorry, zombie thread.

garlictwist · 12/01/2022 07:06

Etta sounds a bit made up. I really like Maeve.

piney07 · 12/01/2022 11:26

Omg everyone baby Etta is named! She is 9 months old now and has a beautiful name x

ShowOfHands · 12/01/2022 11:36

Aww I'm glad you went with Etta.

To answer the birthday question, when DD was 5, we went to a lot of bouncy castle, themed, entertainer type parties and they were good. However, we went with an old fashioned jelly and ice-cream type party with musical bumps and pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey etc and it was absolutely brilliant. Lots of parents said afterwards that it was just good fun and such a trip down memory lane. DD remembers it as her best party ever.
