I've considered every girls name under the sun but so confused then this one popped into my head. What are your thoughts on this name. Does it go with brother William?

Love it, I think it goes nicely with William too

VenusClapTrap · 30/11/2020 08:13

Lovely

MimiDaisy11 · 30/11/2020 09:28

It's a nice name and not too popular in the UK.

August20 · 30/11/2020 09:34

I love it.

Think it goes fine with William too.

Curlylocks5 · 30/11/2020 10:49

Beautiful
If you have any particular connection to the ocean the meaning is great too;
Drop of the sea / star of the ocean 🌊

IndieRo · 30/11/2020 11:03

Beautiful name.

MikeUniformMike · 30/11/2020 11:17

EbbaDay · 30/11/2020 13:58

Really like it

Fifthtimelucky · 30/11/2020 16:38

I think it goes fine with William.

My only issue with it is that some people may pronounce it differently from you and you may find that annoying.

Ma REE uh is much more common these days, I think, but Ma RYE uh is the more traditional English way.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/11/2020 18:12

Lovely and very classic - it's only occasionally been out of the E and W top 100 since the 1900's, yet it doesn't feel overused. Most of the Maria's I know are non-UK born, so I think it's quite popular internationally though.

I don't think pronunciation is an issue these days (although I love the Austenesque "Mah - rye -ah" myself too, but it's rarely used now). May makes a nice nn if you want one.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/11/2020 18:13

Oh, and Maria works well with William (less obvious a pair than William and Mary but still traditional).

Diverseduvet · 30/11/2020 18:15

The Maria's I have known have always great. Lovely name.

JorisBonson · 30/11/2020 18:15

My mum's name so I'm biased 😂

XiCi · 30/11/2020 18:17

Love Maria! DD1 was nearly Maria, you could call her Mia or Mimi :)

Whenwillow · 30/11/2020 18:28

I really like it and it fits well with William.
It's very pretty.

FawnDrench · 30/11/2020 19:14

Maria is a really lovely name and a perfect "fit" with William.

ILoveStickers · 30/11/2020 19:41

I love it, seriously considering using it if I ever have another daughter! Really beautiful, and a Maria could be anything she wanted.

florascotia2 · 30/11/2020 19:57

Maria is a very nice name but it doesn't mean 'drop of the sea/star of the ocean'. as previous poster suggested. It has Hebrew or even Egyptian roots:

'Star of the ocean' is the well known phrase 'Stella Maris'.

Jeschara · 30/11/2020 20:08

Love it, I am biased though its my daughters middle name. Goes well with William.
It is a very popular name in Hispanic countries.

june2007 · 30/11/2020 20:14

I know a Maira and a Willem. (not willliam.)

Firebird83 · 02/12/2020 14:15

Beautiful, and goes very well with William.

It’s my name - I love it. It’s never been pronounced wrong either. The only other Maria’s around my age (mid 20s) I’ve came across are either Spanish or Italian. I know of some who are a lot older but I don’t see it as an “old” name.
I remember going out shopping a few years ago and a lady shouted her daughter who was about 5 years old, her name was Maria and I couldn’t help but comment on how I loved that there was a young child with my name. The mum was made up and said she got lots of compliments on it when her child was a baby.

I get called Maz for short, never did as a child though but from about 16 I did. I never minded it just stuck, my mum hates it though!
