We have 3 year old Rufus and I'm expecting another boy next month. Last night we put this shortlist together.
Which of these do you like best and why please?
Edwin
Joseph
Oscar
Emrys (we both have Welsh heritage)
Frederick (to be known as Fred)
Dylan
Leo
They're not in any particular order and no more suggestions please. It was a long and fraught discussion to get to these.

I like Dylan.

mysocalledlife · 28/11/2020 10:01

Fred

CosyQueen · 28/11/2020 10:03

I love Emrys- it’s been on my list for years!

Orphlids · 28/11/2020 10:04

Dylan is my favourite.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 28/11/2020 10:06

My favourite is Joseph but I think Edwin goes better with Rufus.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2020 10:08

Edwin - best one
Joseph - like it
Oscar - not keen
Emrys (we both have Welsh heritage) - it's fine but people might think it's girly
Frederick (to be known as Fred) - not keen
Dylan - dislike
Leo - nice but overused

IckleBear · 28/11/2020 10:45

I love Edwin with Rufus.

Enko · 28/11/2020 11:01

Edwin or Emry are my favourite
Quite like Dylan and Oscar w rufus too

user1493494961 · 28/11/2020 11:04

Dislike Dylan, Emrys and Fred. I would probably choose Joseph or Edwin. Leo and Oscar are OK.

Bubbletrouble43 · 28/11/2020 11:22

Edwin. It has a Welsh feel, goes well with rufus and Ed or Eddy are lovely shortenings in my opinion. Lovely name.

Chilldonaldchill · 28/11/2020 12:16

Rufus is so cool.

Edwin - I really like it and think it sounds good with Rufus.
Joseph - I really like it but think it's a wee bit boring if I'm honest
Oscar - really lovely. Was very popular here (n London) about 15-17 years ago.
Emrys (we both have Welsh heritage) - it's ok. Not my favourite of the Em Welsh names.
Frederick (to be known as Fred) - lovely. Fred is much nicer than Freddie. I would worry that there are quite a lot of Freddies about though
Dylan - don't like. Boring and popular.
Leo - I do like Leo but I love Leon

I think I would probably go for Oscar or Edwin but would 100% go for Leon if that were on the list.

Dawnlassie · 28/11/2020 12:32

Edwin was one of the greatest hurdlers of all time and it shortens nicely too. Thats my vote.

Nell96 · 28/11/2020 12:46

Edwin - not keen, prefer Edward
Joseph - ok, but a bit boring
Oscar - sweet
Emrys (we both have Welsh heritage) - like, but would probably use as a middle name if living in England
Frederick (to be known as Fred) - like
Dylan - like the English pronunciation, but less keen on the Welsh, which I think is more correct
Leo - like, but would use Leonard or Leonardo on BC

So, Frederick, Oscar or Leo, in that order

Chimbleys · 28/11/2020 15:58

Would Edwyn be an acceptable spelling?

OP posts:
Apple222 · 28/11/2020 16:01

Edwin spelt Edwin is my favourite. Suits child and adult.

Ed is nice when shortened too.

AdaColeman · 28/11/2020 16:12

Edwin is my favourite from your list, I wouldn't tamper with the spelling. Is Edwyn an attempt to Welshify the name? I don't think it works well.

I'm not keen on Oscar, Leo or Dylan.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/11/2020 18:26

Emrys is gorgeous -my fave Welsh boys name, so I'd chose that personally!
Dylan would be my second choice - it's a bit popular in Wales but is otherwise lovely.
Frederick is a nice enough classic, but Freddie is quite popular.
Edwin is fine but I prefer the sound of Edward personally.
Joseph is also okay but maybe seems a bit dull when compared to Rufus.
Leo and Oscar are too overused/popular for me.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2020 18:30

@Chimbleys

Would Edwyn be an acceptable spelling?
Only if you want people to think you can't spell.
Chimbleys · 28/11/2020 19:07

@MikeUniformMike my dh's great aunt had a son called Edwyn. She was a Uni lecturer in English Literature but maybe she couldn't spell either.
How judgemental.

You asked.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/11/2020 19:25

I love Edwin - I knew a lovely one when I was a kid.

It was my shortlist but vetoed by DH.

CatteStreet · 28/11/2020 19:27

Emrys gets my vote - lovely name and not overused. Like it the best. Leo's good too and goes well with Rufus. I like Joseph a lot but don't think it fits so well. Not wild about the others.

VenusClapTrap · 28/11/2020 19:32

Leo

Shutupyoutart · 28/11/2020 19:34

I like dylan, Joseph and leo. Frederick is ok, freddie is cute for a little boy.

Ellmau · 28/11/2020 19:41

I think Edwin just looks better than Edwyn.
