Boys name suggestion - help!

Elwynne · 19/11/2020 19:09

We had the name all set but now mil has ruined it after my dp told her what it was, why did you do that DP Hmm? It sounds very petty but she claimed she came up with it first, part of me knows this is a silly reason to abandon a name i previously loved but I cant seem to get over it and i have subconsciously disconnected it from the baby. So i really need your help to find a new name.
He will be brother to Jemima if that helps... and I like the following names so far:
Orlando - big no from DP
Hamish - another big no from DP
Rory
Lucas

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Rory!

Perfect.

Tell your P if he tells MIL this one, you’ll register him as Orlando in the hospital yourself.

By the way - not petty - I’d do the same. A lifetime of ‘Ah, I named him, you know!’ - NO.

IggyAce · 19/11/2020 19:16

I like Rory from your list. I prefer Lucien to Lucas. I suggest:
Rupert
Alastair
Lachlan
Hugo

Nell96 · 19/11/2020 19:26

Orlando - awful
Hamish - not keen
Rory - like a lot
Lucas - ok, but not my taste, prefer Luca

Personally, it wouldn't bother me if my MIL reckoned she'd thought of a name first. Life's too short. If you really love the name, use it. If you've totally gone off it now, here are some alternatives -

Fraser
Rowan
Kieran
Finley / Finn
Dylan
Jude
Felix
Cian
Ewan
Liam
Caleb
Cameron
Harrison

SimoneLeBone · 19/11/2020 19:27

Change your DP. Orlando and Hamish are both brilliant names. Horatio?

Blossomhill4 · 19/11/2020 19:33

I’ve only ever heard of an Orlando once in real life years ago! I’m not keen and I think your baby would have to really suit that name. Not keen on Rory.

I would pick Lucas from your list.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 19/11/2020 19:34

Rafferty
Tobias
Gideon
Flynn
Elliot
Sullivan
Finley
Sidney
Laurence

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/11/2020 19:40

Really like the literary Orlando with Jemima. But if that's a no, then of your other choices - Lucas/Lucian is also nice. You could consider the similiar (to Orlando) Shakespearean Lysander or Ferdinand, or I also like Ivo, Jago or classic Hugh with Jemima.

Macblondie · 19/11/2020 23:08

Rory and Lucas are wonderful names! Star

Enko · 20/11/2020 08:42

What was the name you now dont want to use?

I dont like Rory never got the liking of it Lucas is ok but i feel a bit of a currently inn name ..

What does dh like,

TotalBitch · 20/11/2020 08:49

If you're Scottish or live in Scotland, then Hamish. I love it. Rory is nice too.

Also agree you aren't being petty. I'd do the same! I'd also deliberately choose something I know MIL never would.

(All hypothetical btw, as my MIL is quite cool and would never do this sort of thing. Before anyone says "oh boo hoo another MIL bashing thread waaaah").

Ahem, sorry. Anywho, I don't like Orlando or Lucas (mucus). Of the name already suggested, I like Jude, Felix and Tobias. Strongly dislike Alistair as i knew a very creepy one at school who ended up being caught with images of abuse on his PC as an adult, so it has negative connotations for me, despite me knowing two more who are lovely!

Also love these Scottish, (I think they're scottish anyway - so sorry if not), boy names:

Fergus
Gregor
Struan
Innes
Mac

Chilldonaldchill · 20/11/2020 09:12

Hamish is great.
I don't like Orlando. I like the idea of it but I think most people will assume it's after the place in Florida or Bloom.
Rory is great.
Lucas is a bit dull with Jemima. Lucian/Lucien is better.
Other names I think work:
Hugo
Rufus
Theodore
Rupert
Cassius
Josiah
(Fwiw I also think life is too short. If you loved his name then maybe stick to it?)

Chilldonaldchill · 20/11/2020 09:13

Jude, Felix, Alastair and Tobias would work amazingly as well! (Just seen above posts)

TotalBitch · 20/11/2020 09:15

(Fwiw I also think life is too short. If you loved his name then maybe stick to it?)

But, for me, the fact she's gone right off it means that it isn't the one anymore. For whatever reason. Some names nobody would put me off. I have one in mind for a future currently imaginary dd Blush. Honestly, short of an evil dictator naming a fascist regime the same thing, I would never go off that one.

melisande99 · 20/11/2020 09:16

I don't really get the MIL problem. Agree that life's too short. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

KnowlWay · 20/11/2020 09:16

Love Felix

Spied · 20/11/2020 09:18

Evan
Euan
Aidan
Owen

FairfaxAikman · 20/11/2020 09:30

I love Rory! Would have been a strong contender doe DS had it not been the name of DF's dog!

TotalBitch · 20/11/2020 09:36

But op isn't cutting her nose off to spite her face I don't think? She says she's gone off the name. The reason for that really isn't relevant. If she'd just said she'd been put off the name and not mentioned the MIL nobody would have cared.

FluffyEggsontoast · 20/11/2020 09:41

Jemima is a lovely name and quite unusual

Rory is nice but far more popular and commonly used than Jemima. There's loads of Ro_ style names in the top 100. If I were you I'd pick a name outside the top 100 but maybe that's just me. Hamish would work really well

Angus
Alistair
Tristan
Laurence

melisande99 · 20/11/2020 09:48

@TotalBitch she's been "put off" her own nose, if you like! I suspect this might turn out to be a temporary irritation. I know the feeling of being put off something by the MIL acting like it's her idea. When it's a good idea, I've found it's better to just swallow my pride and go with it.

Anyway, who knows? Maybe a different name would be just as good. (But then the MIL might still say "Well, I wanted him to be called Sebastian..." forever after...)

TotalBitch · 20/11/2020 09:50

😂😂😂 yes, she's been put off her own nose. Leave her be. She might not even change it after giving it some thought, but I can see why she is considering other options. If none measure up, then she'll have her answer.

melisande99 · 20/11/2020 09:55

@TotalBitch agree Smile

LemonsYellow · 20/11/2020 10:30

Marcus
Guy
Hugh
Rupert
Anthony
Robert
David

Elwynne · 20/11/2020 11:17

Thanks everyone these names are great. Please keep them coming if you have any other suggestions Smile

And thanks for the mil support. I really like her as a person, so I do feel a bit petty but for some reason it has just killed the love of the first name Confused. Who knows maybe it will come back round but some of the other suggestions have been really inspiring too.

Do any of you like Milo? Or Rex? Or are they too out there?

OP posts:
TotalBitch · 20/11/2020 11:19

Milo and Rex are both lovely. Totally mainstream these days and not out there imo.
