Which girls and boys names should I avoid due to being too popular?
First time mam so not around children that often.

OP posts:

It is etc short for et cetera, not etc.

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2020 14:42

That out of the way, Congratulations.
Pick a first name that you really like and will still like in 10, 20...50 years' time that sounds good with your surname.

Quercus3 · 13/11/2020 15:57

Maybe it was a typo @MikeUniformMike, like the one you made above.

Not a teacher OP but a close friend is, she says there are a lot of Ava/Evie/Islas and many Olivers. Asked the same question myself recently 🙂

DontFadeAway · 13/11/2020 16:03

I'm a childminder and I've seen lots of Finn, Theo, Roman, Esme, Olivia, Isla xx

NannyR · 13/11/2020 16:05

I would go for what you love and not worry too much about popularity. I look after three children so know the names of their classmates, friends out of school, family members - maybe 70+ kids - there are no Olivias in that group, for all it's a commonly given name, whereas there are some children with much rarer names where there are two in the class. There are Arthurs galore!!
I suppose what I'm saying is, if you discount a name that you love, purely because it's popular and go for something less commonly used, it's no guarantee that they won't be one of several in their peer group.

Whatsyourflava · 13/11/2020 16:08

Have you got a list of the top 100 names @Pops55 as that will show you the names to avoid if popularity is a concern.
Teachers don't see children til they're older so they miss the trends. Far more newborns called names like Arlo and Hunter that were fairly unusual 5+ years ago.
Look at the uk top 100 list from 2019, easy to google

@MikeUniformMike

It is etc short for et cetera, not etc.
If you're going to be picky get your corrections right in the first place!!
TheDetectiveBadge · 13/11/2020 16:20

I'm a teacher but do know a fair few babies/toddlers. Personally, I think Theo, Tom, Mia and Evie/Eve are hugely over used in all ages so would avoid. Amongst babies/toddler, I know more than one with the following names:
Florence
Finn
Bella
Felix
No idea if that's an indication of general trends though.

peaches99 · 13/11/2020 16:23

There are a lot of Ava and Ada's around here.
South east.

CousinLucy · 13/11/2020 16:28

South West here. I'd avoid for popularity:

Evie
Isla
Tilly
Maisie
Grace/Gracie
Ellie
Ruby
Isabel/Isabelle/Isobel/Isabella/Isobella

Oliver
Harry
Sam
Ethan
Joe
Finley/Finlay
Freddie
Jake
Jack

But like someone has already said, it can be quite regional. I'd go for a name outside of the top ten.

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2020 16:29

Oh yeah.
If you look at top 100 names, look for names like Finn, Finley & Finlay, who will probably end up being Finn, or Theo and Theodore, Jake and Jacob, Louis and Louie, not just the name you are planning on using.

R names are hugely popular at the moment, so Roman, Rowan, Reuben, Rory etc seem samey.

ZombieAttack · 13/11/2020 20:09

Ava
Evie
Isla
Millie
Maisie
Amelia
Lily

All with the middle names Rose/Grace/May. Often hyphenated.

Oliver
Finlay
Reuben
Jack
Harry
Charlie
Oscar

SansaSnark · 13/11/2020 20:28

SW here, secondary. Ollie is very overused for boys- I teach 4 in one Y7 class. Also Keiran/Cadan and variations of that. And Jack. Quite a few Finn/Finleys around too.

For girls, I would say Caitlin/Kaitlyn, Jessica/Jess, Masie/Milly/Tilly, Amelia/Mia, Lily.

But I would also say it's probably more important to pick a name you like than worry too much about popularity!

reefedsail · 13/11/2020 20:42

Have the contact list for DS's school, so 300 kids 3-13 in SW.

Notable repetitions:
Harry
Henry
Arthur
William
Noah

Florence
Olivia
Charlotte
Eleanor

Kanaloa · 13/11/2020 20:47

I agree with just picking what you like, even if a name isn’t popular you might end up with multiple children with that name. I once taught a group with two Miley’s - I’ve never met one before or since. If you want to avoid super popular I’d say Lily, Eva/Evie, Poppy, Isla and Amelia for girls, and Jack/Jackson, Henry, Oliver and Theo/Teddy for boys, obviously just in my experience.

LolaSmiles · 13/11/2020 20:49

There's usually two popular trends:

One are popular names that tend to be popular most years such as Oliver, Olivia, Emily, Jack, James, Jacob, Isabelle etc.

Then there's names that are popular for a particular period of time so in the last few years it seems like there's lots of George, Henry, Theo etc for boys and lots of Ava, Evie, Isla etc for girls.

Stringervest · 13/11/2020 21:01

DD's class contains 26 children and there are two boys called Max, two girls called Emily and two called Niamh. None of those are particularly high on the top 100 names, so it's pretty tricky to predict.

doctorhamster · 13/11/2020 21:11

Dd1 often jokes that all of the girls in her school are called Jessica, Milly, Tilly, Ellie or Isabelle Grin

slothtrot · 13/11/2020 21:14

I've seen a lot of Charlie's, Harry's and oscars recently.

Firebird83 · 13/11/2020 21:42

In my DS’s nursery there is more than one child with each of the following names:

Max
Jack
Theo
Ted
Oscar
Arlo
Nathaniel
Finley
Isla
Ava
Evie
Isabelle
Esme

NameChange84 · 13/11/2020 21:48

What you have to remember is that even the most popular names are given to less than one percent of babies. Statistically, there shouldn't be any repeated names in a class etc. But... Weird stuff happens. Like there being 5 boys with the same name out of the top 50name in Early years with my DD... Out of 15.

grafittiartist · 13/11/2020 21:54

My son has always been one of many with his name. Top ten for years and really popular.
I don't care- I still love the name, and it's him.

trotesio · 13/11/2020 21:57

Ottilie
Pippa
Quen
Basil

I get this.

A few years ago when I used to do cover work in different primaries it seemed that every single Yr 1 - 3 class had at least 3 Avas, another 2 or 3 Evies and Yvies plus a couple of Evelyn’s with the odd Eve thrown in for good measure. Then a couple of Isabel/Isobel/Isabellas. It would end up being 15 girls named variations of the same 3 or 4 names. In every school I worked in!

I now teach at universities and it seems every 3rd girl is Amie/Amy/Aimee, Charlotte/Lottie/Charlie or Chloe!

There’s more variation with boys but loads of Jordans, Jacobs, James, Josh, Joey, Jack etc. J names were clearly popular for boys in the early 00s!
