Am I being silly?

A while ago we named our daughter Emily Rose surname. Both my partner and I have always liked the name Emily but we are also aware its been popular for a long time and will mostly likely go to school with other Emilys, my partner picked her middle name and although I think is perfectly fine I have moments of regret, thinking we should of picked something else, I have considered changing it but then think its probably pointless as she will very rarely use her middle name. So my question is.. am I overthinking this or should we change her middle name?

Definitely overthinking it! It’s a beautiful name and as you say middle names are rarely used anyway.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/11/2020 08:46

Overthinking. Emily Rose is a perfectly lovely name.

Whatsyourflava · 11/11/2020 08:58

Could you just add the additional middle name
It's really easy to do

Whatsyourflava · 11/11/2020 08:59

By the way I LOVE the name Emily
Rose is nice too

I'd just add an extra middle name but maybe I'm a bit weird

CeramicGuineaPig · 11/11/2020 09:01

What is it you don’t like about her middle name? The popularity? It is true that Rose is a very popular middle name but it is also a beautiful name. I have the most popular middle name from my generation, every second girl had it, and I am fine with that!

bridgetreilly · 11/11/2020 10:24

You are being silly.

HTH.

Bob557 · 11/11/2020 13:05

Thankyou for your responses, I think its possibly because we've picked a popular first name and popular middle and wish we'd picked something less popular, I doubt I'll do anything about it, perhaps I just needed a bit of reassurance, I just hope she likes her name when she's older.

It's the name of the horror film 'the exorcism of Emily Rose'. I thought that was what you were going to say. Is Rose her middle name? If so nobody will say it in everyday life anyway.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/11/2020 13:09

It's a perfectly nice name op. She won't feel more special because she's Emily Buttercup or Emily Persephone.

Bob557 · 11/11/2020 13:27

@unicornparty my god I did not know this, never heard of it, just done a quick Google search and luckily it was released about 15 years ago so fingers crossed it won't be around in another 15/20 years otherwise she might hate me.

Do you even know that many Emily's @Bob557 because I don't.
There's only around 2,000 babies named Emily in 2019 and the numbers have dropped each and every year for the past 20 years
There was 7,000 babies a year called Emily in 1999/2000 so there's far fewer these days
I think it's a great name, I love it

Just add another additional middle name if Rose doesn't feel special enough to you. Or even just unofficially give her another middle name but don't worry to register it.

Sertchgi123 · 11/11/2020 14:03

Love names @Bob557

inappropriateraspberry · 11/11/2020 14:09

I think it's a lovely name and will actually stand out in a sea of unusual and try hard 'different' Ames.

Bob557 · 11/11/2020 14:19

@FluffyEggsontoast I only know of a couple of adult Emilys, although I'm sure there will be many little Emilys, this is my first child so not around children that often. We knew we wanted a well known fairly classic name that everyone can pronounce and spell and this name ticked all the boxes. I think I may have taken it a bit personally when I read on hear that people think Emily is dull as is Rose as a middle name

Giganticshark · 11/11/2020 14:31

It's such a classic name, I love Emily. I also love Rose. OK so the two together are not 'exciting' but she'll never complain about misspellings or having a barmy name 😂

Marlena1 · 11/11/2020 14:38

Don't read the baby name threads. The people who are into them (I am one) get overinvested and think too much!!! My DDs names are hated and there was a thread recently called "is marlena1 (i.e my name) a chav name"! I just chuckled. Emily Rose is a lovely name. No messing with it!

Squeakerfoot · 11/11/2020 14:39

I meet many more children named Emmi/Emmeline than Emily. But I understand how you feel and it's all very well saying it's silly, it's a nagging feeling that can be very uncomfortable that just comes from a place of love for your child.

I agree that you might feel that you can resolve it by adding a second middle name that feels special to you. It doesn't need to be anything crazy and it doesn't need to go on the birth certificate. It's just an extra little gesture to your child from you.

FluffyEggsontoast · 11/11/2020 14:50

@Bob557 some people will think Emily is boring but many (myself included) absolutely love it

It's the same for all names. Honestly pick another name and have a google, you'll find opinion split on every single name. The "perfect"name does not exist. I promise. Emily Rose is gorgeous. Genuinely would love for that to be my name.

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 15:14

I must concur with a previous poster that the first thing I thought of was the film The Exorcism of Emily Rose 😆
I love horror films though...it’s not exactly a classic

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 15:23

@Squeakerfoot I’m interested in where you live!

Emily was number 5 in 2011with 3974 babies, and 11 last year with 2262.
Emmeline was number 749 in 2011 with 50 a year and is now 300 with 161 a year.

Genuinely interested as I’ve never met an Emmeline and love the name. Wondering if they are all concentrated in one place!

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 15:23

You could add a second middle name of your choice?

Bob557 · 11/11/2020 15:34

@TheNanny23 Yes adding a middle name is definitely something to consider. I hate the thought that there is a horror film with the same name, wish I had known that before. Not sure what you mean by 'its not exactly a classic' do you mean the film or my daughters name?

OP posts:
FluffyEggsontoast · 11/11/2020 16:02

Must mean the film that isn't a classic @Bob557 but I'll wait for poster to confirm
Emily is a complete classic

Emily Rose is gorgeous
I'm wondering if you might have PND to be focusing on this. It's a really lovely name and doesn't sound like you've met many others
Emily has fallen out the top 10 now, it will be outside the top 20 in the next couple of years if you look at the graphs

SingingSands · 11/11/2020 16:37

Don't give the film another thought!

Emily Rose is a really lovely name. I know 2 teenage Emily's who are friends of my daughter, my 22 yr old niece, and a young lawyer I work with who is 30.

Do you think it is time to make peace with the name, and move on?

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 16:52

Hi yes I meant the film is not a classic...it’s unlikely to be one people are keen to watch in decades to come. My DH pointed out people call their kids Rosemary and Damian, he thinks the film is getting old now and isn’t very relevant.
