Alphonse?

I just wondered what the perception was of this name- suggested by my DH. Not pregnant yet though so lots of time- just talking hypothetically.
I don’t mind Alphie as a shortening, although I wouldn’t ever pick ‘Alfie’ on its own. Suppose could also be Al or Alph.
I have loved the nickname Teddy as short for Edward/Edmund/Edgar for over a decade and now we come to actually planning TTC it’s crazy popular dammit.
I’m not bothered about them being the only one in the school with a name but not one of five in the class.

It’s not my last name but it’s quite similar to Jones - so Alphonse Jones.

Oh God no. Sorry OP..it's pretty bad! Also...Alphie will just be spelled wrong. People will assume it's Alfie and your child would have to spell it out all the time.

Teddy or Edward though....gorgeous! Love Edmund too...Edgar nice also.

Sara2000 · 10/11/2020 03:13

Not my taste but each to their own. It will be shortened to 'Fonz' would have thought.

Diorissimo1985 · 10/11/2020 03:14

No no that’s a strange name, please don’t

FortunesFave · 10/11/2020 03:23

Sara or even "Fonzie"!

newpad2020 · 10/11/2020 03:32

Like Al Capone?! Wouldn't recommend OP.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/11/2020 03:36

I think rhyming with 'ponce' would rule it out for me. Sorry.

August20 · 10/11/2020 03:38

I will go against the grain and say I quite like it. It's unusual but established, easy to pronounce, has a range of possible nicknames.

The only thing is I did smile at you liking Edward and Alphonse because those are the names of the two main characters/ brothers in Fullmetal Alchemist. Which might not be a popular series on MN but which is one of the best selling manga series from Japan.

SurreyMumOfOne · 10/11/2020 03:57

I'm not keen

diddlediddle · 10/11/2020 06:12

Alphonse?? My first though was that this was a joke, so I don't think that's a good sign...

fallfallfall · 10/11/2020 06:17

Several in my family tree, circa early 1900. French and Italian connotations. I’ve seen and heard worse.

GlitterGlueGun · 10/11/2020 06:19

Depends where you are in the world and where you will bring up your child. You're posting at 3 am GMT so are you not in the UK?

Greenandcabbagelooking · 10/11/2020 06:30

Isn’t it a type of mango?

CodenameVillanelle · 10/11/2020 06:35

Jeez no
Alphie in the U.K. would be ridiculous

GoldenNCurly · 10/11/2020 06:43

Is he a fan of Full Metal Alchemist?

drumandthebass · 10/11/2020 06:49

It's absolutely awful.

Mamette · 10/11/2020 06:53

My dad has a friend called this, everyone calls him Foncie. In my mind it’s incredibly old fashioned (see also the Fonz as pp said).

Maybe - maybe if you had an Italian surname. But Alphonse Jones.... no.

MockneyReject · 10/11/2020 07:12

I think it's a great name - even more so now that Fonz/Fonzie has been suggested a shortening.
I'm quite old, though, and not at all cool.
My first thought was 'spiv' Actually, that could work as a nickname. Spivvy. Little Spiv.

midsomermurderess · 10/11/2020 14:27

In Belgium or France, yes fill your boots. In the U.K., I think it's verging on the comical.

Changethetoner · 10/11/2020 14:30

It's foreign. I mean it is not a traditional English name. Is there any particular reason to choose a Italian(?) name.

1940s · 10/11/2020 14:43

My friends cat is called this and goes by Fonsy/ Fonz

happylittlechick · 10/11/2020 15:28

Stirbacker anyone???

merryhouse · 10/11/2020 15:48

Only if you're french.

Disappointedkoala · 10/11/2020 16:30

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I think rhyming with 'ponce' would rule it out for me. Sorry.
There's a worse rhyming option than that too....

Bit too Al Capone for me.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/11/2020 17:59

There's a worse rhyming option than that too....

Yes, I was thinking that as well....

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/11/2020 20:10

@Disappointedkoala
@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Well it clearly passed me by - I guess I'm just too innocent...Confused

I can't imagine what it might be, and I've searched rhymes and found nothing but anyway probably best not to try and explain it to me, otherwise I might not sleep well tonight. Blush
