Alphonse?

I just wondered what the perception was of this name- suggested by my DH. Not pregnant yet though so lots of time- just talking hypothetically.
I don’t mind Alphie as a shortening, although I wouldn’t ever pick ‘Alfie’ on its own. Suppose could also be Al or Alph.
I have loved the nickname Teddy as short for Edward/Edmund/Edgar for over a decade and now we come to actually planning TTC it’s crazy popular dammit.
I’m not bothered about them being the only one in the school with a name but not one of five in the class.

It’s not my last name but it’s quite similar to Jones - so Alphonse Jones.

Swap the 'p' in ponce for an 'n'.

A joke is a joke, but that's really something you wouldn't want to be called as a nickname.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/11/2020 20:33

Of yes, of course, how stupid of me!
I should have remembered that from my old Wormwood Scrubs days. Wink

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 10/11/2020 20:39

@GoldenNCurly

Is he a fan of Full Metal Alchemist?
I am and it’s the first thing I thought Grin
ladycarlotta · 10/11/2020 21:24

Aww. I think it's quite a great name, but I don't think I'd be brave enough to name a child that.

TheNanny23 · 10/11/2020 22:58

@August20 @GoldenNCurly

You’ve got it- it was indeed from the manga / anime Full Metal Alchemist!

He has accepted the comments and is off to brainstorm anew. This came about because all the girls names I like are of inspirational women and I told him to think of inspirational men- and he comes up with that Grin

He has come back with Erwin...

LadyGAgain · 10/11/2020 23:20

Ask him to think harder Grin

RHOBHfan · 10/11/2020 23:21

I prefer Balonz.

Scarby9 · 10/11/2020 23:24

A friend's baby was called Alfie.
As a baby, he aquired the nickname Alphonse and now, as a teenager, is universally known as Fonz or Fonzie.

veraismyspiritanimal · 10/11/2020 23:24

Reminds me of a kids programme when I was a kid called Alfonzo Bonzo 😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/11/2020 00:51

It made me think of that programme too, but whenever I've mentioned it when reminiscing with others of a similar age, nobody else has ever recalled seeing it, so I wondered if it hadn't actually been on TV at all and I had just imagined it Blush Grin

LizaE · 11/11/2020 00:57

@Changethetoner Do all names need to be traditional English?

August20 · 11/11/2020 01:10

@TheNanny23

I misread that and thought you said he had come back with Elric (which is the character's surname).

I still like the name but I think from the comments it doesn't go down to well in England.

Blondiney · 11/11/2020 01:13

Comedy Italian name. No.

Enough4me · 11/11/2020 01:16

Erwin reminds me of earwig.

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 01:17

@August20

It was it rhyming with nonce what did it- I work in prisons and hear that all the time!

Pretty sure Erwin is from Attack on Titan!

OP posts:
alexdgr8 · 11/11/2020 01:27

can't you pick a more mainstream name.
i feel it's unfair to saddle a child with an obscure or odd name from some kind of niche literature that you happen to like.

FortunesFave · 11/11/2020 01:27

Oh bless him OP! Erwin! I've never heard such a whiney sounding name in my life.

It literally begins with the noise kids make when they find something disgusting ...!

FortunesFave · 11/11/2020 01:29

What about some Welsh names? Some of them are quite heroic....Afon, Emyr, Rhys...

August20 · 11/11/2020 01:32

Oh dear. Maybe back to Edward. Grin

TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 02:08

Bloody hell I love the honesty on here!

Roland? Geoffrey? Henrick? Vincent? Tristan?

Any other suggestions because clearly DH’s aren’t going down well 😂

OP posts:
TheNanny23 · 11/11/2020 02:10

@alexdgr8

I think that’s a little unfair, I mean it isn’t a ‘made up name’ and all names go through trends and changes in popularity over time.

Ok, Alphonse Is off. But I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have names that are a bit more obscure.

OP posts:
FortunesFave · 11/11/2020 03:25

I think Vincent is great as is Tristan...lovely.

merryhouse · 11/11/2020 10:22

There was a Tristan in my son's primary school class (born 2003).

Every time I mentioned this to my wider acquaintance, they got completely the wrong idea Grin

The kid (quite bright, and nice enough, at least in those days) was a bit of a toughie with an uncle in prison and - I'm told - joined one of the more aggressive local football teams.

Certainly never seemed to have a problem with his name.

Ellmau · 11/11/2020 18:25

Alphonse is a bit 1920s French waiter.

Erwin sounds more like a surname than a first name.

What about Edwin? You could have your Teddy nn.
