Sisters Baby Girl - urgent name help*

Roseg990 · 02/11/2020 09:12

Hello all ! My sister who is 20 is having a baby girl in December and can’t find the perfect name.
Ideas:
Ophelia - getting very common so won’t be using
Ocean -
Bluebell -
Tamsin - would get nn tam which isn’t nice (too old fashioned)
Estella - seems too old fashioned
Alaska - probably a bit out there
Aurora - also getting quite common but we love it

Please give name suggestions and what you think of these names
Thanks x

Why are people so rude. If opening a thread on an internet page offends you because of the word 'urgent' then you need less time on the internet and something else to put your energy into.

I like the names except Alaska, Bluebell and Ocean. Tamsin and Estella sound unusual but not weird nowadays, not old fashioned I don't think. How about Jasmine or Yasmine? Or Meadow?

DawnMumsnet · 02/11/2020 12:00

@TabithaMeow

Also I worry about posters who think the title 'urgent NAME help' would be about anything other than urgent advice about a baby name. It isn't the OP's fault you weren't paying attention. Stop being such drama llamas.
Aha, it looks like you clicked on the thread after we edited the title. It originally said ' Sister's Baby Girl Urgent Help' so was a little bit more alarming.

Hopefully it can get back on track now.

Lsquiggles · 02/11/2020 12:03

They're all a bit try hard, sorry

Originally said sisters baby urgent help.

I took that to mean a life or death situation.

CastleOfDoom · 02/11/2020 12:04

Second time today the OP has been bullied by the masses for an unfortunate titled thread. No need.

Frdd · 02/11/2020 12:05

Sorry. Sisters baby girl urgent help.

Babyg1995 · 02/11/2020 12:09

I don't like any of them apart from ophelia.

JuiceFromOrangePeelInYourEye · 02/11/2020 12:30

What a bunch of grumpy hags in this comment section😂.

Tamsin and Estella are my favourites from your list.

How about:
Sadie
Celeste
Clover
Dawn
Daisy
Anya
Jasmine
Brooke
Hollie
Poppy
Autumn
Willow
Clara
Violet

You seem nice.

@TabithaMeow

I love Alaska! It is beautiful! Also like Aurora and Ophelia although agree it is too popular now. I LOVE Bluebell but would never be brave enough to use it! I think it sounds beautiful, and Blue and Bell are both adorable nicknames. Also fail to see how it is weird when other flower names are insanely popular at the moment, as sre other names that sound similar like Isabel. How about Ophira, if you like Ophelia? Or how about Juniper if she likes nature-y names? Or Juno? Sorry people are being rude and aggressive to you, there is no need for it. I hate it when Mumsnet gets like this - women ganging up on people, being sarcastic and vile, verging on actual bullying, for no reason. Worries me that many of these posters are parents if they think this is acceptable behaviour. Ignore them, OP.
Thank you so much

Tamsin and Estella are my favourites from the list. I don't think Tamsin has to be Tam. Tammy is a nicer nn than Tam, but the Tamsin I know is just Tamsin.

Other names your sister might like:
Tamara
Tara
Jasmine
Saffron
Imogen
Briony
Astrid
Hazel
Juno
Willow
River
Nova
Delphine
Marina
Pearl
Saskia
Oriana

Sunsetdawn · 02/11/2020 13:58

I really like Alaska

lazylockdowner · 02/11/2020 14:00

Instead of Aurora which is picking up in popularity how about Elora which is very pretty and not common at all

CoffeeRunner · 02/11/2020 14:09

Aurelia (similar vibes to Ophelia & Aurora)
Lola

Alaska is pretty much child cruelty. As others have said, opening her up to a lifetime of “I’ll ask her” jokes.

The other names are fine. Bluebell is very twee & better suited to a toddler, but no worse than other names out there.

JuiceFromOrangePeelInYourEye · 02/11/2020 14:19

@BertieBloopsMum ❄💗

CaffiSaliMali · 02/11/2020 17:51

Tamsin is lovely.

Your sister seems to like nature names:
Saffron
Juniper
Laurel
Rosemary
Elowen
Cassia
Jasmine
Hazel
Olive
Pearl
Opal

Other astronomical names (like Ophelia, many are also Shakespearean too):
Nova
Lyra
Juliet
Rosalind
Cressida
Cordelia
Pandora
Miranda
Sylvia
Faye
Larissa

Some random names outside the Top 100 (for E&W, worth looking the full top 1000 list up online):
Rosalie
Susanna
Marisa
Verity
Louisa
Eden
Natalie
Natasha
Clementine
Serena
Evangeline
Josephine

All of you commenting about the use of 'urgent' and 'horrid names' are coming across as superior bullies. It was clear in your post op that you are younger than many on Mumsnet and lots here have taken advantage of that to be rude to you. You asked for thoughts on some perfectly normal names , Ophelia, Tamsin, Estella, Aurora are not out there at all and come up on other threads. I like them all apart from Alaska, and my children have quite boring names. I think a teenage Bluebell could be Blue which would be very cool. Those making the serious job comment should not be in positions where they hire people without going on unconscious bias training.

Happenchance · 02/11/2020 17:53

I only like Estella from your list. I wouldn't use Aurora incase the child had a speech impediment that made it hard to pronounce r. I hate Tamsin.

How about:
Celeste (CeCe)
Isolde
Asia
Araminta
Dahlia
Azalea?

SpongeWorthy · 02/11/2020 17:59

Holly
Aurelia
Meadow
Daisy
Indigo
Wren
Willow
Ottilie

Do any of those tickle your fancy?

lockedownloretta · 02/11/2020 18:01

Ophelia - tits
Ocean -no
Bluebell -cow's name
Tamsin -bit 80s
Estella - spanish beer
Alaska - baked
Aurora - i know one who can't pronounce her rs. sounds very silly

Serenity05 · 02/11/2020 18:31

Ophelia - very pretty but the tragic Hamlet associations put me off.
Ocean - my least favourite on your list.
Bluebell - Blue is a cool nickname but I think this works better as a middle name.
Tamsin - LOVE! She wouldn't have to be Tam.
Estella - pretty, and I like Stella as a nickname.
Alaska - makes me think of the character from the book Looking for Alaska - she was a cool, free spirit but she had a tragic end.
Aurora - love it, especially with the nickname Rory.

From your list I'd go with Tamsin Bluebell.

Other suggestions:

Delilah
Clementine
Seraphina
Cosima
Allegra
Cedar
Juniper
Dakota

shesgonebatshitagain · 02/11/2020 18:41

See the pedants are out in force

Hmm

I like Estella none of the others
How about
Fleur
Winter
Ember

For seasonal and slightly off beat names

Masssivefuckup · 02/11/2020 18:48

How about Tasmin instead of Tamsin?

Or Alannah?

My favourite from your list is Aurora Smile

Bumblebecede · 02/11/2020 19:17

Wholeheartedly agree @beinggood

Tamsin is a fab choice.

Ellmau · 02/11/2020 19:31

What about Aurelia? Less common than Aurora, and combines the sounds of Aurora and Ophelia.

I would advise against Ocean, Bluebell or Alaska.
