Girls names - possibly Hazel?

DPs choice is Arabella. I know a few, so the fact it’s quite common puts me off. It’s a bit too long and “princessy” for me. Also, I feel it would be shortened to Bella and there’s a lot of those too.

My choice is Phoebe. We don’t personally know any and I think it’s cute. It’s a little more common than I’d like in general but it goes with DPs very common surname. DP isn’t keen at all, he’s also not keen on Rosa which is another one of my choices that I’m scribbling off my list.

The only name we’ve both said we like is Hazel. I don’t know any and I love old names (our eldest son has an old name that made a comeback). I like that it’s not too long and can’t really be shortened to anything. The only thing I don’t like about it is how it looks written down which isn’t a major issue, and it’s possibly because I’ve stared at it for so long now as it’s the only name we can both agree on. I like that it’s an older name so that doesn’t put me off. It’s a nice balance of being unique (for where we live anyway) and not so uncommon you question it (in my opinion). Interested to see what others think!

We’re not telling our families the name, mainly because my side of the family are very opinionated and would put anyone off their chosen name and DPs family start calling the baby by the chosen name before they’re here and I don’t like that (can’t explain why, I just don’t).

Hazel is very pretty, go for it! I also like how it’s written.

FippertyGibbett · 25/10/2020 20:14

Mabel ?

Bumble84 · 25/10/2020 20:15

I’m due in December and Hazel is on my possible list. I think it’s a lovely name.

Dotinthecity · 25/10/2020 20:15

Hazel is a lovely name!

mintich · 25/10/2020 20:17

I prefer Hazel out of the 3

missmouse101 · 25/10/2020 20:18

Hazel is gorgeous and I love the way it looks written down. Rosa is sweet too. Not keen on Arabella and really dislike Mabel, as suggested by a pp.

I could just be ignorant - but I can’t imagine a young person being called Hazel? I’m in my early 20s and don’t know any Hazels. I have only really come across it on shows etc where the character tends to be older.

Growing up, she’ll probably be known as “H” or “Haze” for short

Whatthedoodle · 25/10/2020 20:23

Thank you! I did like Mabel til it became quite popular. Hazel has the same sort of ring to it without it being as common which is why DP and I like it.

Arabella is definitely off the cards for me, it just surprised me that DP liked Hazel when to me Arabella is more of a modern name that I’m just not into at all.

Phoebe is my absolute favourite, but Hazel is lovely too!

Whatthedoodle · 25/10/2020 20:27

I think with any name the shortened versions can be a bit awful so I’m not going to let that put me off. DS has an old name that has many shortened versions but nobody calls him by it, we call him by his fully name so others follow suit. Although, he only really suits the full title rather than the shortened versions anyway.

Hazel is beautiful.

DefinitelyPossiblyMaybe · 25/10/2020 20:33

I hate the name Hazel as its my evil sister's name, so ignore me, I'm totally prejudiced 😄. Rachel?

rosesareredxxx · 25/10/2020 20:35

Hazel is a really cool name and not too popular. Go for it

SWLondonTown · 25/10/2020 20:39

Is she likely to have Hazel eyes? The two I know (30’s) both have lovely hazel colouring where the name inspiration came from I believe

AliceMcK · 25/10/2020 20:40

MegaBloxRoxx · 25/10/2020 21:19

Phoebe is top of my list if this bean is a girl, but I also like Hazel. Not keen on Arabella (and Mabel is awful). Rosa is a beautiful name too.

How did the parents know their babies would have hazel colouring when they named them?

OP Hazel is a gorgeous name, it's in our top 3 choices if our next DC is a girl.

Yennefer19 · 25/10/2020 22:18

I really like Hazel and Arabella but not too keen on Phoebe.

If you like Rosa would your DH like Rosalie. I feel like that has a princess feel while still being Rosa so maybe he might like that?

Robinm87 · 25/10/2020 22:29

Roma Is nice too

Tillygetsit · 25/10/2020 22:39

Hazel is lovely.

emsyj37 · 25/10/2020 22:44

I have a Hazel. It's my favourite name ever! We haven't come across any others yet.... DD is nearly 8 now.
Also love Astrid, that has been suggested by a PP and was on our list - Cora is beautiful too, and I love Rosalie. Arianne? Hazel is obviously the best though Grin

emsyj37 · 25/10/2020 22:45

PS my Hazel has blue eyes...

Dollywilde · 25/10/2020 22:46

Hazel was on our list but in the end we went with Bryony.

Others we liked:

Matilda
Eloise
Genevieve
Rosemary
Juliet
Verity
