A name I've gone back and forth on is Penelope. I don't mind it being shortened to P but I don't like Penny or Nellie.

What are your thoughts on Penelope and what else could it be shortened to?

I think if you don't like Penny you shouldn't go with Penelope. Once they're at school you lose control over their nicknames!

I like Penny btw Smile

BookishZen · 25/10/2020 13:50

To be honest all the Penelope’s that I know are called Penny.

I know you don’t like Nellie but do you like Ellie or Elle.

I did read somewhere that Lola could also be used as a nn. I don’t see it myself but this could be an option for you.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 25/10/2020 13:56

I think Penelope is lovely. The two I know (adults) both sign themselves Pen. As a PP said though, at school you have no control over nicknames, so if you really hate Penny then maybe not a good idea. I have a Miranda who was Mandy throughout school and I hated it.

It's such a shame because I love Penelope but I really do dislike Penny. 🙁

Penelope is a bit floppy. Nell is cool.

Meepmeeep · 25/10/2020 14:41

Became popular after a Kardashian used it so absolutely not for me.

Ojj37 · 25/10/2020 14:47

I think Penelope and all shortenings are gorgeous. I wouldn’t go for it if I didn’t like Penny though, I think it would be inevitable.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 25/10/2020 14:57

I like Penelope. What about Pen or Nell?

I know an adult Penelope, she is definitely not a Penny!

Ladderofyears · 25/10/2020 15:02

I have met six baby Penelopes this year! And all their parents use the full name which feels really big for a little baby!

SunbathingDragon · 25/10/2020 15:08

I know a Penelope who went by Elle.

Beni1993 · 25/10/2020 15:10

Penelope pig immediately springs to mind Confused

Devilesko · 25/10/2020 15:14

We have a Penny, not Penelope in the family, 6 weeks old now.
Growing on me now. Grin

Neverwrestlewithapig · 25/10/2020 15:19

I don’t think Penelope is ‘inevitably’ Penny. I’ve heard P, Pen, Penel, Poppy, Nell, Nellie used as nicknames but also no nickname at all. If she’s never called Penny at home then she’ll probably swiftly reject it elsewhere. I know a Penelope who declares ‘That’s not my name!’ if a stranger calls her Penny (not that it happens often) which swiftly puts an end to that! Tbh nicknames can come from anywhere & aren’t necessarily anything to do with a person’s actual name. If you like the name, go for it!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/10/2020 20:00

I don't think a Penelope is automatically nicknamed Penny, it was just the most common nickname traditionally. I personally love Nell (not Nellie) as a nickname but Poppy is very cute on little girl. I've got to mention I prefer the sound of the similar Persephone over Penelope though (and I love the nn Sephie or Effie with it) but I suspect I'm alone in that as Penelope is much more popular!

Whatthedoodle · 25/10/2020 20:02

There’s a Penelope in DS’ class. She’s lovely and her name doesn’t get shortened to anything. I like it!

Frazzled2207 · 25/10/2020 20:05

Penelope was top of my list she was going to be nn Nel (extra L unnecessary IMO)
Fab name.
I had boys!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 25/10/2020 20:07

I don't like it, sorry. But I love Phoebe! Call her that!

EmilySpinach · 25/10/2020 20:09

Penelope might not automatically become Penny but if the child herself likes it then she won’t stop others using it. I went to school with an Elizabeth who encouraged us to call her Liz as an act of teenage rebellion when she realised that her mother hated it. It isn’t a good idea to use a name if you really hate the most common short version.

Onechance551188 · 25/10/2020 20:15

I think Penny is nice, what about Pippa? I also think Elle is a nice name, lots of options

StewDumpLynette · 25/10/2020 20:16

This name along with Mason really took off because of the Kardshia.

Polly
Paloma
Pia

Yennefer19 · 25/10/2020 20:17

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I agree with you about Persephone. I think the fact that it’s probably likely to be mispronounced might put people off it.

FippertyGibbett · 25/10/2020 20:17

Penelope Pit Stop from an old kids programme !

StewDumpLynette · 25/10/2020 20:25

Doesn't Kourtney Kardashian call her daughter Penelope just P?

What about Gigi, Kylie, Mabel, Harper

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/10/2020 20:36

@Yennefer19 - I like your user name, Witcher fan too? Glad I'm not the only one who likes Persephone and I agree it's most likely a pronunciation issue or perhaps they are put off by the myth. I think it's the harsher "pee" sound at the end of Penelope puts me off it a bit in comparison.

Babymamma192 · 25/10/2020 20:55

I love this name! Dd was nearly penelope but it just didn't suit her when she was born definitely still on my list if I ever have another girl though
