Love it.

It was my grandmothers name, but my ex wouldn't let me use as first name coz is slightly unusual (he was boring Grin) So we used it as her middle name.

I like it, only ever know one, she is late teens now.

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 19/10/2020 07:46

Love it, on my list too

SeanCailleach · 19/10/2020 07:46

It's a lovely sounding name. Tragic Shakespearian character - not a great role model.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 19/10/2020 07:48

Love it ....but is it a new Radcliffe (25 kids and counting or whatever) baby name ? Or did I dream that??

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 19/10/2020 07:48

My point being , is it on the cusp of becoming very popular? If that bothers you ...

JaJaDingDong · 19/10/2020 07:54

I know a ten year old Ophelia. Don't like the name or her much. I find it difficult to say.

Love! Really pretty name!

eddiemairswife · 19/10/2020 15:02

My gardener's little girl is Ophelia; his wife is a drama teacher. I haven't asked him what they would call a boy.

Qwom · 19/10/2020 15:03

Adore it!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/10/2020 15:15

Despise it.

Beautiful...is Effie short this name? I love that

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/10/2020 17:53

I love Ophelia! I think it's beautiful and elegant - It's the name I'd love to have used but unfortunately it doesn't work with my surname. Effie is a lovely nickname if you want one too.

I wouldn't worry about the Shakespeare tragedy much, 40 years ago it might have caused some teasing/comments but the name is used much more commonly now (plus the character of Ophelia has been reclaimed by feminists in recent years with plays/films written from her point of view).

Only thing to make sure of is that your surname doesn't sound like/ rhyme with something rude or funny as Ophelia can sound like "I'll feel ya" and then kids might tease.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/10/2020 17:57

is Effie short this name? I love that

Effie's traditionally short for Euphemia but I've heard it used for any girls name with a strong "ph" or "f" sound (so Ophelia, Josephine, Persephone etc).

RedRec · 19/10/2020 17:57

As long as your surname isn't Balls.

TheVanguardSix · 19/10/2020 18:00

I do like it. I used to love it and it was THE NAME for DD (now 10). But I was at a midwife appointment and on the wall was hanging a copy of Millais' painting 'Ophelia' (beautiful painting, by the way) and the tragedy of her character really struck me in that moment. So, we didn't call DD Ophelia. She is such a sad character.

Beautiful...is Effie short this name? I love that Effie is a name in its own right but originally it was the diminutive of Euphemia. Could be the diminutive of Ephigenia as well or even Elfreda (in Germany, Elfie is the diminutive of Elfreda).

monkeyonthetable · 19/10/2020 18:08

It sounds pretty but the only major figure by that name is Shakespeare's Ophelia who is so tragic. Mind you that puts no one off calling their daughter Juliet.

Tillygetsit · 19/10/2020 22:40

I don't hate it but I do intensely dislike it. Each to their own and all that.

Whatthebloodyell · 19/10/2020 22:45

Awful.

gretagreengrapes · 19/10/2020 22:50

I dislike because in a book I read someone said "ophelia, let me feel ya" and now thats all I hear.

theconstantinoplegardener · 19/10/2020 22:56

I like it, but I went to secondary school with a lovely Ophelia and the boys used to joke about "can I get a feel o' ya?".

AlwaysLatte · 19/10/2020 23:05

I love it too, but I always try to think with names - does it sound like other random words, and it really does sound like 'I feel yah'
I love Seraphina, one of our top girls' names.

TheChristmasPrincess · 19/10/2020 23:16

Dislike because I remember Graham Norton looking for rude names in an American phone book and finding the name Ophelia Bumgarden. He said "what were her parents thinking'.

All I hear is 'I-feel-ya' and it's quite unfortunate with a lot of surnames
