Love it or hate it?

It has such tragic connotations that I can't bring myself to like it.

thebuntingcat · 19/10/2020 23:23

I like it, it’s a lovely name - as long as your surname goes ok with it.

If you’re called Payne, Hart, Balls, Dick, Legge etc it’s best to avoid it!

TheySeeHerRowling · 19/10/2020 23:25

Dd has a friend called Ophelia but she calls herself Phil

jackstini · 19/10/2020 23:27

Love it
And the nn Phil

Sals27 · 19/10/2020 23:30

Love it, it's DDs middle name

Bellabelles · 19/10/2020 23:31

It’s pretty but I can’t disassociate it from Shakespearean tragedy - seems a bit of a burden for a child. It’s also massively increasing in popularity which would put me off .

paperclippink · 20/10/2020 03:00

Without its associations it's a lovely-sounding name. I have a feeling it's going to become very popular...

Wotsitone · 20/10/2020 12:54

I really like it pronounced Oh feel ia. Not so keen when it is pronounced off Elia. Is there a correct pronunciation?

I like it but there seems to be a lot of them right now ... Ottillie is lovely as an alternative x

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/10/2020 17:49

In the UK I've only heard it pronounced "oh - fee - lee -ah" (which is likely the correct Shakespearean pronunciation) or "uh - feel - ya" when said by people with more of a drawl or quickly.

LottieDot · 20/10/2020 19:05

Don't like it as there's a drag queen locally called Ophelia Balls and that's all I hear. That and how similar it sounds to pedophilia (I know its not exact but it's too close for me, sorry!).

Looby4 · 20/10/2020 19:07

Love it 💓💓💓

catlovingdoctor · 20/10/2020 19:11

Lovely and elegant.

GammyLeg · 20/10/2020 19:12

Beautiful.

The tragedy element (of a fictional character) wouldn’t bother me.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 20/10/2020 19:15

I really like it

alexdgr8 · 20/10/2020 19:16

NO. didn't she come to a sticky end. most unfortunate.
people will be saying Jezabel sounds nice next, or Rehab....

tombliboozey · 20/10/2020 23:24

I love it. Is in my wish I had the guts to use it and it wasn't vetoed by my DH list. Though it is I would say much more popular in recent years than it has been before I would not say it is a common name at all (depending on what circles you move in I guess) or that it is likely to be anytime soon as it is still seen as quite a gutsy, out there, name to go for.
I would pronounce Oh- feel - ee - ah. Never heard pronounced any other way.
Shakespeare reference really wouldn't bother me can think of names with far worse references and as pp no issues with Juliet.
I echo other pp though that if you have any type of surname that is a noun particularly if rude e.g. balls I would not go there.
Nn Effie is gorgeous.

percheron67 · 20/10/2020 23:52

I love the name.

whattodo2019 · 21/10/2020 00:01

Absolutely awful. The parents of the two children we know called Ophelia are trying desperately to escape the working class roots.

VenusClapTrap · 21/10/2020 10:19

I’m not keen. It’s a bit dramarama.

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 14:08

Lovely. Calliope, Athene, Nyla?
Persephone and Ottilie give me the same vibe as Ophelia.

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 14:10

I think Jezebel sounds lovely.
