Maxima

We have a short one syllable name and I love the nickname Max for a girl.

DH likes it but feels it might be a bit too harsh sounding and thinks Maxwell would be a better option to get Max but I'm not so keen on Maxwell.

What do you think of this name? We also haven't settled on any middle names so that isn't a problem (yet!)

Isn't it Maxine for the feminine version?

I don't like Maxima sorry

MrsPhyllisTyne · 03/10/2020 15:05

I love it! The Queen of the Netherlands is called Máxima, she's Argentinian and seems a real character (in a fun, friendly kind of a way).

coconutlife · 03/10/2020 17:34

Maxima is also a feminine name of Latin origin, we don't really like Maxine. I feel it sounds slightly dated

I’m not sure about Maxima. It has images of plus-size stuff - incontinence pads, sanpro, estate car, etc, to me. Maybe it’ll grow on me.

emmathedilemma · 03/10/2020 17:47

Definitely with @daisypond on the incontinence pads / sanitary towels here!

Crankley · 03/10/2020 17:53

I also agree with daisypond

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2020 17:53

It sounds like you wanted a boy.

SionnachRua · 03/10/2020 18:04

I agree that Maxima sounds like a plus size range. Maxine is nicer.

However please do not name a girl Maxwell Envy

toastofthetown · 03/10/2020 18:15

I actually like Maxima for a girl, and I much prefer it to Maxine (which I agree with you seems dated) or Maxwell (which I don't like for a boy or girl). Maxime doesn't feel as dated as Maxine to me, which is another option.

percheron67 · 03/10/2020 18:26

Maxima is gorgeous. Maxwell is a male name. (Or a coffee brand).

coconutlife · 03/10/2020 19:01

I hadn't really made the association with the plus size though but it's definitely something we should consider.

And no, we definitely did not want a boy (we would've been equally as happy though) but we are very much delighted to have a girl

I thought of the Queen but also I hope the jod doesn't end up on the larger side because children (and adults) can be cruel

olderthanyouthink · 03/10/2020 19:21

Kid not jod

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 03/10/2020 20:27

You cannot name a girl Maxwell. I like Maxima.

MidnightCitrus · 03/10/2020 20:33

Maxime is one of the main characters in I'll take manhatten by Judith Krantz

MikeUniformMike · 03/10/2020 20:38

Maximiliana

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 03/10/2020 20:53

I like Maxima.

Max is very cool, so is Maxie.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 03/10/2020 21:38

Whatever you do DON'T abbreviate whatever you choose down to Maxie as has been suggested. It just screams of Maxi-pad!

Monkeytapper · 03/10/2020 21:47

I see the name quite often at the moment as it’s the name of a hand sanitiser we use at work

Maxima
ShellsAndSunrises · 03/10/2020 21:50

It reminds me of hand sanitizer right now... but I used to work with a Maximiliana and she hated it.‘I thought it was quite exotic! She did not.

Firebird83 · 03/10/2020 23:42

I have also heard Maxina as an alternative, I think I prefer that.

Amani · 03/10/2020 23:54

Sounds to similar to the word 'maximum'
Sorry it's a 'no' from me for the name ...

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/10/2020 23:56

@MrsPhyllisTyne

That's right *@MrsPhyllisTyne*

Maxima Queen of the Netherlands is very much admired on the Style & Beauty Royal Clothes thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3971705-Royal-Style-I-m-not-qualified-but-you-can-t-cut-me-off-when-there-s-a-wedding-dress-to-look-at

I love the name.

AngelaScandal · 04/10/2020 00:07

We heart Max 💖 over on Royal Style and Beauty

MercyBodle · 04/10/2020 05:23

Maxima/Max is great. Definitely not Maxwell, a boy's name.
