Common as in well used

I would say fairly common

Uncommon in this country (nobody I meet has met anyone with my name before) however, it's definitely more common in a certain other country.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 28/09/2020 00:58

I doubt mine is even Top 500 now, but growing up it was more common than spots during Chickenpox season. There were 4 others with my name in a class of 15 girls.

And you'd had to be known as Emma W (not my name!) until you left school, because almost everyone had the middle name Louise too Grin

FuckYouCorona · 28/09/2020 01:04

One of the most common names ever a few decades ago. 4 of us with the same name in a class of 15. Pretty much unheard of now though. It is a unisex name, but mainly used for females.

FuckYouCorona · 28/09/2020 01:05

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange were we in the same class perhaps? Grin

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 28/09/2020 02:16

FuckYouCorona quite possibly Grin

I decided I didn't want the same for my DC, they each were given classic names that weren't frequently used, but weren't Yooneek either. Until DC3, 5years later her name steamrolled into the top 10. It's been in this thread more than once...

motherofdxughters · 28/09/2020 02:33

Common in the late 80's and early 90's. Not common now.

ChristmasCarcass · 28/09/2020 02:38

@SecretWitch

Uncommon for women but according to MN fairly common for cats😂😂
I can’t believe your mum called you Tiddles, you should go NC immediately! ShockGrin
QuidcoQueen · 28/09/2020 02:41

Biblical name. Super common in the 80's. Not heard any new ones for donkeys years

ChristmasCarcass · 28/09/2020 02:43

Apparently mine is due for a resurgence, it was very popular in the 1920s. I was not born in the 20s.

CallarMorvern · 28/09/2020 02:50

Common name from the 60s, although I was the only one in my year. It's not popular now and I hate it.

Imissmoominmama · 28/09/2020 07:13

Classic, but not one of the more common classic names. I’ve just checked and it’s not in the top 100. I do know of someone with my name from every decade since the 50s to now though.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 28/09/2020 07:21

Wellknown, not common, never popular. Cannot put age group on it although rarely used nowadays (if ever). Several celebrities over the years had it!

lifestooshort123 · 28/09/2020 07:30

Common in the 50s and consequently dates me. If someone on the phone has the same name I know roughly how old she is. I would never name a baby a fashionable name for this reason. My granddaughter was given a name that was popular in the 20s and she was the only one that year on the national list. It was a surprise but we all love it now.

boobot1 · 28/09/2020 07:33

Common in the decade it was given, but not now.

PamsterWheel · 28/09/2020 07:58

At my primary school there were 3 of us in my class of 25ish (no idea about the two classes in the year).
At my senior school there were 3 of us in the school year of about 90 (not the same ones as from my primary)
Didn't meet anyone at University with the same name - none in my circle of friends (or girlfriends of the boys), none on my course that I knew of but didn't know everyone.
Encountered 1 person socially since then with the same name and 2 at one particular place of work of about 1000 people though again, I didn't know everyone.

I just had a look on this website

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/babynamesenglandandwalestop100babynameshistoricaldata

it's not my exact year but within my decade and a couple years after I was born my name is very popular - top 3 - which is why it's surprising that I haven't encountered that many past school even amongst women my own age. Then again my circle is very small these days!

PamsterWheel · 28/09/2020 08:03

Just to add having checked top 100 names my name hasn't made it in since the late 90s!

redavocado · 28/09/2020 08:21

It's a really normal name in most European countries but I've only ever met a handful of others. There's a boys' equivalent and that (or the standard abbreviation) seems to be much more common.

It seems very obvious to me what the name is now but maybe not to others!

whiteroseredrose · 28/09/2020 08:34

Both DH and I have very common 1960s names.

Sadly DS's name wasn't so common where he was born but really is where we live now. There were 5 in his class!

DD's name is classic and not unusual but also not highly used.

VickySunshine · 28/09/2020 08:37

Uncommon. I frequently have to spell it out and I have never met anybody else with my name. Classical Greek in origin.

pinkyboots1 · 28/09/2020 08:44

Reasonably common for my age group but you wouldn't call a baby it now !

GreenEyedDevil · 28/09/2020 08:47

Uncommon but classic.

carolinesbaby · 28/09/2020 08:49

Mine was no. 1 most popular name for girls in my year of birth, and my middle name is one of two that every girl had in that decade. My parents had no imagination!
Having said that, I never had a another girl with my name in my year group or class throughout 16 years of education, I've never worked with one either.

fairydustandpixies · 28/09/2020 08:50

Uncommon first name. I've never met another 'me' but there is a pop star with my name but spelt differently. Surname is very common but spelt in an unusual way.

BeyondMyWits · 28/09/2020 08:51

Not common in UK but common in more Catholic countries.

Flymetothestars · 28/09/2020 09:09

Common but I do still like it. Less common the older I've got but always were a couple of us in a class
