Bronwen Scout for a girl?

I really like Winnie for a girl, could Bronwen be shortened to Winnie? We've decided on Scout for a middle name if it's a girl. Do you like Bronwen Scout?

I agree. Weasel = wenci

Bronwen doesn’t have a win sound in it. The sound at the end is ‘wen’ so whereas you could shorten it to weni/wennie, I’m really not getting Winnie from it!

EvaHoffman · 26/09/2020 15:30

Some people aren't reading it correctly. It's not Bronwyn, it's Bronwen pronounced wen not win!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 26/09/2020 15:45

Bronwen Scout is lovely. Winnie is cute or you could use Wenna

PoodleMoth · 26/09/2020 16:15

Scout is lovely, Winnie is ok but have a strong dislike for Bronwen ( and all the ones I have heard of have shortened to Bronnie)

Sunnyset · 26/09/2020 16:17

Bronwen is lovely.
Not scout with it though, sounds like Brownies and Scouts.

YellowShop · 26/09/2020 16:19

I like Bronwen, but not Scout.
I love Bronagh, as a different option.

Pixilicious · 26/09/2020 16:23

Bronwen is nice. And if you like scout for a middle name use it. No one uses middle names anyway (do you know the middle names if anyone other than family??) so who cares what we all think if it?

TreesoftheField · 26/09/2020 16:25

You could also use Rozenwyn. I know a little one who gets shortened to Winnie.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/09/2020 16:28

@MikeUniformMike Alwyn absolutely IS a Welsh name. A male name.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 26/09/2020 16:28

My wife's name is Bronwyn - usually shortened to Bron or Bronnie - she's never called Winnie.

She loves her name - it suits her and it's rare to meet another one.

Coincidentally her mum was Winifred and was always called Winnie or Win.

Kanaloa · 26/09/2020 16:43

Bronwen is nice. I’m not as keen on Scout but I think it works for a middle name. Winnie is also nice as a nickname.

Jocasta2018 · 26/09/2020 16:54

I had an Great Aunt Winnie when I was little & she was lovely. Great associations with the name.
Now I'm older & more worldly-wise unfortunately I hear 'Winnie' & think of Winnie Mandela & her Mandela United Football Club.

Crystal87 · 26/09/2020 17:07

Dreadful

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 19:35

@LadyMonicaBaddingham, it isn't. It's an english name.

Alwen is a welsh name, but Alwyn isn't the male version.

Similarly, Arwyn is welsh, but Arwen isn't.

It doesn't mean that it isn't treated as a welsh name, I know a few welsh Alwyns and at least one welsh Arwen.

I was quite surprised too.

I'm so glad I posted now!
@RouxLou I really like the name Winter and I do think it would work well with my other kids names, thank you for that suggestion.
@Maryann1975 We aren't Scout leaders, Scout is a name we've considered but decided not to go with for our other daughters but we both really like it and I think it's a strong name for a girl.

I hadn't realised the Brownie reference or the Winnie the pooh reference so I'll have to think about that.

Other name options we like for a girl are Marlowe, June and Xanthe. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Quite like Winnie, but not a fan of Bronwen or Scout & not Bronwen Scout!!!

tanstaafl · 26/09/2020 20:34

@MikeUniformMike
Have to challenge you (slightly) that Alwyn isn’t a male name.

(Appreciate you’re saying it isn’t the male version of Alwen)

SuitedandBooted · 26/09/2020 20:34

I had a couple of friends called Bronwen growing up. Winnie is not a short version of it. They were always called Bron. There is no "Wyn" sound in the name. If you can't pronounce it properly, please chose something else.

The only Winnie I know is officially called Edwina. If you want something unusual, how about Igraine, which is my fantasy choice! (and King Arthur's mum)

museumum · 26/09/2020 20:38

I like scout and bronwen but no to brownie scout and also no to winter scout (sounds like a job in an outward bound centre).

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 20:38

@tanstaafl, are you saying that Alwyn isn't a male name or are you saying that I said it?

I said Alwen is a welsh name, but Alwyn isn't the male version

What I meant was Alwen is a welsh girl's name and Alwyn is an english boy's name; there is no direct connection between the two.

I can assure you that all the Alwyns I know, to my knowledge have been male.

MileyWiley · 26/09/2020 20:40

Just reminds me of Brownies and Scouts

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 20:47

I prefer Branwen to Bronwen. Weasel is nice though, or perhaps Teasel.

Lemonsyellow · 26/09/2020 21:10

You can’t get Winnie from Bronwen. I’m not keen on either, though. June and Xanthe are both nice. Not keen on Marlowe.

OpEd · 26/09/2020 21:22

Brownie Scout?

Just checking your surname isn't Baden Powel?

OpEd · 26/09/2020 21:23

I have an Aunt Winnie and I have no idea what it is short for!
