Bronwen Scout for a girl?

I really like Winnie for a girl, could Bronwen be shortened to Winnie? We've decided on Scout for a middle name if it's a girl. Do you like Bronwen Scout?

I used to know an Anwen who got shortened to Winnie so I’m sure Bronwen could be too

Changedname81 · 26/09/2020 10:00

Like a pp said - the wyn sound is mostly masculine; however if you are trying to find “wen” names how about Elowen?

I do like Scout but not with Bronwen really.

Good luck with it all Grin

Maryann1975 · 26/09/2020 10:04

I like bronwen, but not Scout. Out of interest, What are your reasons for choosing Scout as name? I’d assume you were scout leaders And trying to pass that on to your dc tbh.

M0mmyneedswine · 26/09/2020 10:12

I read it as brownie scout, i really dont like Winnie sorry although if your set on that then Bronwyn is fine for a longer name

mamah2019 · 26/09/2020 10:14

This is absolutely beautiful! I love love love Scout for a girl. X

Waspie · 26/09/2020 10:23

I love Scout - but then To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favourite books so I guess I'm biased.

PPs idea of Gwyneth is a good one I think. Gwyneth was my grandmother's name and she was known as "Win" or "Winnie".

Welsh girls names are the best. If I'd had a girl she would have been either Isolde or Rhianwen.

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 14:15

I'd avoid Bronwen despite it being a lovely name because it will get misspelt as Bronwyn.

Isolde isn't welsh, neither is Alwyn.

Scout is lovely but only as a nn. I'd save it for when you have a pet.

Scarydinosaurs · 26/09/2020 14:19

I love all of them- Bronwen, Scout and Winnie.

Lovely names. Scout as a middle name works as the literary connection is so nice.

tanstaafl · 26/09/2020 14:22

Bronwen is Welsh for ‘white breast’ in a Nature kind of way - but is the potential source of lots of teasing for an adolescent girl.

sunyla · 26/09/2020 14:23

I don't really like Bronwen much but it could definitely be shortened to Winnie. I love Scout.

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 14:24

@tantstaafi, it's welsh for weasel.

ShrekandDonkey · 26/09/2020 14:25

A friend of mine has an Ellowyn which is shortened to Winnie if that helps?

Sunnydaysstillhere · 26/09/2020 14:25

Looks like Brownie Scout...

sunyla · 26/09/2020 14:26

@RouxLou Winter with the nickname Winnie is lovely!

Bbq1 · 26/09/2020 14:27

Like Bronwen but not Winnie. Sounds like a little old lady. Wouldn't Bronwen be shortened to Bron, Bronny or Wen?

florascotia2 · 26/09/2020 14:33

As others have said, Scout would make a good middle name. To Kill A Mockigbird is a very important book, but in it, Scout is a nickname. The character's given name is Jean Louise.

Harper Lee was a pen-name. In everyday life, the author used her first name 'Nelle' (= Ellen, backwards). Harper was her middle name, said to have been given to her in honour of the doctor who saved her older sister's life.

Bronwen is not particularly to my taste, but it's a nice name. I once met a very pleasant woman called Wynne. I don't know whether that's a proper Welsh name or not - if anything, I think it's a surname - but I'm sure that someone on Mumsnet will be able to clarify.
What about Morwenna? Or Edwina? Both could easily become 'Winnie'.

Onthedancefloor · 26/09/2020 14:33

I read it as Brownie Scout too, and agree with your husband about not having 2 Freds. How about Winona Scout?

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 14:35

Winsome?

doctorhamster · 26/09/2020 14:37

I like Bronwen but not Winnie sorry. It makes me think of horses. I'm not sure you can get away with Winnie being short for Bronwen either, assuming you're pronouncing Bronwen correctly (Bron-when)

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/09/2020 14:38

I like both names separately but somehow when together it sounds like the name of a Scout troop- like Bronwen's Scouts are raising money for charity today.

Also not a fan of Winnie. Too much "winnie the pooh"

Sorry. But you did ask Grin

Quercus3 · 26/09/2020 14:42

I also saw Brownie Scout!

I think Bronwen is a beautiful name, I like Winnie and Scout too, I just wouldn't use Scout with Bronwen. I think you could get away with Winnie Scout.

Thistlegirl4 · 26/09/2020 14:45

Not keen on Bronwen but someone suggested Elowyn which is much nicer and I love Scout as a name. And it would only be a middle name after all.

Eeyorehoney · 26/09/2020 14:45

Love the name Bronwyn, for Winnie could you try something like Winona? Dislike Scout to be honest but then again most people don’t use middle names every day

tanstaafl · 26/09/2020 15:00

@MikeUniformMike , where have you heard that?
Weasel is the word wenci to me.

SeanCailleach · 26/09/2020 15:08

Why give your daughter an amazing name like Scout and put it in the middle?
Bronwen is classic. And of course you can have Winnie as a nn. But Scout is cooler.
