Hi all,

We have an Alfred George (nearly 3) and we need a name and middle name for his poor nameless new brother due in a few weeks...

Guidelines (ideally)

relatively traditional (or at least not a Ballonz)

options to shorten / lengthen (e.g Alfred could be Alf, Alfie, Freddie, Alfred)

Our surname is relatively "English" and short (e.g Davies, Willis type name)

I love Albert (Bertie), Arthur, Henry etc, very "old man" names.

DH likes Jude, Finnegan, Edgar, Sunny so a bit more out there than me.

Alfred suggested Sidney or Brontosaurus 🦕 🤷‍♀️

We can both agree on most of them but so far there is nothing we love

Please help!

Edward
Nicholas
Thomas
William
Christopher
Robert
Samuel
Alexander
Frederick
Benjamin
Joseph

Find your first name first - then choose a nice middle name - maybe something your dh likes as a compromise to a more ‘out there’ name
Edward Jude for example.

I find boy names so hard. Some we considered...

Alistair (Al, Ali, probably too similar)
Robert (Rob, Robbie, Bert, Bertie, Beto)
Ronald (Ron, Ronnie, Aldo)
Desmond (Des)
Christopher (Chris, Chrissy, Topher)

Hope you can find something you love!

Sidney Jude (Sid)
Arthur Edgar (Art/Arty)..maybe too similar to Alfie if that's what you use for your other DC.

Sebastian Edgar (Seb/Sebbie)
Alexander Jude (Xan p.Zan)

Hope you let us know what you choose.

Oooh some fab ones there already, thanks... some we've not thought of too...

@Chocolatecake12 I love Frederick, Robert,

@fuzzymoon Wilfred Gregory also great.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider Really like Douglas,

@TheVanguardSix Vincent is great and might just fit both bills...

Benjamin, Edward, ...

Yes @MorayPlace , DH says Arthur too close to Alfie but I don't think so!

@Auto Edwin is on both of our lists but our godson is an Eddie, but Tristan and Oswald are pretty great...

Glad I posted now thanks!

Sidney is a great suggestion! Why not stick with that!

PlantPotting · 25/09/2020 23:09

How about Laurence or Tristan

PlantPotting · 25/09/2020 23:09

Peter?

ODFOx · 25/09/2020 23:13

Edgar Sidney or Edgar Henry are lovely.

Though a Finnegan Brontesaurus could work depending on you surname 😀.
Alfred and Edgar (Alf and Ed or Alfie and Eddie, work brilliantly together.

1000umbrellas · 25/09/2020 23:17

John/Jonathan very traditional and don't even seem to make the top 100 currently, plus Jack is the traditional nickname for John if you prefer a nn that's more widely used. Cameron is popular in Scotland, shortens to Cam.

Jilljams · 25/09/2020 23:17

I know brothers Alfred and Edgar, the names do go really well together.

1000umbrellas · 25/09/2020 23:22

Other names with lots of possible nn:
Theodore: Ted, Teddy, Theo
Christopher: Chris, Topher
Peter: another one not used much at the moment, can be shortened to Pete and I know a Peter who goes by Pedro but he's a bit of a wanker ;)

1000umbrellas · 25/09/2020 23:27

I like your dh's suggestion of Sunny as a nn too, any of the names that end with -son could be shortened to that: Mason, Jackson, Samson, Edison etc.

AHintOfStyle · 26/09/2020 00:13

Freddie Edwin ?

Although I do love Brontosaurus!!

allthesharks · 26/09/2020 01:21

Sebastian. Shortened to Seb.
