Practically perfect names?

danascully96 · 23/09/2020 06:39

Are Daniel and Anna the perfect names? I’ve noticed they get a lot of love on name sites — I’m just wondering if I should use them simple because they seem so beloved?

My current names are Charlotte, Lily, and Sabrina. I could add Anna, just not sure if I like it that much.

For boys, Alexander and Daniel are my top two right now :) But I’m edging closer to Daniel every time I listen to “Oh Danny Boy” Grin

Thoughts appreciated! ❤️

Go for names that's you love, not that randoms on the internet do.

Personally I like Anna, but Daniel seems rather wet.

notso · 23/09/2020 06:48

I love Anna, it's a name I'd be happy to be called.
Daniel is ok I don't love it though, if I was to choose a classic boys name it would be James.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 23/09/2020 06:49

I like Anna & Daniel.

Not keen on Dan or Danny though so I'd personally not go with Daniel for that reason.

They're both lovely though!

SionnachRua · 23/09/2020 06:57

No such thing as a perfect name. I don't like Anna, I find it very bland and blah. Love Sabrina, Charlotte and Daniel though.

MilkyBarsNTears · 23/09/2020 06:59

They’re both nice names.

I prefer Alexander and Sabrina, though!

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 07:18

They are classic and inoffensive names and don't really suggest anything about the individual. They are names that you probably won't regret using, whereas you might if you chose something a bit more trendy.

Lily is pretty but Lil isn't, and I dislike the Lilia, Lila, Layla, Lillian, Liliana names, and Lily written as Lilly.
Charlotte - might just be me but I find it looks prettier than it sounds and I don't like Charlie for a girl. Lottie is nice. Harriet (Hattie) might be an alternative.
Sabrina - you'd need the personality for a strong name like that. It's quite punchy but I quite like it.

Alexander - great but overused. Dislike Zander.like Alec
Daniel - I like Dan.

Of the girls'names I'd choose Anna, but ~I wouldn't pick Daniel or Alexander - nothing wrong with them, but there are names I like more.

Thefaceofboe · 23/09/2020 07:25

I really like Anna, classy and timeless. Daniel to me is very boring, much prefer Alexander

MsSquiz · 23/09/2020 07:28

I like Daniel as a boys name but could never have it as my name is Danielle and my BIL is Daniel! We did choose is as a middle name if we had had a boy (even though I thought it sounds a bit narcissistic!)

I'm not overly keen on Anna - I've known a few that I didn't get on with so maybe that's why?

We chose Charlotte for DD - it's a classic name and we like all diminutives that she might get throughout her life. Lily was also on the list, but we know quite a few.

Alexander/Alexandra were also on our list, as Alex was my Grandad's name.

Surely your list should be names you love and not just choose because other people love them?

Kanaloa · 23/09/2020 07:31

If you don’t like them then don’t use them. Use the names you actually like. Alexander, Sabrina and Charlotte are all really nice.

FluffyEggsontoast · 23/09/2020 07:32

Anna is gorgeous and I like Daniel too

ILoveStickers · 23/09/2020 07:37

Anna is great, and always gets a lot of love here. I don't like Daniel - I know lots and don't like any of them! I'm not sure I've seen it mentioned much here. James or Alexander are the "classics" here, I think.

That said, definitely go for the names you like best! You can't please everyone. Even the most loved names will get you an accusation of being "boring" from some people - you can't win.

danascully96 · 23/09/2020 07:40

Yes, you’re quite right — I’m just afraid to pick something that I’ll later regret. I (legitimately) have OCD, so uncertainty is my greatest enemy Confused But, oh, I love Charlotte! I watched the clip when Charlotte dies in Charlotte’s Web the other day on YouTube and my heart just swelled because of how much I love the character and the sweet name 🥰 Literary names are my favorite! I just don’t get distinct imagery from Anna, which like Mike said, is probably the reason why it’s so unassailable.

I don't think you'd regret picking Charlotte @danascully96, it's a classic name and won't date badly. There's a reason for it being popular - it's nice.

You could use any of the other names as a mn. I'd be tempted to use Sabrina as a mn as it is a bit stronger than the others. Middle names are rarely used and it might be good to have one that is not the Rose/Grace/May/Louise/Anne type.

CaffiSaliMali · 23/09/2020 09:16

I love Sabrina - fabulous name, it's unusual but not weird. If I had to pick a name from your list it would be Sabrina.

Charlotte is nice and you can't go wrong with it, it's a solid classic and timeless.

Lily is nice too but shot up in popularity in the last 10 years or so which may or may not bother you.

Anna is similar to Charlotte - a solid timeless classic. I like the simplicity of it.

Daniel and Alexander are both nice. I slightly prefer Alexander. You can't go wrong with either - both are timeless classic options.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 23/09/2020 09:22

Names like Anna, Charlotte, Daniel, Peter, Lucy, Robert, Julia, Rebecca etc are all safe choices.

They each have a long established history and are seen as sensible, practical names.

I wouldn't add Anna if you don't like it though. Go with a name you like, even if it's Aurora or Luna and not Anna or Emily.

daisypond · 23/09/2020 09:26

I like Anna very much. It’s classic in a way the others aren’t. I also like Lily, but I think it’s dated. I know a few who are in their mid-20s. I really dislike Charlotte.
Daniel is nice, but Alexander is more classic.

SapphosRock · 23/09/2020 09:27

I thought Eleanor and Kit were the Mumsnet favourites.

daisypond · 23/09/2020 09:27

Sabrina is great. I forgot to say.

itssquidstella · 23/09/2020 11:46

I don't really like either, they're boring. No name is objectively perfect and that's a good thing - the world would be very boring if everyone had exactly the same opinions!

Squeakerfoot · 23/09/2020 12:13

I think none of your name choices would do a child a disservice and choosing a name because other people like it isn't the best idea. Choose the names you love.

finallychangedmyusername · 23/09/2020 12:17

I love the simplicity of Anna, and the fact that it travels so well. Charlotte is possibly my ultimate girls name. Alexander is such a handsome name. And I used Daniel as a middle name for DS. So we have very similar tastes!

I feel that Lily has become a bit overdone in the last few years - I prefer Lucy.

Sabrina is lovely too, though a lot more unusual.

Names that feel similar to Anna and Daniel to me:

Lucy, Mary, Emily, Alice, Kate/Catherine, Zoe, Rose/Rosa, Hannah, Emma, Claire/Clara, Amy.

Thomas, James, Matthew, Adam, Luke, Joel, Leo, Max, Samuel.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 12:18

Which one goes best with your surname?
A very ordinary surname may lend itself to a more striking first name, whereas a more ordinary first name might be better with an unusual surname.

PlantPotting · 23/09/2020 12:51

Charlotte is lovely. You have clear reasons. Pick that. Perfect
I have ocd too . Sending love

ReeseWitherfork · 23/09/2020 12:52

I wanted a Daniel. Also like Dan and Danny. DH didn’t hate it but liked others more. Somehow DH got his way 🤔

HelloRose · 23/09/2020 12:57

All the Daniels I know are naughty (including my own brother who was a nightmare child and now a nightmare adult) so it has bad associations for me! I really like Anna, classic.
