Give it to me straight

So we have had a long hard road to become pregnant and I would love a name which in some way reflects how much joy we feel to have this baby. I've been looking at names which mean happiness, light, love, hope etc.

One name I've come across for a girl and I LOVE is Bliss. I once knew someone who was called Bliss and I thought it was such a cool name, she really suited it.

But I don't know if I'm brave enough! So, Mumsnet, give it to me straight. Is it lovely or awful?

People absolutely do get the piss taken out of them about their name. Whenever it's alluded to on here, you get a barrage of "Well, that's the parent's fault, teach your children better!!!".
Maybe, but what do we do about other people's children?
It's like announcing something is a Bad Thing is some sort of talisman against it happening 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeMorePacific · 18/09/2020 12:54

It’s not for me. But it’s not a shocking name, if you love it go for it. One thing you should do is consider who you’d have felt growing up with that name, then going on to applying for jobs etc xx

TeddyDahlia · 18/09/2020 12:56

I’m so sorry but I don’t really like it. Something about the blister / blistex connection maybe?

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 18/09/2020 12:56

Please don't. Poor kid.

CatteStreet · 18/09/2020 13:01

Really don't.

Felicity, Laetitia, Hilary, Cara, Lucy/Lucia, Cora, Dorothea, Zoe, Joy, Joyce, Luminita, Astrid, Amy and lots of others tick your boxes (with a wider or narrower interpretation).

Helpimfalling · 18/09/2020 13:05

Just makes me think of blister...so sorry

Enko · 18/09/2020 13:43

I like it

ANoTail · 18/09/2020 14:09

Compared to quite a lot of the names which are regularly fawned over on here, it's not too bad at all.

ladycarlotta · 18/09/2020 14:23

Never heard of the charity, but I have met someone called Bliss and she was cool.

I think it's lovely - I have a soft spot for Loveday too - but if you are hesitant about it, it would be a beautiful middle name.

5LeafPenguin · 18/09/2020 14:25

I recently heard it used as a toe curlingly coy synonym for sex.

Giraffey1 · 18/09/2020 14:26

Think you are setting her up for an awful out of teasing as she grows up. And what if she doesn’t live up to the name?

Quercus3 · 18/09/2020 16:38

I think it's lovely, however I'm not sure I'd like to be called it myself? I think I'd prefer it as a middle name. Congratulations on your pregnancy 💞

daisypond · 18/09/2020 16:54

I think it’s OK, but I dislike the sound.
Joy or Felicity are really nice alternatives.

len1234 · 18/09/2020 17:11

I dislike it for a first name but love it for a middle name.

Congratulations and I hope you find the perfect name for your little one. 😊

SilkandSteel1 · 18/09/2020 17:19

Back in the day. there was a character called Bliss in either Dynasty or the Colbys, so was a trend for a bit along with Krystle, Fallon etc

autumnkate · 18/09/2020 17:39

I like it! I think you definitely use it, maybe for a middle if you’re not sure x

itsjakeandamy · 18/09/2020 17:44

I think Bliss is too much if I'm honest. It sounds a bit like a condom brand or something.
I think Blythe would be a really good alternative.

jemimafuddleduck · 18/09/2020 17:45

Thanks all. I've listened to you and although I do love it, it's maybe not the one.

I do quite like Felicity / Fliss as some have suggested.

And thank you for your congratulations!

I know a Bliss, she is an adult and I've always thought it was a bit 'out there' if I'm honest.

changerr · 19/09/2020 21:08

Hate it, but not because it's 'out there'.

Congratulations from me too if I haven't said it before. Felicity is the best!
Tinacollada · 20/09/2020 13:44

Will get called Blister

Porridgeoat · 20/09/2020 21:45

Go for Bess and use Bliss as a nickname

Thisismytimetoshine · 20/09/2020 21:45

Bess is awful as well.

jessstan2 · 20/09/2020 21:47

Bess is a diminutive of Elizabeth.
