Avery

DH and I both love the name Avery for a boy. I realise it’s a bit marmite so not especially looking for preference on the name. My worry is that although it is traditionally a boys name, the popularity of it as a girl name in the US will take over entirely. Very happy with a unisex name but I hate to give my kid a name that in 30 years time is the new ‘Hillary’ or ‘Leslie’ where men are almost laughed at for having a ‘girls name’. Thoughts?

I thought it was a girl's name

Ellmau · 13/09/2020 09:59

I think it is genuinely unisex.

CabernetSoWhat · 13/09/2020 10:03

I thought it was a girl's name. Not keen at all. Makes me think of aviaries and bird muck.

Britannah · 13/09/2020 12:05

Sorry but I thought it was a girls name too x

Disco91 · 13/09/2020 12:15

I thought it was a girls name and it just makes me think of a bird enclosure at a zoo sorry.

Aubrey is similar if you like that just without the bird link

FlamingoorPigeon · 13/09/2020 12:36

I only know one child with this name, she's a girl. I wouldn't like to say whether I consider it a girl or boy name based on that tiny sample.
I did however when I was told said child's name wonder if it was a name and why someone would name their child after a big bird cage. When I later saw it written down though I didn't make the association, still not one of my favourite names.

MikeUniformMike · 13/09/2020 12:40

Ovary and Aviary.

FippertyGibbett · 13/09/2020 12:41

I would say it’s a female name, and a place to keep birds.

BalanceGreen · 13/09/2020 12:50

I heard it the first time as a male name - in Nashville the TV show. I quite like it, although have only heard it on girls since.

user1493494961 · 13/09/2020 12:59

I know one (girl), I would think if it being more of a girl's name.

FishPalace · 13/09/2020 13:03

To me it's a large multinational company that makes retail weighing scales. so it sounds weirdly corporate for an actual child.

Oldandcobwebby · 13/09/2020 13:08

I'm with FishPalace. It's a scales manufacturer my cousin Ken used to work for, not a given name.

FishPalace · 13/09/2020 13:10

My dad (now retired) worked for Avery, @Oldandcobwebby. Perhaps he and your cousin Ken once discussed price computing scales together. Grin

EasternDailyStress · 13/09/2020 13:14

Scales was my first thought. I think it's an awful name, girl or boy. Sorry.

MondeoFan · 13/09/2020 13:18

I like it for girls only

dollypartonscoat · 13/09/2020 13:27

As in Stephen?

beepbeepsheep · 13/09/2020 13:34

I know a boy Avery. His mum told me she's had mixed responses and some people being out and out rude but she doesn't care- and why should she? Personally I think it's gorgeous. Solid, would suit all ages, unique without being too yoonik.

SeanCailleach · 13/09/2020 13:35

Avery is a death eater in Harry Potter.

Nikori · 13/09/2020 13:38

There is a girl Avery in one of the Disney shows. I think it's cute but not everyone's cup of tea.

Mumof3almost4 · 13/09/2020 14:54

I love it Smile

MochaTime · 13/09/2020 17:12

I like it but being honest I thought it was a girl's name. Sorry!

BalloonSlayer · 13/09/2020 17:16

I like it.

I have just read a new Stephen King book called "the Institute" and one of the kids (boy) is called Avery.

Unseeliequeen · 13/09/2020 19:31

Girls name + Ava + Ovary.

IggyAce · 13/09/2020 19:35

I like it and see it as a boys name. I know one like boy with that name.

MisiSam · 13/09/2020 19:36

I think it's a nice name but I just think of Steven Avery from that Netflix making a murderer documentary.
