A bit out there...

My husband (who never has any baby names ideas EVER) has come to me with 'Quill' for a boy.

Am I crazy to actually like this for a name? All I can find about it is that it's potentially Irish and maybe short for Quillan/Quillon.

I would also worry that this baby could have a 'strange' name compared to the other two.

Thoughts?

Is he a Marvel/Guardians fan?

Scarby9 · 08/09/2020 16:26

Quinn is a perfectly acceptable name, as is Will, so I don't see why Quillan, shortened to Quill as a nickname, is not also perfectly acceptable.
I like it.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 08/09/2020 16:38

I’ve never heard of Quillan, only Quninlan (as a surname).
If you like Quill, just go for it... I don’t think you need to pick a “proper” name so that you can shorten it to the name you actually want.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 08/09/2020 16:39

Sorry typo.. was meant to say Quinlan as a surname I’ve heard of

Unseeliequeen · 08/09/2020 16:54

It's cool....I think I like it.

It's not too out there. Would your partner mind being called Quill? Does he think he would've liked having the name and answering calls/filling out job applications/being called out in the school register with that name? My sister has an unusual name and got a bit of mild bullying about it at school (pretty sure she likes having it now though).

There are names I think are really cool and unusual but wouldn't use because they probably belong more in a story book than on a real life person (not trying to imply Quill is one of those).. just some food for thought.

If you end up having a Quill don't give him the middle name (or sibling) Ted.

RemyHadley · 08/09/2020 17:09

Peter Quill is Starlord in guardians of the galaxy - he’s often just called quill in the films. The marvel films are hugely popular, are you both happy with that association?

Itsrainingnotmen · 08/09/2020 17:13

Its 2020. How about Biro /Bic?
Quinn yes.
Quill no..

Cherrylipbalm · 08/09/2020 17:13

It's something you write with. It's terrible in my opinion but you'd probably hate my choices of names

Alarae · 08/09/2020 17:18

Are you prepared for the 'are you a marvel fan?' questions?

I would personally steer towards Quinn. Obviously there is Harley Quinn, but I feel the name isn't overshadowed by it. Yet.

HeavyDeuty · 08/09/2020 17:19

Quiller is a name and Quill could be the nn?

Soubriquet · 08/09/2020 17:21

Gotta be a marvel fan

I’m sure he won’t be the only Quill in existence but honestly, I’m not sure it’s a good every day name

Even the main character was Peter Quill not just Quill

countrystumpkin · 08/09/2020 17:25

Ok this makes more sense. He's a marvel fan 🙄😂 here's me thinking he actually came up with a name himself! Thanks for letting me know !

Love it. I knew an Aquilla once.

whatausername · 08/09/2020 17:37

Only if you name the siblings ballpoint, rollerball and fountain. Or pencil, stylus and pen but tbh I'm not a huge fan of pen.

Grufallosfriends · 08/09/2020 17:43

I like it but prefer Quinn.

I have a Quentin who often goes by Quinn.

Itsrainingnotmen · 08/09/2020 17:44

My dd has just given her new arrivals Marvel names...
2 dkittens!. Grin

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 08/09/2020 17:44

I like it. I didn't even think of the pen association or Guardians of the galaxy.

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 17:49

Apparently Quill is a boys name, short for Quillan (Irish).

As others have said, Quinn is well known, as is Will so why not?

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 17:49

And Q is a cool initial!

PablosHoney · 08/09/2020 21:05

Fountain pen?

ButterflyRuns · 08/09/2020 21:06

I like Quillan.

Tillygetsit · 08/09/2020 21:33

Quillan is quite cool.

Firebird83 · 08/09/2020 22:14

I like Quillan and it could be shortened to Quill

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 22:14

There were 5 Quillans born in 2018.

I like it.

MrsApplepants · 08/09/2020 22:45

I like it
