What are your thoughts on the name Roman?

I only know of Roman Kemp, but as you can tell from my username, I approve Wink Martin uses the nn Ro for his son (gogglebox) which I love.

IHateCoronavirus · 07/09/2020 05:31

When I first hear it I lived it. Then I taught a little Roman who was “challenging” Grin and the name has connotations as a result. He was very cute though!

JingsMahBucket · 07/09/2020 05:59

Love the name and always have ever since I heard it when I was young.

Grufallosfriends · 07/09/2020 07:15

Roman? Like Greek?

I much prefer Rowan.

Crylittlesister · 07/09/2020 07:19

I know six Romans, aged from 15 down, but 3 of them were born in the last year! , so v popular around here (East London).

Firebird83 · 07/09/2020 08:45

Unfortunately it makes me think of Roman Polanski

Unseeliequeen · 07/09/2020 11:38

I like and don't like it.

On one hand it feels strong.
On the other it feels silly.
Mariah Carey has a son called Moroccan.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 07/09/2020 11:42

Sounds too much linked to Rome and the Romans.

Reuben or Rowan are nicer names imo.

Roseburn · 07/09/2020 11:46

It's a Polish name and should be pronounced Raw-man, ( stress on the first syllable but second is not quite as short as schwa, although it would pass)

Nothing to do with Rome.

Roseburn · 07/09/2020 11:47

ps - I like it, but the mispronunciation would bug me if it was my child.

Flymetothestars · 07/09/2020 12:21

It's an ok name. Roman is extremely popular now though. Was top fastest rising boy name in 2018 (see graph below to see official ONS graph of statistics). The name has completely booked faster than almost any other:

names.darkgreener.com/#roman

Problem is it's got so popular at the same time as other names such as Rowan and Reuben - all 3 names in top 100 and rising fast. As all these names are so popular now they merge into one for me and lost the shine they may have had a few years ago sadly.

Depends if popularity bothers you or not. If you're picking this name to be a bit different though, don't. There's 2 Roman's in my Nct class of 8 babies. I know numerous Roman, Rohan, Rowan, Ronan, Roan and so on.

Flymetothestars · 07/09/2020 12:21
  • name has completely boomed faster than almost any other Not Booked!
MikeUniformMike · 07/09/2020 12:40

I don't like it. Rowan is ok.
Roman makes me think of Roman Polanski but I don't like the name anyway.

Thistlegirl4 · 07/09/2020 14:20

It is a name that has grown on me and now I really like it.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 07/09/2020 14:27

Really don't like it.

To me Roman is a person or thing from Roman times. You wouldn't call a baby Saxon or Viking would you?

Yawningyawning · 07/09/2020 14:29

South east and I know of three baby Romans this year

Pippilangstrumpfi · 07/09/2020 14:38

This

Astronica · 07/09/2020 14:42

I don't like it.
And it's over-used.
And Days of our Lives.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 07/09/2020 16:44

I like it!
I taught a young Roman once; he was mischievous, but very clever. He said his mum so named him because he was born with a big nose!

Unfortunately, there is the Roman Polanski link.

Whatsyourflava · 07/09/2020 16:59

Name of the moment. Extremely popular now if that's an issue for you. Probably Roman Kemp and a famous YouTuber also called Roman propelled this name into the mainstream a few years ago. Gets a bit confusing with all the similar sounding names about now too that are also on big upswings. I'd pick something else less trendy personally.

TantricTwist · 07/09/2020 17:14

It's such a lovely name I really like it.
It's a nice strong name and not too unusual now it's becoming popular.

There are so many popular names it hardly makes the slightest difference what you choose so long as you like it.
Jack and Jake were popular and top of the list for about 10 years in a row.

Viletta · 07/09/2020 17:32

What would be the short version? Would Romy work?

OP posts:
Pippilangstrumpfi · 07/09/2020 19:58

Romy is a girls name!

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/09/2020 20:01

It's a family name for us (Polish) and therefore doesn't have the Polanski/toga references. I like it, it's strong. Anyone who lives somewhere with a Polish population won't be confused.

Rainallnight · 07/09/2020 20:01

Makes me think of Succession (the series on Prime)
