Excuse the (temporary) ignorance - is it Mee-kah or My-kah or something else? Which syllable does the stress fall on?

I always thought it was pronounced Me Sha! I've never known one though

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/09/2020 11:46

DDs friend is My-Kaa.
(

TheChristmasPrincess · 05/09/2020 11:57

I’d pronounce it My-Kah

Mika would be Me-Kah (to me at least)

DoTheMaccaroni · 05/09/2020 11:59

I’m baffled by all the people saying mee-kah..

It’s always been my-kah in my experience.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 11:59

I only know one. His parents are christians. They say it Mike-ah.
It's been Mike-ah in every church I've attended.

DoTheMaccaroni · 05/09/2020 12:00

Me-sha is normally Micha

unmarkedbythat · 05/09/2020 12:03

Mike-uh

Never heard Meek-uh for that spelling. Meek-uh is how I would say Mika.

Astronica · 05/09/2020 12:51

I've only ever come across it as a boy's name, and always MY-kuh.

Pippilangstrumpfy · 05/09/2020 13:41

Mika would be Me-Kah

Me Kah would be Me (like Mel) kah. A bit like Mecca.

sunshineandshowers40 · 05/09/2020 13:47

My-kah

sunshineandshowers40 · 05/09/2020 13:48

I know a Micah (boy).

Ninkanink · 05/09/2020 13:49

It is a Biblical name and is pronounced my-cah.

Oneandabean · 05/09/2020 14:51

I’ve only ever heard it me-ka which I love but recently heard it said my-cah by Americans and I’ve totally gone off it

abiirthdaycake · 05/09/2020 15:21

Micah is My-cah
Mika is mee-cah
Micha is mee-sha

CatkinToadflax · 05/09/2020 15:36

My-cah. As PPs have said, male and biblical.

One of the coolest girls at school was a Mee-ka, spelt Mieke.

pollywollydoodler · 05/09/2020 15:46

Me-sha as M Paris the singer

dementedpixie · 05/09/2020 15:48

She spells it as Mica rathe than Micha

pollywollydoodler · 05/09/2020 15:49

But that may be because she was a Michelle originally

EleanorOalike · 05/09/2020 15:51

Op isn’t talking about the female name Micha though (or Mica as it happens) Confused

She’s talking about the male biblical name MICAH. Which is pronounced MY-CA

BackforGood · 05/09/2020 15:53

I'd say the 'correct' (as in ancient) way of saying it is MY-kah (as said previous,y like 'Mike' with 'ah' on the end).

I have come across a pupil whose parents had put that on a birthcertificate and wanted it said "Mee-sha" though.

I suspect it is just oe of those names you'd have to be correcting people a lot.

VirginiaWolverine · 05/09/2020 15:54

I've only ever heard it pronounced MY-ca.

Cissyandflora · 05/09/2020 15:58

Mee sha
It seems I’ve been wrong though.

abiirthdaycake · 05/09/2020 16:29

Well, I've just looked it up and the Hebrew is מִיכָה‎... That's definitely a "me"! I stand corrected

LolaSmiles · 05/09/2020 16:42

abiirthdaycake
My understanding is that most biblical names once anglicised don't keep original Hebrew pronunciation.

Ninkanink · 05/09/2020 16:43

Tbf most of the people I know who use biblical names are American, so I presume that’s the US pronunciation. No clue on the U.K., nor on Hebrew.
