Excuse the (temporary) ignorance - is it Mee-kah or My-kah or something else? Which syllable does the stress fall on?

Mi ca
(Mee ca)

HeronLanyon · 05/09/2020 07:05

My- ca with stress on first syllable.
Tbh it’s a name I wobble with slightly and although this is how I end up saying it my poor head goes through alternatives and flips from one or another before I dare open my lips !

XFPW · 05/09/2020 07:21

Definitely My-cah.

As PPs have said it’s a male name with Biblical origins - Micah was a minor prophet living in Judah. The name is derived from the original Hebrew Mikiyahu/Michaiah (various spelling options due to being translated from Hebrew) which means “Who is like Yahweh/God?”

AuntieStella · 05/09/2020 07:25

my-ka, as that's how I've always heard it said by religious types, and the name is Biblical

LolaSmiles · 05/09/2020 07:33

My-cah or my-cuh (depending on accent) with the stress on the 'my'.

Persipan · 05/09/2020 07:50

I knew two Micah's (one male, one female) who were both MEE-sha.

HeronLanyon · 05/09/2020 07:54

persipan ‘-Sha’ that’s a spanner in the works !! I’d expect that to be ‘misha’ or at a push ‘micha’

joystir59 · 05/09/2020 07:57

If you want to pronounce a girl's name Misha then spell it that way

KitKatastrophe · 05/09/2020 07:58

@BingoGo

Micah = My-kah Mika = Mee-kah
Yes this is how I would pronounce both
FelicityPike · 05/09/2020 08:11

My-kah like the Biblical guy. (And the wee boy from Heroes)

PuppyPowerPowder · 05/09/2020 08:12

What @DramaAlpaca said.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/09/2020 08:15

Joining the My kuh opinion here.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/09/2020 08:16

Mike-Uh

Soubriquet · 05/09/2020 08:30

My-kah

Like Michael

Mee-ka would be Meeka to me

nutellatoast · 05/09/2020 09:03

My-kah
Whichever way is "correct" it will get pronounced both ways so you will spend your life correcting it.
My dc has a name which I thought was obvious how it is pronounced but it is often pronounced incorrectly. It's irritating.

Onestepup · 05/09/2020 09:06

MY-ka

RatInADollhouse · 05/09/2020 09:14

I know a little boy with the name Micah, pronounced mike-a. It’s a biblical name. People are always calling him meek-a but that is not correct. The family is American and apparently it’s reasonably common over there, at least enough that everyone pronounces it correctly.

babyname8993 · 05/09/2020 09:49

@BingoGo

Micah = My-kah Mika = Mee-kah
I have chosen this as my overall favourite boy name.

I agree with this post.

I'm hoping to name our baby this if we have a boy. Won't find out till birth.

NameChange84 · 05/09/2020 09:59

The correct pronunciation for the male biblical character is My-kuh

NameChange84 · 05/09/2020 10:03

Mee-sha is usually misha, meesha or very rarely mica (as is the singer Mica Paris).

I’d never look at Micah and assume it was Meesha that’s just plain weird. Like looking at Michael and pronouncing it Meeshayel Confused

RuthW · 05/09/2020 10:23

I would say My-ca. I know a female one

Persipan · 05/09/2020 10:30

@HeronLanyon

persipan ‘-Sha’ that’s a spanner in the works !! I’d expect that to be ‘misha’ or at a push ‘micha’
Knowing the two of them at the same time, I just fully assumed that was how it was pronounced by everyone!
Pippilangstrumpfy · 05/09/2020 11:33

Mee ka

Mike is only pronounced Myke as it ends in e.

zigaziga · 05/09/2020 11:40

I know one (male) and he’s definitely My-cuh

The people saying Mee-ka seem very sure though? Confused

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 11:40

Mike-uh
