Mary or Lauren

Which one do you like the most? I'm expecting number three - we have a Ben and a Hannah. Another boy will be Sam(uel) but we can't agree on a girl's name. Lauren and Mary are our current favourites but also like Catherine/Kate/Katie and Sophie.

Mary reminds me of an older woman

RoseMartha · 26/08/2020 00:00

I like them in this order
Mary
Kate
Katie
Sophie
Lauren

I wouldn’t use Mairi or Mhairi unless you are Scottish. My sister has to spell it a lot as she has Mhairi as her second name to another Scottish name. My dad was Scottish.

Very few Mary’s at School. I think I have only come across one that went to school with my children.
Only known two Lauren’s and they were both lovely. I think either go well. We have a Sophie in the family but it has become very popular.
Have you thought about Catriona?

lloe7 · 26/08/2020 00:08

My name is Lauren so that gets my vote Grin

sunrainwind · 26/08/2020 06:23

Thanks all. Though very mixed opinions! We don't mind popular or not so popular, we like traditional names that are easy to spell as our surname is unusual and always needs spelling.

I think we are now between Mary, Sophie and Lauren. I really like Catherine/Kate still but my husband prefers the others. His favourite is Sophie.

We might wait until the baby arrives but with the others we announced their names immediately and I don't really get the sense that you can decide more by looking at them so think we'd be just delaying the decision! But if it's a boy it will be ok! Boys were easier to decide!

I like Lauren or Katherine. I tend to assume anyone calling their baby Mary these days is deeply religious.

mintich · 26/08/2020 06:55

Lauren or Kate

daisypond · 26/08/2020 07:11

Mary by far.

Kote · 26/08/2020 07:18

I like Lauren and Katie, they both go well with your other DC names. Not so keen on Mary.

Onestepup · 26/08/2020 07:21

Lauren Sophie

Imalauren · 26/08/2020 09:58

I’ve name changed, but I’m a Lauren Mary! I’d definitely go for Lauren, Mary allows for some teasing and I really don’t like it. I used to get a lot of compliments on Lauren, but it was unusual when I was young so you might not get that now.

CaffiSaliMali · 26/08/2020 10:46

I would go with Mary - Ben and Hannah (and your other boys name, Samuel) are biblical so I would stick with that theme.

Mary is also an underused classic and has an attractive simplicity to it.

Of your other names I prefer Sophie to Lauren, but they're both nice.

TwizzledTurkey · 26/08/2020 11:00

Kate then Lauren
Can’t stand the name Mary personally

JanewaysBun · 26/08/2020 11:41

Lauren is a gorgeous name so that is 1.

Mary is lovely and classic though, and unusual nowadays (for Brits, still popular for Spanish peipl)

nc600 · 26/08/2020 11:44

Not Mary.

PlantPotting · 26/08/2020 11:59

If your final 3:

Love Lauren the most , then Sophie next - both amazing names

Mary is last because of "Virgin Mary" and potential for teasing at school (lots of teasing at my school about this name even if people only had it as a middle name!)

RuthW · 26/08/2020 12:15

Mary. Lauren is very dated.

VenusClapTrap · 26/08/2020 13:03

Mary gets my vote

Marlena1 · 26/08/2020 13:16

Sophie is my fav (I have one) but I probably would go with Lauren as it's less popular but lovely.

songlikeyou · 26/08/2020 13:19

Lauren or Kate would be my choice, I think either one will sound lovely with your other children’s names too.

TheRosariojewels · 26/08/2020 20:03

Mary

Lauren is my middle name and I have always considered it to be as dull as ditch water.

Rosegoldring · 26/08/2020 21:22

Love Lauren. Think it's cure but also a solid strong name for a woman, seems to suit all ages

Flappingflamingo · 26/08/2020 21:27

Mary, Lauren or Kate for me but Mary Kate sounds like one hyphenated name to me

user1493494961 · 26/08/2020 21:42

Lauren is a different type of name to your other choices, very 90s. I would choose Kate, it goes well with Ben and Hannah.

itsjakeandamy · 26/08/2020 21:51

Ben and Hannah and Sam are very classic.
Lauren feels dated but not classic at all. I don't like it.
Mary is more unusual but fits better.
I think Katherine/Kate would be my choice though.
